Stargate Fail, say it ain't so!
(I thought about putting this on [info]fandom_lounge, but let's face it, this isn't even remotely funny. Unless maybe in the kind of, "I laugh lest I cry" way.)

2009 sure seems to be the Year of Fail.

The writers of Stargate aren't exactly famous for their social awareness and political correctness, what with all the unintentional moral ambiguity in their shows (rape is funny, dontcha know!), but they sure topped themselves with their latest Stargate: Universe casting call for the episode "Sabotage".

[ELEANOR PERRY] (35-40) and quite attractive. A brilliant scientist who happens to be a quadriplegic. Affected since childhood, her disability has rendered her body physically useless. However, after being brought on board the Destiny as the only person who may be able to save the ship and her crew from certain annihilation, she is given temporary powers that enable her to walk again and to finally experience intimacy.sptv050769..Strong guest lead. NAMES PREFERRED. ACTRESS MUST BE PHYSICALLY THIN. (THINK CALISTA FLOCKHART).

Source

Yeeaaaah. The sexism aside, it's nice of them to include a disabled person in their cast, isn't it? Though God forbid they should actually treat the disability in any sane manner. No, let's just Magically Heal It, so she can finally be socially acceptable and experience intimacy! For the first time in her life! OMG.

Apparently there are also rumous that the Magic Healing will happen through body-swapping technology, which raises some very valid questions about how exactly she will lose her virginity. Personally, since this is all forum talk, I'm hoping it won't be as skeevy as it sounds, but knowing the writers, I'm not holding my breath.

Also, Ming-Na, whose character is gay, posts on her Twitter: Just read "Sabotage." Wow. SGU is really challenging my acting chops! I LOVE our writers! Can't wait 2 work on this episode! xoxo Which, you know. Doesn't sound promising, but who knows, might be a coincidence!

These shenanigans have raised a bit of a reaction amongst the fans.

[info]sheafrotherdon has a post up listing several contacts if people feel like raising a fuss about this. I sure do.

BA Haller @ Media Dis & Dat wrote about it.

[info]dogeared contacted the Disability Rights Education & Defense Fund and got a reply from executive director Susan Henderson, agreeing that it's distressing, and indicating that they'd like to follow the trail.

ETA: This just keeps getting unfunnier and unfunnier. The rumours have been confirmed that Eleanor indeed does switch bodies with the gay character, and proceeds to HAVE SEX IN THAT BODY. STRAIGHT SEX.

I can't even.

[info]sheafrotherdon has more on this latest bit of news.

I admire the Stargate franchise for managing to offend me more with every iteration. Which is pretty amazing for a canon that basically says the ancient Egyptians needed space aliens to do anything of note.

I know. God, I know. I was fairly young when I still watched SG-1, so all the fuck-upedness flew over my head. With SGA I just kinda... I hated it and facepalmed it, but was willing to tolerate it for the awesomeness that the majority of the characters were, and my McShep.

But this is just. Aaaagh.

I've never watched a full episode, but my dad watches it and... AAARGH. I mean, he says race issues don't impede his enjoyment of the show, and I can imagine that, to a certain degree, but I still can't understand how he can tolerate something so openly offensive.

It's so hard to watch SG-1 once you've studied archaeology to any extent, especially Egyptology, especially with the racism underlying the whole pyramid thing. Because yes, in the SG universe, sure, Daniel's right about aliens building the pyramids. But that's an actual theory some (crazy) people have, and when you remember that the academic community as a whole seems to regard Daniel as a batshit nutjob, you can't blame them in the least. They're the smart ones.

I really wish they'd picked some less loaded civilization/landmark/etc. than ancient Egypt. Something that doesn't already have the undertone of "Of course aliens built the pyramids, those stupid primitive Egyptians sure couldn't have!"

I made it two or three DVDs into SG1 and quit because I couldn't handle so much excused/ignored rape and attempted rape and sexual harassment. The rest either hadn't come along yet or didn't penetrate my brain until later. So -- yeah, it's impressive.

Oh, so we got
-actress needs to be fitting to a narrow beauty standart
-portrays a character that has "an useless body" which is apparently the reason she can't find any kind of intimacy, but which will be cured, so she can be a perfectly acceptable person and have sex
-a possibly gay character who may, or may not, have a body swap storyline so all the heteronormative people don't have to be too worried to have icky gay in their Sci-Fi
-possible HEALING COCK YAY

Stuff like this reminds me why I have only watched two western TV series this year...

According to [info]sheafrotherdon, who's read the audition sides, it gets even more horrifying if you know the context of the plot.

Which is, apparently, that the disabled woman swaps bodies with the able, gay woman, and then takes that opportunity to go try and get laid. With men. One of whom is apparently too noble to take advantage, or something, and the other who isn't.

So, let's see. I count ableism, female virginity fetish, lesbian character('s body) involved in straight sex, two different kinds of attempted rape of that character('s body) of the part of both Perry and the male character...

I'm pretty sure this degree of fail can be seen from space. Or from Earth, looking out at space.

It's Stargate, the franchise is made of fail. I knew going into watching SGA, that I was going to be disappointed, because heh - the writers are morons, one of my close friends watched the original series, and gave me blow by blow stories of how idiotic the writers were. But there was this teeny tiny spark of hope.

Now that spark is gone forever, and there is just no way I'll ever be able to watch this show, because it will FAIL, FAIL FAIL FAIL! And anyone who thinks otherwise is hopelessly naive. There I said it.

You know, I'm not even going to comment on any of the specific FAIL here.

I just want to say that I'm glad I've gotten all this advance warning about this show, which I would have undoubtedly given a chance if all I knew about it was "it's another Stargate show". At least it won't be able to lure me in with potentially promising aspects and then spring the FAIL on me like SGA did.

io9 has some commentary, including a message from Brad Wright and Robert Cooper: "Recently, a casting breakdown was released to agents for a upcoming character in our television show, Stargate Universe. The character, Doctor Eleanor Perry, is a brilliant scientist at the top of her field, who also happens to be a quadriplegic. As part of a science fiction conceit that is core to our series, Perry's consciousness is temporarily exchanged with one our series main characters, Camile Wray, who is a lesbian. In the course of the story, Perry has the experience of being able bodied for the first time since she was a child. At the same time, Wray, temporarily encumbered by Perry's physical disability, experiences the unconditional love of her life partner. The language of the breakdown was insensitive and inaccurate, and we sincerely apologize to those who may have been offended. The audition pages that have been under scrutiny were from an early draft and released out of context. It is our desire and intention to portray both characters with dignity and respect, while remaining mindful of the ethical issues we're raising."

We'll see...
