Screw The Quake Victims, Give Me My Anime.
Admission up front: I'm in here a couple of times as [info]sevendials. I stopped posting before I wrote this up and will not be saying any more.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica is one of the currently-airing shows in the winter anime season. It's a deconstruction of the Magical Girl concept, created by Gen Urobuchi and Studio SHAFT. Ten episodes of the projected twelve-episode run have been shown so far, and it's pretty obvious that however bad things already look for Madoka and her friends, they were only going to get worse. It's been on hiatus since the Tohoku earthquake, for what many fans feel to be obvious reasons.

madokamagica is a Livejournal community that discusses aspects of the episodes, shares icons and fanmixes. It's usually fairly low-pressure, and has been pretty quiet since the show went on hiatus. That all changes when doctorcasey makes a community post about the show's status, suggesting that the last two episodes may not be screened at all out of sensitivity to the victims of the quake. First red flag: the tone of the initial post was rather entitled, but it appears to be a direct quote from another message board so it was easy to assume he was simply spreading the word.

Things remain reasonable until people start to post in support of the decision. Whereupon it becomes obvious doctorcasey made the post because he disapproves of this kind of "political correctness" and was hoping the rest of the community would agree with him.

What. The. Hell.

ETA: doctorcasey has left the building. Really! He's going right now!

ETA 2: doctorcasey has been in contact with me via Livejournal messaging, and has requested that I post the following apology here on his behalf. Everything below the cut is him:

Oh, uh, wow. I haven't read all the comments; I doubt I'm exactly wanted here, but...

I was wrong to say the things that I said, and I'm sorry. I didn't understand the kind of impact the episode might have on the Japanese people, I was operating under the (stupid) assumption that it would do nothing to change the feelings of those already hurting from what happened and that MBS was doing this for no other reason than to avoid bad publicity from people that were annoyed, but not exactly hurt (Though just to clarify, I don't think many of the things people accused me of thinking in that thread, such as 'The Japanese people should handle their own suffering better' or whatever; I don't believe that at all, it was a terrible disaster and it's okay to feel whatever they feel for however long they feel it. Honestly, there's so many misunderstandings and people thinking me guilty of things I never said that I'm not sure where to start). Now I understand the feelings that the episode might have drawn, though, and if such an episode could serve as a trigger for those with PTSD then I have to agree there is nothing wrong at all with the decision to delay the episodes until the September DVD release.

I know that by making so many posts about the subject, I gave the impression that I care about the episodes more than what's going on in Japan. That's not the truth, though - I intended to just make that original post of mine (The original anti-censorship post, I mean, not the opening announcement) and be done, but a lot of people replied to me and I replied to them in turn, and ended up belaboring the point in the process. The delay was never something I felt too strongly about in the first place; I might have given that impression in my opinionated rants because I'm an opinionated, obnoxious person, but it really never was. What's happening in Japan is something I've given a lot of thought to every day since March 11th, it's something I've kept up with actively. I'm always happy whenever I hear any kind of good news and dejected when I stumble upon the alternative. I'm far from indifferent. (Of course, I don't think that everyone's treating me entirely fairly here... I might have been annoyed about the Madoka delay at first, but it's not as though annoyance over episode delays and concern towards Japan are mutually exclusive. It's possible to have mild annoyance towards the mild problems concerning Madoka delays, and something deeper for the more important problems facing Japan - or at least, it is whenever you misunderstand the nature of said delay the way I did - and that's where I stood at the start).

As for the 9/11 thing I said, I'm understanding of self-censorship and withheld episodes from whenever the incident was still fresh, but I think the movie laronmi was talking about was released years and years later. If I'm wrong on that, then never mind what I said. And for the 'sure why not' I gave in response to that one guy later in the thread, I was burned out and shitposting because I was stressed out from people acting like I'm Ishihara or something saying the tsunami was divine punishment.

tl;dr version: The delay is okay and understandable, I'm an idiot, everyone else was right. I'm sorry.

Oh my fucking god. There are people from the quake/tsunami zone suffering from PTSD, there are people whose family members are working in the reactors and exposing themselves to radiation to keep everyone safe while everyone else worries about them (or shuns them), shit is still just fucked up on the coast, and some sprat in the U.S. is whining because they doesn't get to watch more animated magical girls get splattered? HEY GUYS, DID YOU KNOW CARTOONS ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN PEOPLE'S FEELINGS, AND IF YOU CARE ABOUT PEOPLE'S FEELINGS MORE YOU'RE JUST PART OF THE THOUGHT POLICE THAT CENSORS MAGICAL GIRLS? HOLY SHIT I HAD NO IDEA.

Shit like this makes me embarrassed to admit I'm an anime fan sometimes.

Oh ffs. I'm also pretty disappointed since I wanted to wait until the whole series is finished before marathoning it, but seriously? It's anime. It's just a show. Uuuuuuuuuugh.

