Eugenics for $500, Alex
Over in livejournal news lininkasi[info] reacts to the v-gifts LJ made to support bipolar disorder awareness and fundraising with his own brilliant solution:

a) reopen the mental hospitals
b) sterilize these people before they reproduce

In reaction to his comment people go crazy. Let's sterilize them all.
Also won't someone please think of the children?

I am sorry for people who suffer from these conditions, but they don't give a damn about inflicting it on a child

I tried to think of a mildly witty response to this and I just can't.

Permission to rip this twatwaffle's liver out and feed it to him.

I'm not bipolar, but I have a mood disorder that's most likely genetic and ... well, parts of my life have been crap but I'd rather have that than, you know, not having been born at all. e

This is one of those topics that upsets me so much I wrote myself a canned rant, and now I can just go back, reread it, say, "Yeah, that." and move on with my day.

Anyway, while we're at it, I say we sterilize everyone who carries one or more X chromosone. Surely the horrifying mortality rate for it has not eluded modern science! And do you know what their quality of life can be like?

What?

It's not even life bipolar disorder dramatically reduces quality of life.*

*Note for the sensitive: I'm not saying it doesn't impact quality of life, because that would be a stupid thing to say, but IIRC it's not like you're, iunno, a paranoid schizophrenic MS patient or something. No offense to paranoid schizophrenic MS patients. Aw hell, y'all can guess what I mean, right? Right?

Since I have nothing better to do than quote twatwaffles, I must say I love his defense when someone says that they hope LJ will deal with his comments as hate speech:

So, does that mean if any speech offends anyone it should be banned? In that way, no one would say something about anything.
Reminds me of something someone said about 250 years ago..
"I disagree vehemently with what you said and I will defend to the death your right to say it."
There is a difference between making a direct threat and an extreme opinion.
Some folk even think statistics are hate speech because it upsets some apple cart.

No, Einstein, it's hate speech because you promote violence against a certain group of people. Who put stupid in the water supply again?

The way he says "genetics" makes me think he's confusing it with "evolution", and that makes me a sad Darwin's finch. ):

As a bipolar patient with a family history of depression, I am undecided on having biological children. I've been suicidally depressed, and I don't want my children to have to go through that, so I would definitely never have children with anyone who had a history of mood disorders -- but I think there are some benefits to bipolar disorder that sort of make up for the crappy parts. And even though I've gone through periods of ruining my life with my insane behavior, I like parts of my life, too.

From an evolutionary perspective, it's unclear whether mood disorders may be related to positive behaviors such as risk-taking, increased creativity, and certain aspects of intelligence. I read a book once that forwarded the idea that the U.S. had an increased incidence of bipolar because bipolar patients are more impulsive, thus people with manic tendencies were more likely to immigrate to America. So until we understand the genetics and physiology of affective disorders, we can't say that they're undesirable in the population. The benefits might outweigh the costs.

And I actually support eugenics, as in, being selective about who you reproduce with based on genetic factors that will affect the child's quality of life, but forced breeding programs are all kinds of wrong.

Well, I am in favor of opening more mental health facilities as a way to break the 'lather, rinse, repeat' cycle that occurs when people go off their meds, wind up in the hospital for 72 hours, and are released again, but there's a difference between clinics designed to help people stay on their meds and integrate with society and the mental hospitals of yesteryear.

As for sterilization, can we sterilize out stupid? Because this guy seems to be a prime target for it. I hope he wins a Darwin Award.

Why can't we just work on removing the adoption stigma? I'd like to live in a world where those of us with genetic illnesses can adopt without everyone assuming it's because our 'nads don't work, and for people with working 'nads to consider adoption regardless of their genetic health.

Completely aside from the well-established idiocy in thinking that mental illness = miserable life, the medications are also getting better all the time. Five years ago I would have had to stop taking any mood stablizers if I wanted to have a child; now I can stay on the Lamictal.

Now, I don't wanna start up a wank here or anything, but it causes me some mild butthurt when people with some form of mental or emotional instability use schizophrenia as default for Really Crazy. Like "God, I don't need to be locked up, i'm not SCHIZO or anything!"

Hi! Schizophrenic and not ax-crazy. really.

Everyone has several stretches of DNA code which reinforced by a matching bit from a mate or "turned on" by developmental conditions will have some effect which reduces quality of life.

I'd sure as hell be more prone to lean on people who don't have their offspring treated for psychological, neurological, educational, mental or physical disorders of all origins than to try to single out a few mental disorders with known genetic components for social stigma.

But that's just me.
