I thought this was funny, then I thought it's really not...
Some poor schmuck punched in the face over Yu-Gi-Oh trading cards:

"A 21-year-old Somerville man reported he was inside Pandemonium Books & Games at 4 Pleasant St. with his wife playing a game at about 7:19 p.m. May 19 when a man approached him, accused him of having his property and told him he had 10 minutes to hand it over, according to reports.

The victim told Cambridge Police he tried to reason with him, but the suspect and another man took the victim’s Yo-Gi-Oh cards and tried to leave with them. Yo-Gi-Oh is a Japanese competitive card game featuring anime characters.

The victim grabbed the cards, and the suspect allegedly punched him in the face twice. The two suspects left the store after employees broke up the fight. Police said the victim refused medical treatment."

I could swear that more-or-less happened in the manga.

Maybe it was an RPG?

Well, I know in the pre-American series stuff, Kaiba basically tries to steal Yugi's Blue Eyes in a really obvious and cheap fashion, and Yugi gets it back. Then Kaiba and his goons go to his grandfather's shop, beat him up, ransack the place, find the card and *rip it up in front of him*, because only four exist, and Kaiba has three, and you can only legally have three copies of the same card in one deck.

Kaiba is, in fact, a total dick.

I believe Kaiba stole grandpa's card after he couldn't buy it from him once. The manga was violent and Yugi was extremely batshit crazy back then so it probably did happen somewhere.

OK, I must have missed that, 'cause all I can remember is Yugi's creepy, creepy, creepy grandfather, with those horrible soulless eyes that haunt me to this day.

Back when I was there, it was across from the Newbury Comics outlet and next to an anime place (Tokyo Pop maybe?).

It's near Central Square now. Their basement space is much bigger than the space they've got on the main floor, but very basement-y. I was there once, when Naomi Novik was promoting her latest Temeraire novel.

Wait, that's MY game store. I get all my Cheapass games from them, when I see them at Arisia in January. I used to shop at them more when they were in the Garage in Cambridge.

Huh. I'll have to check the Facebook group when I get home from work.

I thought it was traditionally the steam tunnels under the school campus.

Depends on what you are LARPing: The vampire LARPers tend to prefer more enclosed urban settings, and they dress up in evening attire and wander around with their arms crossed to be invisible. Or so I've been told...

I only know people who did the fake swords in the woods and like little packets of baking soda that explode when you throw them at someone. Oh and the people who did the Watership Down LARP. But that was at MIT.

My friend was bitching to me the other day about how the Zombies were interfering with him getting in and out of buildings on campus. Because they were having some Zombie day -- with all the rules set up over how you could infect the masses and...

Yeah. He just wanted to get to his class. Apparently some of the involved were unclear on the concept of "not playing the game".

Highly unlikely. There's not enough space to have even a non-fighting LARP at Pandemonium unless the game monopolizes the gaming room for the day.

Connecticut is boring and largely suburban or rather rural. It's very pretty in parts, but not my favorite place. YMMV. I've been to Columbus. I had a migraine.

[info]deliciouschaos
2009-05-28 03:10 am UTC (link)
Where you are in Connecticut depends on how it is. The northeast bits are pretty rural and not doing so well financially, and are mostly farms and people commuting to larger cities these days. As you get to the center and the southwest, it gets a lot more urban, but the cities are still relatively small and commuter-centric. It really depends on what you're looking for in a place to live.
