Oh, for fuck's sake.
The America I know and love is not one in which my parents or my baby with Down Syndrome will have to stand in front of Obama's "death panel" so his bureaucrats can decide, based on a subjective judgment of their "level of productivity in society," whether they are worthy of health care. Such a system is downright evil.

-Sarah Palin on health care reform.

'Fess up, those of you in countries with socialized medicine! We want to hear all about the Death Panels, government mandated sex changes and killings of the olds (their time is up when the crystal flashes in their hand, dontchaknow).

(This thread is going to trigger the spam filters like whoa. Protip for others: "s0c1alized" spelled correctly will set off the filter and not tell you!)

We want to hear all about the Death Panels, government mandated sex changes and killings of the olds (their time is up when the crystal flashes in their hand, dontchaknow).

Oh, totally. That's why my paternal grandparents got bumped off once they hit 65 -- and they got an extra five years only because they had my dad late in life. (The trick to living longer under s0c1alized medicine is to be a Catholic, it seems.) *serious nod*

Seriously, how the fuck to people actually believe this shit when there's absolutely no indication of this? I mean, there's plenty of countries with "s0c1alised medicine" or whatever you want to call it, and we blatantly obviously don't kill off the weak and the old. (Not saying it's all ideal, but it's leaps better than what I know of the US system.) And yet ... shit like this.

I pretty much have no choice but to read this as "S0c1alized medicine is all good and well for other countries, but if we try it here, it will be a DISASTER, because, um, WE'RE NUMBER ONE, WE'RE NUMBER ONE!"

Hi, my name is IT, and I live in Canada.

My sister was born with asthma, and has aspbergers. Yeah, you know, that disease. She was in and out of hospitals until she was three, and until she was ten or twelve, we went every year to the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario. She is mentally twelve. She may never, ever, get a job, or be normal. But we didn't have to pay a dime to get her treated.

Fuck you, Ms. Palin.

I'm not even going to get into all the crap that happened to me.

Of course. Italy's death panels are why my father received stellar and free health care even as his liver was inevitably failing from Hep C. At age 80.

And my mother went through expensive and futile treatments to revive her after she was in coma from a massive heart attack. Free! Including the helicopter ride to the best hospital in the region! And she was 76! The doctors performed above and beyond their call of duty, and I will be forever grateful to them that I could be there to hold my mother's hand as she passed.

Oh! The evils of socialized medicine! FUCKING FUCK.

Well, obviously we can't trust your opinion...by suggesting that there is not a segment of Obama's bill (secret enough that it's not actually in the text of the bill, but not so secret that every right-wing douchebag who hasn't read the bill hasn't figured it out) mandating every straw-man conspiracy-theory "leftist" "big-government" population-control scheme in the books, you prove that you are a baby-and-grandma-killing totalitarian Stalinist and thus cannot be trusted.

Due to the evils of my socialized (but free) health care, I had to wait an entire week for a non-urgent dentist's appointment, and a month for a free (non-urgent) MRI. Those bastards! When I was in the hospital and the MRI was urgent because they suspected a brain tumor, I got it the same day. Also for free. This week I have (free) appointments with my GP and a psychiatrist. Both will give me prescriptions for (free) medicines. My mother's Death Panel held a meeting last week, and she got a prescription for (free) physical therapy and (free) drugs because of her back trouble. Shame on them.

Well, my Grandmother is still getting treated for her many medical problems, and she doesn't have to pay for it! I believe she had her varicose veins done recently.

I know there are cases where doctors say that some one is too old (and usually not doing well health and/or fitness wise), but that is more to do with the likely success rate and post operative/post treatment improvement in life. I think those things should always be taken into account when deciding to treat some one. That's not to say we can't do with improving our care of the elderly/vulnerable, because we most certainly can.

But I have to wonder, what happens to the elderly person in America who has just enough to barely get by, who then gets sick? They couldn't afford insurance, what then? Do they get treated for emergency things while the bills pile up? But get no preventative or managing type care?

What about those with chronic illnesses that can't get insurance?

And just to point this out, there is nothing stopping some one in the UK from getting medical insurance as well as private care if they so choose. Of course, most my friends who are nurses think you are crazy if you do that, because they are the ones who end up cleaning up the mess.

I'd rather have the Death Panel than the current American system, in which the attitude seems to be "Well, if you don't want to drive your disabled wife thirty thousand dollars into debt while you die of cancer, you should have been upper middle class! Shame, shame!"

Aside from my grandfather's debts he left behind while he was dying, my poor grandmother can't even spare the money to fill her painkillers. It's depressing as hell. She's always on the phone calling people and they're always doing everything in their power to avoid helping her, telling her she's not sick enough or has to jump through this hoop or that hoop, and usually pay her own money to do so. (To prove you're eligible for this and that, you've got to get a physical, even if you got one only a couple months ago, and you have to pay for it out of your own pocket, which Gram can in no way afford to do ... and so on and so forth.) The last time she managed to get something easily she was put on the phone with a woman who told her there was plenty to go around and there was no reason why they should be dicking with her like that, that it was a crying shame, and she got taken care of within about ten minutes. Good woman.

