Derailing for Dummies
This isn't news, nor is it particularly rage-inducing (save the terrible memories it calls upon,) but for other people that have butted heads over social issues and been reduced to angry tears in the process, I cannot possibly recommend this link highly enough:

http://www.derailingfordummies.com/

It also doubles as a bingo game!

Checked back through 20 posts to see if it was posted in the comments and didn't find it; if I'm double-posting anyway, Don't You Have More Important Issues to Think About?

My friend linked me to that a while back and I loved it. This will be a good chance to read the whole thing.

I hadn't seen this before, but it looks very useful. Thank you.

Genius.

If you go through to the about page the person states they were inspired by people who were against fail in RaceFail then proceeding to fail themselves on a different issue so hey at least it seems the whole warnings debacle achieved something other than giving us all rage induced migraines (y)

*rubs head* I read stuff like that and I have to fear that I'll ever been one of those type people. I don't want to be an asshole, and I do my best not to be, but then you see stuff like that and think...
*sigh* What is a Privaleged Person with Good Intentions and permanent Foot-in-Mouth disorder supposed to do?
In my case, usually shut up.

I understand. It can be difficult, because some of these categories can come up 'honestly' and without the person being a concern troll or trying to derail. But they've all been used in really negative circumstances so often, that the response is so negative, and sometimes the other person is left going 'buh..wait, what did I say?!' and then asking for more information is seen as 'Please educate me!' Yeah, google and so on can help, but it doesn't help to explain why the particularly person you were talking to got upset.

I'm glad to have been following these debates, because I didn't realise the negative connotations behind some of these derailments. Though reading it does make me nervous about replying at all, in some threads, so I just tend to say nothing.

:/ I know I leave myself open to a lot of criticism in these types of circumstances and it is probably well deserved. I have tried to educate myself, but the circles I go in (of course, I'm a bit of a recluse) just means I rarely deal with people who are outside of my demographic.
I'm a country hick from TN. *shrugs*

Bloghopping and lurking can do amazing things.

My advice, for what it's worth from some random Internetter:

Think before you speak, put yourself in the other person's shoes, and when you fail, try again.

I think most people fall on both sides of this depending on the issue under discussion, so implementing the Golden Rule ("how would I want to be treated?") can prove pretty useful. And I read a post recently, which I'd link you to if I recalled the author's name, which makes an important point: when someone points out that something one has done is objectionable, this is about behavior, not identity. One hasn't been branded Evil Forever; one has been informed to amend one's behavior by not doing X thing.

And, honestly, good intentions count for a lot, because bad ones shine right out through all the layers of sweetened bullshit people try to spread over them.

Wait...so, if you complain about something and the other person comes back with, "If you're that upset, go out and do something about it, don't just sit on the Internet and bitch. That's just pathetic!" where would that fall under?

That sounds like it'd be a sub-section of Don't You Have More Important Issues to Think About, maybe. ("Don't You Have More Important Things to Do?")
