"That's a DUDE? EW! I Need to Bathe!"
So, over on That Guy With the Glasses MarzGurl has been reviewing the Land Before Time franchise.

Movie number 8 has a new spike tail named Tippy who looks like this.

MarzGurl is disturbed.

It starts at the 4:20-ish mark of the video. For those who don't want to click, here's a transcription.

Adult Spike Tail: Come on boys.
MarsGurl: Wait, wait, BOYS?!...That pink thing...It's a DUDE?! Ew, what the hell?! It even has this big girly eyelash thing going on that the girl LittleFoot look-alike had from a few movies back. Ugh. UGH! I think I need to bathe after this.

Luckily the comments are full of clue-bats for the most part and call her out on the offensive reaction.

My personal favourite comment is "Really MG, you watch anime; you should be very very accustomed to "dude looks like a lady" by now."

Well, he caters to his audience, eh? I watched a couple of the Nostalgia Chick videos the other day, and the funny thing about the comment sections is that on most of the vids, it's all positive and casual, and then she does a video about female tokenization and BAM, a screenful of "y u make big deal".

The thing I've been hearing lately about Nostalgia Chick is after she did the X-Men video, she got a lot of flack because she's supposed to stick to girly stuff and a lot of the fanboy followers were angry that she did a video about something they watched as well. It's not for girls!!!!!

It seems to be a bit of a running theme; I vaguely recall people being angry when she talked about Transformers. Honestly, I enjoy Nostalgia Chick more specifically because she does talk about serious issues like tokenism and presentation of female characters in fiction, but I can see how she would grind on people's nerves. I just don't understand when the grinding is over "why is she talking about Guy Things?"

I was insulted because she ignored decades of cartoons, some of them actually very good, and acted like there was nothing between G1 and the Bay movies!

WHAT ABOUT BEAST WARS AND THE UNICRON TRILOGY AND RID AND THE COMICS FROM MARVEL AND DREAMWAVE-- wait actually we can forget the DW stuff because Pat Lee is an asshole-- AND IDW? JEEEEEEZE.

That makes more sense! I just remember a lot of people being mad on principle because Chick is supposed to review girly things! How dare she.

Though Nostalgia Chick does have problems, I should add. A lot of them. They're just less universally present and less played-for-humor than Critic's.

I have very little respect for the Nostalgia Chick after the Showgirls review.

It bothered the *hell* out of me that all she got out of the rape scene was 'well, if he'd just asked, she would have slept with him'. That is NOT what rape is about.

Plus her treatment of Elisa from Gargoyles made me rage. Anyway.

LOL ARE YOU SERIOUS

I only hit up the ones whose source material I was familiar with, so I didn't see that, but.... wow. Just... wow.

What did she say about Elisa?

I can't remember everything that bugs me about the Nostalgia Chick, but I do remember two specifics: The rape joke in the Mulan review (what, the cruelty of Shan Yu returning the girl's doll just before murdering her and her whole village wasn't monstrous enough?) and her assessment of Ever After, where I got the sense that she didn't even watch the film (both stepsisters are flat, mean characters? Really?).

She badmouthed Elisa?!

I knew there was something about her (the Nostalgia Chick, I mean) I didn't like, beyond the fact that I liked Anastasia, thank you very much.

She was doing an episode about token female characters in cartoons, and she talked about Gargoyles and said not only was Elisa a token female character, she was also a token minority (I don't remember the specific wording, if it was person of colour or what).

It bothered the hell out of my because not only was she totally cool, Elisa DID STUFF. She had a job that probably wouldn't have been filled by her demographic a lot and did it WELL. Her friendship/romance with Goliath wasn't the fill of her world, but it was a part of it, just like kicking ass.

...also, Elisa's heritage comes with a cool story if you do a touch of research (which basically no one on that site ever does, because it would ruin their jokes that play on base ignorance, but anyway): Elisa was originally planned to be Hispanic, but when they got her voice actress (who was half-Nigerian and half-Native American), they changed her heritage to match, and later on talked about it (I believe they address it when they talk about Elisa's family and the episodes with Talon).

Hell, Demona and Fox were also super cool. If she'd wanted to complain about Angela, I'd have been down for that, since *she* felt like a Mary Sue character I'd have inserted into the series when I was 12-13. I don't even recall if she talked about Demona and Fox.

I liked Anastasia too.

Yeah, in the world-traveling arc you get to see both the reservation (I think? Native American community, at least, it's been a while) where Elisa's dad grew up, where Coyote is causing trouble, and Africa (I don't remember if it was specified as Nigeria, blub bluh most forgetful me) where her mom is doing some fokelore readings, which are of course related to the episode having Anansi causing trouble.

(... I'd be kind of interested to hear what minorities from the various cultures who had mythology borrowed think about *every god ever pretty much* being the child of Oberon. Hmm. I do not know if it was respectful enough to not cause offense, in context, to have ALL THE GODS ALL OF THEM canonly originate from British origins?)

Elisa is NOT a token ANYTHING. UGH.

Fox was awesome beyond awesome.

I loved that show. Best cartoon ever until ATLA came along. For me, anyway.

My long reply is above, but the short version is she complained that Elisa was a double-token: female and not-white, and it made me very ragey, as I didn't feel she was either. She had depth and was cool. If I'd had any desire to be a cop, she'd be a role model, no question.
