Conservative groups call for domestic gag rule on contraceptives
Bush's choice to oversee national family planning policy, steps down

Looks like she's going back to those groups -- she belonged to them before.

I just read her proposal to change the structure of CPS (linked in the third comment), and now my face is stuck in an expression of abject horror. CPS is far from perfect, but the notion that we should "narrow the scope" of child abuse because then neighbors and charitable organizations will step in and help abusive parents fix themselves is so fucking ridiculous I can't stand it. Moms who scream invectives at their kids aren't guilty of serious maltreatment; they just need a babysitter for a day (no, I am not making this up)! And if teachers and doctors don't have to report suspicions of child abuse, only concrete evidence, that will totally drive the percentage of unsubstantiated reports down! There will be way more cases of unreported abuse, of course, but the statistics are just so much prettier her way. The contraception thing is just icing on the cake.

In short: Susan Orr, DIAF.

Advisory capacity only? "I advise you not to beat your children. I can't actually do anything to prevent that, but I can advise you that it's not in their best interests."

Agreed, DIAF.

For example, emotionally abusive behavior, such as screaming invectives at a child, may be poor parenting, but does not rise to the level of serious maltreatment.

I'm so angry I can't speak.

Godmotherfuckingdamnit.

"We're quite pleased because fertility is not a disease. It's not a medical necessity that you have [contraception]."

Women apparently NEVER ever take contraception for any other reason. I won't suffer severe anemia if stop taking the pill, I'm just refusing to take my proper place as a broodmare!

That makes two of us. Wonder what she'd think of my husband's voluntary decision to get a vasectomy?

Jesus, word. I take the pill because otherwise I would have to be hospitalized every month, not because I want to go slutting around with no kids (nevermind the fact that having a baby in the first place would most likely kill me). This + Her CPS Bullshit = Fuck Off And Die.

With out the pill my period would never stop.

Yeah, I love how they talk like pregnancies are never dangerous.

Mine's not that bad, but I got sent to the ER six or more times a year before my gyno said "Here, take these," and after that it was maybe once a year, maximum. Fuck this tart, I will not hand over my pills and start going through that again just to please her ideas of fertility.

I take the pills to treat PCOS. Actually had someone ask me "But isn't there a form of medication you could take that wouldn't potentially kill a child?!"

If the fertility that causes me to be [overshare menstrual side-effect here] for a week a month isn't a disease, I don't know what is.

"We're quite pleased because fertility is not a disease. It's not a medical necessity that you have [contraception]."

Unfortunately for her logic, health plans cover WAY more things than diseases. Aging? Not a disease. Falling down a flight of stairs and breaking both your legs? Not a disaese till the gangrene kicks in. Not knowing nutrition from a hole in the wall and being a couch potato? Not very disease-y. Being in a car accident and flipping out like a mammal about the fact you almost died? Not a disease!

And yet, because all three of these situations can alter the quality of your life for the worse, health plans do tend to pay for the medical and sociomedical interventions that ameliorate their effects. Because we are not hard-hearted ideologues, and the quality of people's lives is the whole point.

You forgot the best, a lot of health plans cover erectile dysfunction. Wanting to be able to enjoy sex is only okay if you're a man!

Bush Family Planning Appointee Who Called Contraceptives Part Of The ‘Culture Of Death’ Resigns

Statement on the Resignation of Dr. Susan Orr and Possible Changes to Title X

Best quote in both:
We are certainly relieved that a known opponent of access to contraception like Dr. Susan Orr is resigning from her position as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Population Affairs (DASPA), the position which oversees the only dedicated federal program for family planning services for low-income and uninsured people.
