    Astorical Wank.
This is something that I've been thinking of writing up for a while. The reasons I haven't were because there's a certain amount of racism, classism, xenophobia, and a surprisingly large death toll for a feud between Shakespearian actors. But now it seems that there's a place for this sort of thing.

Also, it seems that I've been out of school for long enough that my inclination towards writing research papers is no longer directed into appropriate channels. So, if you don't like TL, I would recommend that you DR.

If, on the other hand, you don't mind rather a lot of TL, by all means, please R )

    File this one under facepalm.

In the 60 Minutes interview, Eminem publicly wonders if he was/is criticized for his hateful, offensive language because he's white. He also isn't homophobic.

Relevant aside: he wrote a song called "White America" about how he knows he owes his popularity to being white.

Naturally, it doesn't take long for fans to show up at the Huffington Post article explaining that he's totally not homophobic, and he is targeted because he's white.

Starblade of "Fuck you, I'm a dragon!" fame stabbed to death.
Some of you may recall the furry Starblade (real name Mathew Finnigan) from this wank in which he was lamenting that nobody wanted to eat him. Starblade was known for various eccentric exploits in the fandom, and recently was apparently afraid that someone was going to kill him. This was mostly dismissed as Starblade being delusional, as was common.

In a chilling turn of events, it has been confirmed through obituaries and Facebook that last week he was stabbed to death by his friend, James Torrey Hill.

To make this post even unfunnier, shortly after the news broke Arcturus posted the following journal to FurAffinity:

"and I can't help but be every so slightly amused.

Starblade, aka Matthew Finnegan, was murdered by a friend, according to news.

Being as someone who gave me a lot of shit, I can't help being a little happy. Even if they're dead, I can't say that I'm sad.

    *gets more dewatches ooo*

The responses vary from 'Not cool, dude' to pats on the back for being the only person with 'balls'. He has been suspended for making the journal, but the moderators decided not to remove it as they felt the amount of his watchers giving him the third degree for his statement was a good thing.

Arcturus is no stranger to wank. Previously he was the owner of website that collected furry art and recieved flak for not removing pieces at the request of the original artists. He became known for his nasty attitude towards artists, as well as his epic tantrums when the site was shut down by its host for having 'cub porn'.

So, on Wednesday -- five days after Tyler Clementi's suicide after he was outed by a college roommate -- rapper 50 Cent posted the following on his Twitter feed:

“If you a man and your over 25 and you don’t eat pu**y just kill your self damn it. The world will be a better place. Lol.”

He doesn't seem to quite get why this may have been an objectionable comment.

    One word: Hetalia.
A warning beforehand: This wank is a desert landscape of triggers.

    Oh, my god.

    Oh, my god.

    Oh, my fucking god.

Translation: User palereverie posts in hetalia_wank, victim-blaming, trolling, and generally spewing massive, triggery bile all over the place. Massive wank occurs. Palereverie is banned for their conduct by mod kiokushitakaa ... for two weeks, because there's a three strikes rule, and everyone deserves a second chance! Response is so negative kiokushitakaa steps down as mod, but not before issuing a Heidipology to end Heidipologies.

ETA: "All the times I insulted you? Don't take it personally. I don't even know who most of you are. Even if you logged in, I still don't know who you are. It's not a personal attack. I was just being cynical and/or my own perception of humorous. I do not notice when things shift in atmosphere at all, and hadn't realized that the conversation had turned serious. I thought it was still just trolling around, so I continued."

    palereveries is permabanned.

    Pantsu volunteers to mod.

Because comparing Zoe Saldana to a Monkey is totally not racist
Generally speaking, by some miracle, Star Trek fandom has managed to be relatively wank-free (you know. For a large fandom. Either that, or I'm hanging out in the wrong places online, which is totally a possibility).

Of late, however, there have been underground rumblings, of someone who wants to spend their time bashing Nu-Uhura, presumably for breaking up the Epic Wuv between Kirk and Spock. But I'm not sharing this with y'all because someone is wanking about their OTP being harshed. No, this goes much further, and deeper, than that.

The rabbit hole apparently starts here. Unfortunately, no one capped the deleted comments, so we'll never see the fic in question.

You see, the person who wrote the deleted fic (one lotus_fly) at one point had up an image that...well, I'll just let you see for yourself. (WARNING: This is the beginning of the unfunny. Also, if you browse that journal you'll see a whole lot of misogyny in addition to the racism.)

But of course, The people calling lotus_fly on her racism are just like racists! Or maybe they're meeeeeeeean, because they MADE her delete her posts. But a thoughtful mouse provides a screencap so we can all see what she said, anyway.

And so, lotus_fly sets off and starts her own community with rules allowing character bashing, but no bashing of those who do the bashing of the characters, thereby "proving" that she never had racist intent.

    Wait.

    What?

