No it isn't. It's about Obama. Being Black. Being not a Republican. Being scaaaaaaaary in whatever way the talk radio and other media tell them he is scary. You know, the Soc1al1st boogie monster. It's not really about health care reform.

I love how suddenly the right supports people's right to dissent and freedom of speech, and that freedom of speech means freedom to bully people without getting called on it. Disrupting meetings to prevent discussion and information exchange? Carrying huge guns at crowded events featuring the president? That's FREE EXPRESSION, that is. Objecting to these tactics because, say, the guns look like an assassination threat? That's RESTRICTING FREEDOM OF SPEECH.

And two weeks ago, a New Mexico man tweeted that reform opponents should bring guns to town halls and "badly hurt" SEIU reps.

But no, they're only bringing guns because they have a right to, you know.

And why? Why are people so fucking threatened by health care reform?

Quite honestly, I think the people who are reacting this badly aren't threatened by health care reform so much as the fact that it's a black guy who wants it. (And it doesn't help that we have people in the media claiming it's a giant conspiracy to kill old people, rather than arguing against it on logical political grounds. Way to be, far right!)

Some of this may be coming from the gun-rights crowd. An attempt to prove how their rights are being trampled by the violence inherent in the system.

Too bad it's their violence that's inherent.

I'm not looking forward to the point where a far-left type decides that what's good for the right is good for them. T'aint going to be pretty.

One of the sad things is, if the Secret Service goes after those wingnuts they'll start the "OBAMA WANTS TO TAKE OUR GUNS AWAY!" meme again. And then some of them will get really wound up.

This whole thing makes me tense as hell.

There's a massive thread discussing this at Pandagon, and it got so huge and a bit wanky that I considered writing it up here for a bit. The consensus seems to be that the men who wore their guns out in the open in Arizona did so as RL trolls, probably hoping that they would get harassed and make it an issue, as some people suggest above. (Which didn't work out for them, fortunately. I'm hoping the pictures getting around start some good ol' media backlash, meself.) There's one particular commenter in there, Caton, who really starts frothing about he would "much rather it's one of you" liberals who gets shot at one of these rallies...and by "you" he means liberals who believe that it's not illegal for people to carry their holstered guns in a state with open-carry laws. Immoral, unfortunate, idiotic, yes; but illegal: no.

It's an interesting read, and still going.

In all seriousness, the vitriol that's been spewed over this is amazing. If you told me six months ago that people would go this bugshit over health care reform, I woulda laughed.

Ah, verbal gunfights. They never seem to end, just die down for awhile with a lot of skittish hiding and waiting until a stray bullet goes off and everyone starts firing again. Usually after some nut goes on a shooting spree or someone decides that pulling a stupid stunt like this (Really, you have to wonder about the thought process here. "Hey, I know how to get attention! I'll wave an assault rifle around where the President is! How could that possibly go wrong?") is a good idea.

I don't understand this. I mean, I don't exactly have a whole lot of respect for authority figures, but the idea of non-guard types having a gun around the President just seems wrong to my brain. Like, it's just not done. I can wrap my brain around all the other wacky nonsense, but I cannot believe people are doing this and no one is really calling them on it.

Good lord, people. How ignorant do you have to be to bring guns, loaded at that, to where the president is? These people should just be arrested on grounds of sheer stupidity. It's not about your right to bear arms. It's about the security people having no way of knowing who's the crazed would-be assassin, and who's just the fucking moron with a gun.

As a gun owner this makes me squint.

Was it specifically loaded? Because that's just bleeding retarded.
Hell, my state allows open carry. But, you know, if I ever have to, for some bizzare reason waltz through the center of my fairly touristy town with my rifle strapped to my back, it sure as hell isn't loaded, the magazine is detatched, as is the bolt, and the gun is locked with a proper gun lock, ya'know, so that people can see that it's a) not loaded b) is unable to fire without considerable prep time.

People have the right to bear arms, but not the right to bear arms in a place that makes it look as if they're going to assassinate someone.

I hope the guns turn on them, so they're eliminated from the gene pool.
