Star Trek endorses Rape Culture
(TW: Rape Culture, objectification, enslaving women)

Hey everybody? You know what Star Trek needs? More objectification and exploitation of women! But we'll make them *green*, and alien so that it differentiates them from Earth women. That'll throw off the feminist hordes!

What am I talking about?

Why, Official Star Trek Fratboy shirts featuring the words "ORION SLAVES GONE WILD" on a t-shirt specifically being marketed to Frat Boys for Spring Break.

I wish I was kidding. I *so* wish I was kidding. I think what hurts the most about this is this is Star Trek. Ostensibly, it's supposed to be inclusive.

Bonus: These shirts were advertised on the official Star Trek Facebook page! No warning, no words, just a trigger out of the friggin' blue, with a heapin' help of "Get back in the kitchen" jokes for any women that complained about it in the comment thread.

- I get threatened to be whipped.
- One guy threatened to show me what it was like to *not* survive a rape, but thankfully that was taken down. You see the fallout of that comment later.

Why is it when someone merely *mentions* that something might be exploitative or offensive in a firm tone that challenges the status quo, the death threats and the rage!posting occurs? It's like fucking clockwork.

I was that rape survivor, since I was the first to object. You know, I'd like to go one year without some quivering douche-canoe threatening my safety and personhood. Just one year. Twelve months, man.

I'm really sorry. That was just one of the worst things I ever read and I've worked in child protection. If it helps, I didn't know it was you, but I was one of the 'likes' on your comments. I didn't make any comments because I was so enraged I couldn't come up with anything that didn't include the word 'douche-nozzle.'

I wasn't reticent in ploughing in because it doesn't matter where I go online, I've been here for over 10 years using the same usernames, being in the same fandoms, doing the same paintings and what-not. I've been working at being well known, so my name is around anyway. I've been tracked down before through LJ so I figure, I'm saving the scary douche-bags five minutes by just posting with my real name on FB.

I won't lie - I've been triggered this morning. Mainly feelings of utter helplessness and futility. Sometimes I can't help believe that no matter what one does, no matter how brilliant one is at one's chosen profession, no matter what clever thing one says, no matter who you inspire or who you interact with, it won't matter in the end, because you're a woman. And a woman just doesn't matter in this world.

Of course I'd never believe a word of that. Ever.

I think I need to watch Lady Gaga's new clip a few times to cheer myself up.

I don't follow things on Facebook--I rarely log in--but I'm so, so sorry this happened to you.

It's funny, most of the fandom people I know are women... I don't understand why it's still treated like a "boys-only" club.

idek.

I wish I could give that year to you. To all of us. I'm so sorry.