(Entry edited because I apparently have pronoun issues)

    Edited to Add:
Apparently, lotus_fly posted some of her fic to the LiveJournal Where_No_Woman community. This went about as well for her as you might think and resulted in her bannination.

And, there has been journal bahleetion.

A Turkish woman takes umbrage at the misrepresentation of Turkey in Christopher Pike's novel The Secret of Ka. She posts a review on Amazon (and another one on LJ at bookfails) talking about her complaints with the book.

Then, a man claiming to be one of Christopher Pike's editors shows up to westsplain her own culture to her. Also he decides that she's been threatening to cut off the author's hands.

    Arguments include:

    1) It's okay for a major character to have an Indian name! He started off being Ahmed but readers liked this other name better. Also, Amesh sounds a lot like Ahmed. Same difference! Although it turns out Ahmed isn't even a Turkish name and Turkish people will spell it Ahmet.
    2) Turkish, Kurdish, Arab ... it's all a matter of perspective! Who's to say whether a Turkish person is Arab or not? (Not you because I know more about your own ethnic background than you do.)
    3) But all those people he wrote about who dress strangely and have foreign names and address their grandfathers by unusual titles are supposed to be weird! We didn't misrepresent Turkish culture at all! It's just that all of those characters are supposed to be iconoclasts or hipsters or something. Yeah.
    4) I totally saw a guy wearing a turban in Turkey once! Also, taxi drivers in London and New York wear turbans. (???)
    5) All cultures even tangentially related to Islam and the Middle East are segregated, war-torn, and insanely conservative. It's illegal to swear and nobody sits near women and bloody wars are waged outside of the Hilton every night. :(
    6) I'm just never going to address the fact that you're offended and feel that your culture was used like a dirty rag at all!
    7) u mad :(

Ah, I remember well the Turkish capital, Istanbul, that desert city.

I nicked this from a mouse at wank_report (thank you mousey!)

ETA: A clever person on Amazon dug up proof that the "editor" Michael Brite is actually a sockpuppet of Christopher Pike himself. He seems to mostly use the account to leave worshipful reviews of his own books. Seriously:

Perhaps The Best Book I Have Ever Read
Christopher Pike's "Thirst" is a masterpiece. The book is not only a fantastic thriller, a mind boggling mystery, but a spiritual revelation. Alisa is a five thousand year old vampire who kills as casually as she makes love. Yet there remains deep within her a painful and yet abiding memory and love for a man she met when she was young, a man who may have been more than a man -- the mysterious Lord Krishna from the Bhagavad Gita, the equivalent of the Indian Bible. However, please do not get the idea this book is about religion. Pike's novel is totally free of dogma. He never says Krishna is God, and his heroine is never sure who Krishna truly is. Also, he is careful not to offend anyone's faith. But there is a heart breaking passage where two of the main characters debate the existence of God. They soon come to the conclusion that "God" is impossible to define or know, but whatever Krishna was, he was too powerful, and too beautiful, to disobey. And that leads to the crux of the story. The master vampire who has created Alisa must destroy all the vampires to gain salvation. Yet, ironically, Krishna has promised Alisa she will have his protection if she obeys him and never creates another vampire. It is the clash of these two contradictory vows that stands at the heart of this brilliant novel. Reading it, I felt I was given an insight into the mystery of life itself. Why, for every good impulse in the world, is there an opposing evil? Yet Pike tells this incredible morality play without preaching. In fact, I suspect most people who read the book will simply enjoy it because it is a kick-ass novel about the most intense character in all of modern fiction. I am trying to say "Thirst" is so much more than a vampire book. It is ultimately a timeless fable of how fear can change to hatred, and then to love, and finally mature into devotion. Pike has managed a small miracle by showing us that these emotion are not truly at odds with each other. For they all reside in every human heart, in the same way, perhaps, the divine does as well. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It changed my life forever.

ETA again: Christopher Pike has now made an impressively paranoid post on a website of his accusing the original Amazon reviewer (caligirl_08) of posting negative reviews under multiple aliases, as well as claiming that [info]bookfails is a "livejournal community sponsored by someone of Turkish background who has taken things much too far and is trying to rob fiction authors of their artistic license".

Dear Author has also caught wind of this (last item on the page).

    But wait, there's more!

caligirl_08 ([info]bs_08 on [info]bookfails) tackles Pike's aforementioned sexy vampire novel, Thirst. It ... well, I'm just going to leave this here:

    Michael Brite says:
It says clearly in the book that Sita was an Aryan, a well known group who invaded India five thousand years ago. They were all blond and blue-eyed.

Two! Two bangin' boobies Ah ah ah!
There's an interesting article in ToughPigs about Katy Perry's planned appearance on Sesame Street which ended up being cut from the actual airing of the show. Meanwhile, a skit called True Mud, a parody of True Blood shows up online and seems to imply that it's ok to judge people (or something.)

Text of the ToughPigs article under cut.

It's a sad day for Sesame Workshop... )