Yes, I'm sure some bratty privileged kid's need to watch sparkly mahou shojo getting killed supersedes the condition of, idk, a third of the country that came up with the anime in the first place. And it's not like they're never showing those episodes ever, it might just be delayed for a few weeks, and even if it doesn't come out on tv, it would still come out in the dvd, so wtf is all this whining about.

I think this is wrong. People shouldn't be afraid to express themselves or self-censor. Political correctness is glorified peer pressure on a wide scale. If companies and invidual filmmakers genuinely care about the people they might hurt and self-censor for that reason, then good for them, but if they don't feel like doing that... well, too bad for whoever's offended.

And this was after someone brought up how people were mad about a recent depiction of 9/11

Mother of god what a complete dickhole.

Pfft, we all know the real reason the last two episodes haven't been released: Shinbo and co. got a little too high while planning the storyboards for the freakish witch scenes and accidentally lost/destroyed the rest of work they'd done for it...on top of already being a week+ behind. In the process of remaking everything, they probably decided to redo the entire series, because they realized how much quality animation had slipped through. So we can expect it in about a year. Maybe.

(Though, honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if they don't redo a lot of the series, and not just the last three or four episodes. And not just because of the derpy "being meguca is suffering" nonsense. That will add a LOT more delay, if I understand anything about how SHAFT works.)

Sure, Doctor Casey, sure. Why don't you start by telling your friends exactly what you think of their new haircuts? Tell your SO that his/her cooking sucks. Tell random parents you meet while out and about that their children are ugly. Oh, and next time you don't feel like going into work, just tell your boss that instead of lying and saying that you have a cold.

How funny: some days ago a friend of mine had to write a smackdown on his blog (somewhat regional Spanish only) towards the fans whining and moaning because "Waa, waa my favorite anime/game/very Japanese form of entertainment was delayed whyyyy", via sporking a quite special article who could be resumed to "Well, Japan was Hurt Badly and won't deliver our beloved entertainment and that is a Bad Thing, and now they will know how we the Third World works, or something. Anyway, they now have to rebuild, so we hope they'll include our growing market on their future plans wink wink nudge nudge durr durr".
Mind, I could be somewhat understanding on this kind of attitudes because anime and manga and videogames and strange collectible and customizable toys are the only link some people have with Japan, so I wasn't that surprised that there are so many self centered people whining. But at least I hoped that this people would have at least the tiniest speck of human decency to understand that some things couldn't be broadcast that soon.
Unfortunately I was wrong. But then again, I live in the only country when a person burning a USA flag the very 9/12 can (and did) ascend to the highest ranks of the government under the terrified view of the decent people, so isn't that I was surprised, or something.

The axiom of political correctness is basically 'If something offends someone somewhere, then no one anywhere should see it.' It's bullshit through and through, I don't think there's anything 'wise' or 'caring' or 'necessary' about this decision.

Actually, no. The whole point of political correctness is that if you complain about it, you prove yourself a douche. The only people who ever being up being PC are those who feel like their rights to be offensive are being questioned, and as such, it's an excellent assholometer.

I know I'm late to the party and all but this guy's whole attitude just bothers me. I'm living in a city suffering through a similar disaster (though on a much smaller scale) and even at a smaller level and after a (slightly) longer time my adrenalin fight/flight reaction is triggered when a truck drives past the house and I can be literally stressed and wound up for ages. I can't even begin to imagine the trauma the Japanese people must be suffering and for him to be so dismissive just really infuriates me. The apology doesn't do much to dispel the bad feelings I have about him, either - it's so 'but you just don't understaaaaand me, I'm a good guy really' which doesn't do much to help.

I think what makes me angriest about this wank is that it basically sums up everything that makes me disgusted with anime fandom as a whole. This is the logical extension of all the bullshit I've seen in the 15 or so years I've watched the fandom explode in popularity. The disaster has uncovered all the gross, borderline (and sometimes blatantly) racist underpinnings of fandom for all the world to see.

These douchebags don't "love" Japan or have any respect for its people or culture, despite all their bloviating to the contrary. They're just fetishists, in the negative and worst sense of the word. "Japan" is nothing but a magical, exotic thing that exists solely for their own selfish gratification and amusement. These are the same tone deaf assholes you see wearing Naruto headbands and Inuyasha ears and shit at any kind of Japanese or Asian cultural festival in the States, barking their "supa kawaii" broken ass Google-level Japanese at anyone who looks vaguely Asian (whether they're Japanese or not). The people who buy those gross ass "I want a Japanese boyfriend/girlfriend" t-shirts at cons. They've basically taken over our local sakura matsuri at the Botanical Garden here. It's nothing but Yellow Fever as applied to an entire nation/culture/society. There's a tiny part of me that isn't completely cynical was hoping that for once, the fact that such a horrible tragedy affected a place we have a lot of fondness for would inspire people to want to be better than that. Unfortunately, this guy reminds me that fans like that seem to be a shrinking minority now.

It makes completely fucking ashamed to be a fan of Japanese entertainment, quite frankly. Call me an elitist bitch but "otaku" culture in the West makes me fucking sick and shit like this is why I want no part of it. smdh.
