Clearly it has to be a male because only men read comics, and the proof is that women just don't get involved in major promotions like this.

.....

Yeah.

Glad to see they changed their minds, if only because the lawyers breathed down their necks.

I for one will not be seeing the movie. And I've been looking forward to it since LAST years SDCC.

I'm with some of the commenters. This sounds an awful lot like someone "winning" an unpaid job. That said, the exclusion rule is still BULLSHIT.

This comment "Thom" wins, however:

I think I will enter. If I win, I will go in drag.

Well there's a movie I'll not be seeing, and a website I'll not be visiting for a while...

I mean it's bad enough when trolls pull the, "There are no girl-gamers/fangirls/comic fans" but when actual companies do it? Guh.

Um yeah, that shit ain't legal. I'm glad they opened it up, although they shouldn't have had to be TOLD "That shit ain't legal" in the first place.

The age thing is weirding me out too. If people over 25 don't like comics, the nonexistence corner just got a whole lot more crowded.

It's not even comics. It the sci-fi movie District 9, and their 'target' audience is men between 18 and 25, because you know woman don't like sci-fi and once your over 25 you aren't spending your money on movies

Bleh.

I hope a girl wins. I hope it's the fattest girl ever.*

*) I mean, an "unattractive" girl by conventional standards, rather than a pretty model-type nerd fantasy. If they want to use the winner for promotional purposes, and fear their (male! male!) audience would already be weirded out by a female creature, imagine what horror they would go through if that female creature looked like a real woman instead of one from TV. :)

I was really, really, really looking forward to that movie. Several of my friends adored the book it was based on, and the trailers looked phenomenal. Intelligent, socially aware sci-fi is exactly what I've been looking for. Too bad that they apparently missed the entire point of the movie. (i.e., discrimination is wrong.) Fail. Epic fail.

While IGN supports gamers of all ages, genders, shapes and sizes, these guidelines were created to foster a buzz for the film among a very narrow target group that the film’s promoters felt would be extremely passionate about the film’s subject matter.

Balls, balls, suck my balls. (Mine are the ballsiest balls of all.)

That can be answered quite matter-of-factly by presenting some revenue figures.

No, women aren’t worth much in revenue when it comes to comics, sci-fi, or videogames.

I would like to hurt this person.

Why would they be open about something like that? Why not allow both genders to enter, and then rig the selection process so only men can win? That's what everybody else does.

Next you'll tell us that that women shouldn't be leads in video games because it won't sell well because "majority" men gamers wouldn't be interested. (Warning: Video gets Fanboy Loud.)

We the mods got a polite e-mail from Johanna Draper Carlson, the writer of the blog post you re-posted here, asking "that you respect my copyright and edit this post to include only a link and an excerpt, not the entire post and not the comments."

UFB doesn't have an official policy on long quotations or copyright as long as you aren't violating the JF TOS, so this is not an order from the mods, but I told Johanna I'd pass on her request to you in case you wanted to act, since there was no direct way for her to contact you.

Peace out,
me.
