There's a bingo tile in here somewhere...
For those of you who are not familiar with Warcraft, I'm sure you can still deduce that it's not a good idea to throw around derogatory terms like 'fag' in a community that is largely comprised of women and/or gays. Right?

[info]lougara would not agree with you. Because it's perfectly ok to use such derogatory terms on a community with over 6000 people on it!

She does apologize, sort of. In a 'sorry but I'll still do it if I want to' sort of way. Also, she is bisexual so it's totally ok!

Then she leaves a happy little love note on her friends only page on her personal lj.

GLAAD fights homophobia in online communities like WoW.

The ridiculous amount of "why are you not being tolerant of my intolerance!?" is not as astounding as I wish it were.

I should know better than to ever read gay-related posts on wow.com, but my trainwreck syndrome, it is strong. :(

I play on Proudmoore. The Gayest Place in the World (of Warcraft). In what's probably the biggest LGBT gaming guild on any MMO.

I focus on our little oasis and when I see LGBT (or women) related posts on WoW.com I keep on scrolling. It's done wonders for keeping me sane in the game.

I run into that a lot when I call people on using "gay" as an insult. "It's just a general insult, it doesn't refer to people who are gay!" Then why is it insulting? "Um... It just is." Maybe because it... refers to people who are gay?

And then one person I was talking with followed it up with "Oh lol I guess you're right, but I'm still gonna use it."

There are not enough ellipses in the world.

I don't use that word to make fun of homosexuals ... I-and people in my social group- use that word for someone who's whiny and bitchy.

I propose that we use the term "lougara" to describe people who are being raging self-righteous asshats. Not to make fun of lougara, of course -- just as a word. Because that totally makes sense.

Okay, one of my gay guy friends will call another of my gay guy friends "fag" when he's particularly irritated with him, but I would never presume to do the same. This isn't a particularly difficult concept.

I actually would have assumed you're Alliance from that. Because I play Alliance and OH GOD MAKE HIM GO AWAY. D: Can we get Bolvar back? Can we at least get the kid back? Please? Fuckit, I'll settle for Ony being in charge -- at least she wasn't starting wars with the Horde while we're still fighting the Legion and the Scourge and the fucking Defias are still being annoying and and and AUGH!

I've used "Christian" instead of "gay" when talking to people like lougara. Their screams of outrage were delightful.

Okay, seriously, can I just say I'm really fucking tired of ignorant homophobic jagoffs playing the "lol I'm a bisexual!" card when saying something really goddamn ignorant and jagoffish and homophobic?

Plz to be exiting my orientation immediately and stop reinforcing the stereotype of embracing hetero privilege that makes everyone hate us.

Also choking on a large rusty railroad spike would be appropriate.

Well, I'm bi and mostly my circle of friends is GLBT, and yeah, we do use Finnish words for gay and fag around each other. I'd still say I'm not homophobic. Using those words around strangers? Not necessarily such a good idea, but I can understand letting it slip if you're used to using them around your friends. I'm not saying this person isn't a douche, they are, and they need to curb their self-entitlement, but I just don't think someone's necessarily a homophobe just because they use a word that can also be used as an insult.

I'm not sure if I'm making any sense, but anyway.
