Googling it a bit it's a homonym of 'idiot' (which I knew), but as it turns out 'idiot' itself means someone who is mentally deficient (I assume cognitively impaired etc). Not only that, idiot has legal meaning is several states.

I have to admit, knowing this probably won't stop me from calling someone an idiot in the future.
