This name sounds familiar. What does Kristallnacht mean?
There is a Harry Potter RPG called Kristallnacht at InsaneJournal.

A sample from the FAQ:

Is this really the best choice of names for your game?

We realize some people might look at the name and think, "Do they realize they just named their game after a horrific event in World War II?" And yes, we do, and were well aware of it when we named the game. We were drawing parallels between Grindelwald's actions and those in World War II. As you may notice, a few of the important events in our history even occur on the same dates as the historical events, and this was not by accident. Don't worry, we did our research, and we didn't just think, "Man, that sounds like a cool name, and I do like broken glass!" If you find it offensive at all, then we're really sorry. Like, really really. That wasn't our intent and we're really actually good people, I swear.

The comment section of the FAQ is growing with responses, and separate posts are being made.

A thread at asylum_promo where kdorian offers to pay for a rename token. Mods decline.

...How did they get past the big loud blinky "THIS IS NOT A GOOD IDEA. THIS IS VERY MUCH NOT A GOOD IDEA. IN FACT, IT IS A VERY VERY BAD IDEA" warning lights and sirens without being blinded and deafened? Or maybe that *was* why they went through with the name?

Also, re: the tags - I am having dinner with Godwin tonight, and I cannot stop giggling because of this.

Yep. It was Krystallnacht up until just after 9pm EST tonight.

Yes, which is such a cool (and, you know, somewhat relevant) name it's a shame they didn't start with it in the first place. I'm guessing they kept nacht in the name so they wouldn't have to rename all of the related subcomms. Good on them for getting the images changed as well, but somebody needs to reread the FAQ and replace all of the other references to the original comm name. I can't help but wonder if the work involved in changing not just the comm name but other every related thing was one of the reasons they dug in their heels. Gah, at least they finally came to their senses.

This just blows my mind! I cannot believe the stupid here(the RPG). How could they think that NO one would object to the name Kristallnacht? I'm not Jewish and I think it tasteless bordering on a huge WTF here. Definitely offensive as hell and the attitude up to when they decided to 'graciously' change the RPG name was definitely nasty.

I do wonder how some of these fools sleep at night.

The really sad thing - most likely they do not have a problem. In order for something to keep you up all night - you have to care about other people (and not just how people are going to see you)

Two thoughts.

1. FAIL.

2. Obviously asshats of this description aren't likely to understand basic religious tenets in general, and really this becomes almost a minor point in amongst all the rest of the aforementioned FAIL. But:

we're really actually good people, I swear

Aside from the obvious "oh, well, if you say so," thing, my inner Presbyterian just threw up. My outward neopagan doesn't like it much either, frankly.

Is there any faith in which this kind of statement - as opposed to, say, "I try to be a good person" - is credible? (Discuss!)

we're really actually good people, I swear except for this shitty uncomfortable thing that we did and the snotty condescending way we responded to everybody who had a problem with it

There, fixed it for them.

I wish I could say that I was surprised by this, but the fact that the nature of fandom is to go for the lowest common intelligence denominator proves otherwise. And for that I want to cry on the inside.

It's like a reverse Godwins, but so so so much worse. And yeah, I get double cred for calling this bullshit on account of my grandfather got picked up during Kristallnacht.

NOT. COOL.

I've noticed this, lately-- this almost sociopathic tendency to treat history, real history, as just another page in a book. I do understand that as time passes and survivors die, things become unreal, but lately I seem to be falling over this a lot. No, it's not a plot point. It's real. People died.

...this whole thing makes me nostalgic for the Goku-saves-Anne-Frank story. Gah.

I've noticed that too and hadn't been able to put my finger on what it was like, but now I've read this - you've nailed it. The human aspect of history - the fact that history happened to PEOPLE and the fact that the past has enormous repercussions (the present would not be as it is without the past, for good or bad) - seems to have escaped the notice of these dim bulbs.

Lack of empathy, me-me-me-mine, looking out for number one ONLY and treating anyone who doesn't enable your stupidity like an untouchable - it's omnipresent now and really makes me want to choke someone. Seriously, I have to disclaim on my LJ because so many of these ruff-n-tuff self-absorbed myopic whinepot spambuckets with paper-thin skin hidden behind their facade of /b/tardedness want me to POLICE MY ENTRIES' SUBJECTS SO I DO NOT HURT THEIR FEE-FEES. Meantime they want to be free t say what they want when they want about who they want, without consequence.

News flash, bimbo-trolls: you are your words in these digs. If you call everything a fag, you have no one to blame but yourself when people peg you as a homophobic moron.

As a historian, that line of thought drives me crazy.

These are real people who were involved in history, not just words on a page. It's like some people don't understand that the present is not the only thing that happened on the earth. After all, history's not important! It's not important that we understand why people do the things they do so we don't do them again.

No, it's important to act like a total idiot when people try to point out you're wrong.
