Professor suspended over daughter's Game of Thrones T-shirt

Popehat: Fear Cuts Deeper Than Swords: Bergen Community College Freaks Out Over "Game of Thrones" T-Shirt.

Francis Schmidt
is a popular professor of design and animation at Bergen. Schmidt posted to Google+ a cute picture of his young daughter wearing a Game of Thrones t-shirt in a yoga pose next to a cat. The t-shirt was this one, bearing the phrase "I will take what is mine with fire and blood," a quote from Daenerys Targaryen, a fictional character in a series of fantasy novels (which has sold tens of millions of copies) turned into a hot TV series on HBO (with close to 15 million viewers per episode.) Googling the phrase will instantly provide a context to anyone unfamiliar with the series.

So: a professor posts a cute picture of his kid in a t-shirt with a saying from a much-talked-about tv show. In the America we'd like to believe in, nothing happens. But in the America we've allowed to creep up on us, this happens:

FBI declares ICP and Juggalos a gang; ICP sues

[info]darksumomo
I present to you some unfunny about a fandom that does unfunny things in a funny way--Juggalos. It seems that the fans of Insane Clown Posse have become decidedly unfunny to law enforcement and the FBI has made some Foolish Ballistic Insinuations as a consequence.

FBI declares Juggalos to be a gang. The U.S. Marshals take this seriously. So does ICP, who is now suing the FBI and offering legal assistance to its fans. )

Inception unfunny racewank

[info]es_
Shamelessly copied from [info]wank_report. You can see the mice discuss it here.

[info]halflinen writes a pretty long Inception fanfic.

[info]the_moonmoth finds an exchange in the fic racist and problematic.

[info]godofwine disagrees.

[info]bookshop decides to school [info]godofwine on racism, telling [info]godofwine that "you may have the privilege of not being harmed or offended by images of racism in fandom that someone else of minority status *does not have*" and further explains that she's coming from "that cultural context of having experienced/witnessed Racefail."

[info]godofwine is an Asian living in the US.

fail_fandom anon has a lot of fun.

So does rivier: If a POC doesn't find it racist, it's internalized racism! POC anon lays the smackdown on her: "It's really amusing to watch white folks tell us non-white folks what we can and cannot think, what is an is not acceptable, what is and is not racist."
