Josephwaldman posts to the Atheism community on LJ with a link to an article about a US soldier using the Quran for target practice. He entitles his post "This man deserves a promotion." The community gives him a most gratifying smack-down.

Damn, why do all the communities I'm in wank about unfunny shit? Even the cat_macros wank is usually depressing!

You know, I'm an atheist, but shit like this makes me wish atheism had its own form of a sacred text, just so you could use it in an analogy. "Okay, I'm going to go shoot at [insert text here]. It's okay, it's just a book!" -.-

I mean, the soldier is dumbass of Brobgardian (sic) proportions, but the guy praising him sounds like someone who sticks electrodes up bulls' ass for a living and jerks off while doing it. Oh for fuck's sake.

It's people like that who give Atheists a bad name. Even on the atheism irc-channel that I'm on, people were laughing about the double-standards of the US military going "OMFG we're so sorry, we have total and deep respect for the Quran and Islam, no, seriously!" No one thought the soldier did a good thing, and may I just say, there are some pretty h/c Atheists on that channel.

Well, and possibly excluding Israel from the statement, most other forces perform at least a cursory check as to whether the moving things in front of them are hostile or not ;)
