this here, so unfunny, and rage inducing

This here, really makes me, very, very, very angry.

Photographs of alleged prisoner abuse which Barack Obama is attempting to censor include images of apparent rape and sexual abuse, it has emerged.

At least one picture shows an American soldier apparently raping a female prisoner while another is said to show a male translator raping a male detainee.

Further photographs are said to depict sexual assaults on prisoners with objects including a truncheon, wire and a phosphorescent tube

Source (with the entire article)

(insert personal rant) I don't understand this, I just...my brain cannot comprehend, how, in this day and age, a modern democracy with modern social values would allow this to happen in their armed forces.  It just blow my mind.

This is not how a modern military should work, they are there to protect and defend their country, not to go around and do ...these things.

I don't even want to THINK about this one.

What an awful world this is. How terrible.

Ohgodohgod. The third to last paragraph makes me want to hurl. Also to do some vigilante justice.

This is why I'm a misanthrope. THIS is why I hate people.

Okay, something I don't understand. Why did they take pictures of all of this? I really, really don't get that.

They're working in an environment where it was so accepted that they believed no one would care and that their superiors wouldn't find anything wrong with it.

Yeah, I don't get that either. But like the comment above, maybe they just thought everyone would be fine with it. I can't help wondering how much more was going on that we don't even know about, if this is just the stuff we have pictures of. It's vile.

This doesn't just happen in this situation, bright sparks have been taking all types of pictures in these day and age - of their crimes. Just think of the teenage boys who posted their torment of a cat on youtube.

One good thing about it, it makes it harder to hide these crimes.

Mr Obama said the individuals involved had been “identified, and appropriate actions” taken.

Were they drawn and quartered? Because I really don't feel like settling for anything less.

I'm super cynical about this, so Obama has said that appropriate action has been taken, so like, great! Yay? Where is the transparency of that action, for the sake of natural justice and accountability shouldn't we know what 'appropriate action' was taken.

I know this didn't happen under Obama's watch, but he said he would not keep secrets, a few times in his speeches - I'm not happy with a 'Oh don't worry, we've fixed it and the people responsible have been dealt with'.

As long as they don't make the pictures public. I'd really hate for that to happen because it might hurt the victims even more.

Stuff like this is why I'm really starting to dislike Obama. He made some awesome choices for his Supreme Court nominee and , but he's sounding more and more like Bush in his speeches and lying about the same things Bush did. I mean, photos of people being raped and assaulted "are not particularly sensational, especially when compared to the painful images that we remember from Abu Ghraib”? The fuck they aren't, Mr. President. I only voted for him as the lesser evil, and what made him the lesser evil is that he seemed to be above this sort of shit.

Oh, god - phosphorescent tube? One of those chemical light things that, if you trigger it, it kind of lights up/explodes?

DO NOT WANT. *shudders*

If Obama really wants to stop this, he should publish those pictures, dammit, and join up to the various international courts, and have these people sent for trial, not have it handled in a backroom deal somewhere.

The rule of law must apply equally to all, and justice must be seen to be done. Otherwise, we'll just end up with this sort of abuse happening over and over again.

I don't think they should be published.

If that was me being tortured, I wouldn't want pictures of it splashed all over the papers and the internet, even if you couldn't see my face.

However, I do think whatever happened to the soldiers involved should be more public. It could be used as a deterrent to other soldiers in the future.

Don't publish the pics. Not in the media. Use them for evidence in court where the victims aren't subjected to the media bias. But I think there should be a real trial, as stated, internationally because someone else needs to try these people. It'd be like me trying to reprimand my mom. There's too much of a power imbalance when you're that close to the situation.

Call me overly cynical, but every time "We're civilized! We're democratic! We're not like [x]! This shouldn't happen!" gets brought up in regards to this, my brain automatically responds with three phrases: "Stanford Experiment", "Milgram Experiment", "Asch Conformity". In short, no matter how "advanced" a society is supposed to be, when put in a situation in which
A) a person's superiors are implicitly or explicitly encouraging horrible things
B) a person is told that nothing will happen to them if they do horrible things as catharsis or part of their job
C) everyone else around them is doing horrible things, and
D) the humanity and individualism of the people the horrible things are being done to has already been removed,
there is higher potential (not an automatic response, but a higher potential) that a person will do horrible things as well. It doesn't excuse their actions, and it doesn't make their actions any less horrible. But no culture is completely exempt from the possibility of this happening, as much as we say "Oh, no one here could ever do that!"

ETA: And this isn't even including the psychological stress already brought on by warfare, and the possibility that the desire to hurt "them" has already been implanted by such.

My reaction is more about the fact that mass murder and widespread torture has been a constant during this century (and in ways nobody ever thought before, even) and the whole 'CIVILIZATION HELL YEAH! PROGRESS!!!' mindset has a lot to do with it.
