Warnings Wank 2: Electric Clusterfuck
This shit be ugly y'all.

Following the previous 1000 comment unfunnybusiness post there have been some further entries to the fail-lympics, and to make things slightly easier and spare [info]doriangray's inbox I'm making a new post.

First, an update that didn't make it into the original post: [info]wistfuljane posts an open letter to zvi, thanks to [info]ingrid for linking it. There is, naturally, more wank in the comments.

Now for some new stuff. From [info]wank_report, the mousies found a couple of new posts on the issue, each one with its own wank. The first definitely has more than the second, starting with a lovely quote in the post:

"2. If you're that mentally and emotionally fragile, you probably shouldn't be reading fic at all. Or watching television. Or reading regular novels. And for god's sake, you'd better get off the internet right now."

That turns into a nice little teal deer wankfest in the comments.

There is some voice of reason in both posts. It is far too dilute to be of any good.

Finally, we have an added enormous clusterfuck inside the house. [info]esorlehcar and [info]oulangi get into a monstrously ugly fight in the comments of the first post. I don't even know, kids, I really don't.

And that's the ugliness. Anyone else has major developments they want to link put 'em in the comments, I'll try to keep up but I make no guarantees.

ETA 1: [info]agent_hyatt reports further wank inside the house. On a completely ADD note, I really need to figure out if I can do that Il Pallazzo cosplay.....

ETA 2: [info]caoilainn drops us a couple more links with plenty of wank to go around. Enormous clusterfuck is ENORMOUS.

ETA 3: More from inside the house, courtesy of [info]miss_padfoot. Here it's [info]misswindy talking about potential connections with racefail and setting off another hoard of teal deer.

ETA 4: A couple fresh links for you courtesy of [info]kelmendi and [info]esclaramonde! Aukestrel puts up an apology/flounce and zvi puts up what I might even call a genuine apology.

ETA 5: [info]sparklepuss brings us one more passenger on the failboat. ETA 5.5: And another.

It's not so unusual that something like a yaoi warning might show up on a yaoi comm, though. If you post a fic in more than one location, you might just decide to keep the warnings intact for each location even if they aren't necessary in one of them. Also, there was a huge blow up on one of the HP chan mailing lists a few years ago, because the mod insisted on stripping the chan warnings from fics posted to the list because she said they weren't necessary. A lot of the writers got upset because the list's archive was available to the public, and people were linking to stuff that had no chan warnings on it so if you weren't aware of the content of the list you could stumble across something you weren't prepared for and might not want to read. It's better to be safe and warn for things anyway, even if it seems redundant to the location you're posting in, IMO.

Well ultimately it doesn't bother me, although I find it hugely redundant if the pairing is also listed, as I find it redundant to put incest if you also put the pairing in. I was listing off warnings to my friend on chat last night, and we having a good laugh about it, as people were also warning 'light violence', 'some mentions of het' (when it's rated NC-17), 'baked products' etc, etc.

But whatever, I guess if you over-warn it's better then anything, although I understand where the BDSM people are coming from.

But my point being is that as long as community rules are met, and everyone is clear on them, then any harm should be minimal. So I don't understand why this is a pan-fandom wank. OK, yes I kindave do, but still? Right, this is getting way silly.

Well, I personally over-warn because I want people who are interested in reading my story to know what's in it. I'm shallow that way.

There are countless people who use warnings as an ADVERTISEMENT. I do. I'm surprised more of the anti-warning crowd don't see it that way.

I hadn't thought of it that way, but you are right. It would be a great way to advertise your fic.