Also, a couple days ago I got a letter in the mail telling me I've been denied for free healthcare (the Husky plan, which is for under 21s in Connecticut), because "child lives with both his/her parents." I don't even know what that means! I guess only single parents are destitute enough that their children can't afford healthcare. (I didn't even really live with my parents when I applied, anyway, I sort of lived wherever, I just needed an address to get healthcare - another bit of weirdness. For some reason my social worker wouldn't let me apply as homeless, or they don't give homeless people healthcare, or I don't know what. I don't really understand any of this.) Jesus, when I was doing the vagrant teenage prostitute thing a year or two ago I tried to go to social services, they wouldn't even pay to test me for STDs.

(Er ... if anybody knows of a free STD clinic in Connecticut, I'd really, really appreciate it. I can't find one, so I was waiting to get healthcare to get checked out, only it looks like that's not going to happen. But I really don't have hundreds of dollars to drop on this shit.)

Anyway, they're all bloodsucking bastards and I could rant about this for hours, but I'll just go back to sulkily printing out fliers for the Young Communist League. Sorry.

*sulk, print, sulk*

My socialized healthcare is so evil, I have to pay for private health insurance!

If it weren't covered by my university, it would be $50 a month. And only cover things the province didn't already make free, like dental care and my podiatrist.

(Did You Know: the Canadian military has funded its soldiers' sex change operations? EVIL! Of course, it was more like a loophole somebody found out about and used than a program they hand out brochures for, but still...)

It's kinda scary how many people actually believe this stuff. There was a letter to the editor in my local newspaper today claiming that Obama has already started trying to kill old people because the swine flu vaccine is being recommended for younger people first. Sure, it could be because the elderly are less likely to catch and die from this particular strain of flu and so the government wants to take care of higher-risk groups first, but that would mean using logic and facts. It's clearly more sensible to decide that it's all part of Obama's dastardly plan to kill off old people using a combo of socia1ism and swine flu, the S's of Doom.

Until this day I did not believe Republicans could sink so low as to grossly mischaracterize social programs created by Democrats solely to score political points with insurance companies.

If ever the Democrats needed that push to keep moving even further left, this is it. The sheer ludicrousness of what the Republicans are getting up to defies comprehension.

Oh, and go back under your rock, Sarah Palin.

Oh, FFS. I'm a Republican and I have to say that I am against a public plan. Not for any of those nonsense reasons, but because I don't think we can afford it. The CBO has indicated that none of the plans put forth so far are deficit neutral and that most of them will end up driving us to penury in under ten years.

But this shit? This death panel, OH NOES NOT MY MEDICARE EBIL GOVERMINT, attack your Congressperson shit? Is driving me batty. If we don't have a free and open debate and let this fail (or succeed, Dems! I suppose it could happen) on its own merits, we'll be having this same ridiculous propaganda campaign debate every decade.

And, crazy conservatives? Pro-tip: Medical care is already rationed. Money is a rationing device.

Oh, yes, socialized health care is very evil. The fact that we have compulsory universal health care is absolutely absurd! When my dear old grandfather suffered a cerebrovascular accident, he obviously should've paid for his physiotherapy rather than get it subsidized almost entirely by his HMO. And the pills I need for my body to function normally? It's completely silly that they cost 3 bucks for a package of 20 pills because most of the price is covered by the government. And it's outrageous, the fact that whenever I have a stuffy nose I get to go to my doctor for free! Obviously I should man up and learn to live with my recurring sinusitis.

*facepalm*

The America I know and love is not one in which my parents or my baby with Down Syndrome will have to stand in front of Obama's "death panel" so his bureaucrats can decide, based on a subjective judgment of their "level of productivity in society," whether they are worthy of health care

There are insurance companies in the US now that will take parents of a child with Down Syndrome?

It's so fucking strange to hear what rich people think socialized medicine is like. It's been my only form of health care since birth, and nobody's asked me to kill myself for Uncle Sam yet.

The Obama Plan's suggestion that people with a terminal disease would get "end of life counselling" was bound to be misunderstood.

I can understand why ordinary people are scared - they are worried they'll get all the worst features of the Health Management Organizations (in which a medically ignorant bureaucrat frequently does tell the doctors what they can and can't do), with none of the ultra-high-tech benefits and no way out of a Kafka-esque nightmare.

They're also worried about the standard of the doctors who will be treating them under a socialized system, and that is a legitimate fear that must be addressed. It may be unfounded (though the existence of fuckwits like Michael Jackson's personal physicians makes me wonder), but it must be addressed.
