Iranian election aftermath
Election fallout in Iran.

AT least 10 leaders of two Iranian reformist groups who backed defeated presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi have been arrested.

The arrests follow riots by thousands of opposition supporters and furious complaints of cheating after Friday's elections, which saw incumbent hardliner Mahmoud Ahmadinejad declared the winner.

Mr Ahmadinejad went on television to declare the election a "great victory", even as baton-wielding police were clashing with protesters in the streets of the capital in unrest not seen since student riots a decade ago.

A more in-depth summery of the events taking place in Iran: [info]one_hoopy_frood's 'Why you should care' (This is a good link to share). 'Why I will not let it go (and neither should you)' has 'what can I do to help?' list, and [info]ontd_political's live post is here.

I can't even think of anything to say aside from they'll all be in my thoughts and prayers.

The "what can I do to help?" list is useful, but I still feel like there's more I could be doing. Anyone know what kind of organizations (Amnesty International, etc.) have the most effective plans if I decide to donate money? I don't want to be donating to something that's not really going to help, as money's really tight right now, but I can still spare some if I know it's going to the right place.

All I can find on Amnesty Internation is a letter-writing campaign.

Pretty much everything else I can find is pleas to retwitter, offer your computer as a proxy, redistribute images, blog, and that kind of thing.

It's so fucking crazy how Iran is in the news like this. I have heard more Farsi from watching MSM in the last week than in the last couple of years. (Which is confusing, I only hear Farsi from my parents.)

Having said that, I feel so useless. Iran is what my parents talk about all the time, about the Shah, about how they were on the streets in 1979 (they were students much like those brave students on the streets right now), about how everything went to dust. And now this happens and I can do nothing but hope that my family there comes out okay and that those protesters don't die.

However, I'm not so impressed with people's fixation on pretty Iranian girls. I felt really uneasy when I heard Dutch radio presentators going on about how zomg beautiful they were with their sexy head scarves. Feels like Orientalism at its finest. (Don't get me wrong, though. I'm pretty happy at people not thinking that Iranians are all ugly dumb people.)

I don't get how these radio presenters are being at all relevant.

Seems like even in a time like this they have to remind people that women, particularly of the foreign stripe, are supposed to be pretty objects to look at. How grossly inappropriate.

I was wondering about that, having noticed the manicures, makeup, and accessories in some of the news photos.

I was too, I guess its a way of protesting we just don't understand since we can wear whatever the hell we want. You know?

re icon: I'd have my green icon here by my paid account is dead so I can't upload new ones.

That is very interesting, thank you for the link.

(It doesn't mean a number of commentators don't miss the point, though, of course).

That's a good article (with nice links), yeah, and it pretty much rings true.

It makes me grit my teeth at how the thing "humanising" Iran and Iranians (and other countries) for some people is pictures of pretty girls. I actually thought hearing how these people got their vote stolen and are fighting for their rights, and hearing how the Iranian people suffered under all these regimes and in all those wars, would be enough to interest people.

Anyway. Go Iranian people, go!

I've been following this obsessively on Twitter. I can't tell you how many times I've had to post something akin to "STOP NAMING THE IRANIAN TWITTERS ALREADY FOR CHRIST'S SAKE." That said, it has been undeniably useful for getting information.

I also recommend the live-blogs on the Huffington Post, the NY Times, and Andrew Sullivan's blog.

Ugh. It's only been stated a thousand times before. I actually don't have a Twitter, but I may get one because of this.

Thanks for the recommendations; I've added them to the main post (and also to my bookmarks).

You don't need a twitter account to follow, I think. Just do a search like this:

Actually, just follow the link.

I've also been following this page:

I haven't even looked at any of the YouTube videos aside from one I was linked of the protesters asking some police officers who they voted for and embracing them. I've seen quite a few photos already; I'm not sure I have the heart to watch videos.

YouTube actually relaxed their policy to allow videos like that from Iran. I'm glad they did. Of course it's hard to watch, but it's really important that people know about this stuff.

Quite a few causes have been created on Facebook in support of the Iranian people. If you've got a Facebook, go to causes and search "Iran election" and you'll find some. Not a great news source, but a good way to show your support.

I feel kind of shallow for it, but I made a flair of your icon to show my support. It came out horribly, but not being very good at technology or anything else, I didn't know what else I could do.

Thanks for the tip about the causes. I'm joining as many as I can.

The sad thing is: As expected, some republicans are now saying they're basically like the Iranians due to how the democrats oppress them.

Seriously? Seriously? Jesus, and then Republicans have the gall to act offended when people call them on their atrocious behavior.

I probably don't want to do this, but do you have a link to an article? (I don't want to read a bunch of Republican whining, but I should stay informed.) Or is this just what you've been hearing?
