Alexander the Drake ([info]atdrake) wrote in [info]unfunnybusiness,
I think you're in luck!

Not only are the feds throwing extra money at researching “medical isotope alternatives” (trying to save face on the Chalk River deliberate-lack-of-maintenance shutdown aspect of the blame equation), but no fewer than two provinces want to start up their own reactor-based and electron accelerator-based facilities as part of the fallout, so you'll probably have a guaranteed post-grad job here*, too, if whichever better suits you gets off the drawing table.

Sovereignty in this matter is an increasingly hot topic up here, underscored by the entire US-slagging-off-Canada's-healthcare-which-makes-us-appreciate-and-defend-it-all-the-more thing and they're not going to dare to make cuts in this particular area for a while yet.

* Since most Statesiders are unfamiliar with the Prairie provinces, I feel I should point out the relative advantages and disadvantages of those two.

Saskatchewan: Saskatoon berries (nutritious and delicious! taste nothing like chicken!), and home of Tommy Douglas, officially voted The Greatest Canadian, father of Medicare (and grandfather of Kiefer Sutherland) whose government also gave us our standard 8-hour per day/5-day work week and public arts funding and pensions for seniors, among other things. Sadly moving in a reactionary-looking right-wing direction these days, and occasionally prone to publicly-paid-for persons trying to use private religious excuses to deny others their legal rights, for which they get rightfully slapped down.

Manitoba: has a very nice Icelandic-Canadian community with associated cultural festivals, tends to produce a fair number of acclaimed poets and authors, including sf/fantasy award-winners Guy Gavriel Kay (recommended if you like alt-history-based fantasy) and A.E. Van Vogt. Winnipeg does double duty as the car theft capital of Canada, and there seems to be a disproportionate amount of crime/potential natural disaster in the general area, which also suffers from depressed economy as far as I can tell, but on the upside, no major political scandals noted in Wikipedia's list.

The weather for both is pretty much the same. Pack lots of warm winter clothing and get used to waddling around looking like the Michelin Man.
