Neuroscientist Ogi Ogas ([info]ogi_ogas, working with Sai Gaddam/[info]saigaddam) posts a survey about slash fic as part of a project (a book, actually, though they don't bother to mention that), because "We're deeply interested in broad-based behavioral data that involves romantic or erotic cognition and evinces a clear distinction between men and women. Fan fiction matches this criteria perfectly" (link to FAQ). It's advertised on crack_van.

They have an open discussion post for the survey. People bring up the many issues they have with the questions (and [info]eruthros, who mods kink_bingo on DW, posts their interaction with the researchers, who approached them about participating. This is where we find out they're working on a book.). (ETA: Ogas has also set up this post to discuss individual questions.)

It's not wanky, just very, very unfunny. If you want to read the questions, someone on the Doctor Who anonmeme copied them: 1-30, 31-70. If you read them, though: be warned: one of the questions (#61) can be considered triggery.

ETA2: Ogas has posted each question individually in this post. The potentially triggering question still appears on page 3 of comments, though they have since replaced the question within the survey with a totally different one.

ETA3: Ogas has taken down the survey (and changed the body of all journal entries) to "digest all this great feedback." It looks like he has stopped responding to comments, including those with legitimate questions like "Did you get IRB approval for this?"

From [info]notjo: "[info]jonquil's post on the subject talks about the ethics of human research, as well as pointing out that a book due out in 2010 is probably already written."

[info]shaggirl (who pimped the survey on crack_van) pimps on her personal journal here with some oh-so-charming quotes from Ogas (thanks, [info]lady_ganesh!).

ETA4: [info]shaggirl defends Ogi and Sai and will continue to let them use crack_van to promote their survey if that's what they want. She also defends her decision to pimp it on the comm: "I spend an average of 10-12 hours per month maintaining the comm, and have done for the past 6+ years. It is a labor of love, not because I get a great deal out of it personally (since the first few months of its existence I could count the number of fics I've read off it on two hands with fingers to spare), but because I wish to give something nice to fandom. If once every few years I feel like taking a little something back, by promoting something of interest to myself and fandom, then I am not going to apologize for that."
(I tried to summarize it, but it's wanky enough on its own. She at least admits it's wanky, though.)

ETA5: [info]fridgepunk has written Ogi Ogas/Sai Gaddam and posted it here (in Ogas's journal). Insert Rule 34 joke here.

ETA6: Ogas continues to prove himself to be mind-numbingly stupid with such gems as:

"Well, slash is kind of the female equivalent of the straight male interest in transsexuals." (full thread here)

And this thread, with moar fail. Pro: he apologizes for using the word "tranny." Con: he says he thought it was okay for him to use it because it's "the term they use for themselves."

He also, curiously, continues to evade the question "Do you have IRB approval for this?"

ETA7: [info]deadlychameleon called BU and found out that Ogas is not affiliated with the institution in any way and has been asked to stop using his BU website and email. (As Chameleon notes, though, this also means that their "research" has no supervision.) (thank you, [info]lydiabell!)

Meanwhile, Ogas has posted in his journal yet again with the subject line How is straight female interest in slash fiction like straight male interest in "shemales"? And why in the world does this matter? He's even included stuff from the Wikipedia article! (Except for the part where it notes that "shemale" is an offensive word "in LGBT communities" and "amongst transgender individuals" [quote marks because I lifted from Wikipedia directly]).

Comments so far include variations of "ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS!?" and macros.

ETA8: Ogi's journal has gone into lockdown. But he apparently is unfamiliar with another law of fandom: You can't escape the screencaps. (others here, here, here, and I am sure a whole lot of other places. If there are important caps that aren't covered in these links, let me know) (ETA8.5: More here. Thanks, [info]selene_avis!)

[info]shaggirl says "I was wrong" and provides further evidence that these guys are assholes.

ETA9: Ogas apologizes. Interpret as you see fit.

ETA10: Ogas bahleetes his journal. Whether or not Gaddam follows suit remains to be seen.

btw, as of today (September 6), FanHistory's page on Ogas is the fifth result in Google, a post from [info]jonquil is tenth, and this post is fourteenth. The post on Ogas's journal with the RPS fic is nineteenth (and accessible via Google Cache!). /random info gleaned by Googling.

As an asexual I found many of the questions to be completely meaningless.

I feel kinda awful for actually answering all the questions truthfully and without censorship now.

So they're trying to show a difference between men and women in terms of "romantic or erotic cognition"? I can just imagine what their results will be used for, and it overrides my logic circuits with RED ALERT! so not much beyond that's registering.

35. Do you use alcohol or illicit non-prescription drugs (e.g., marijuana) while reading fan fiction?

I'm definitely feeling the need to use while reading this survey.

I'm baffled by this one: 31. What specific fan fiction story would you most like to live out as one of its characters? (If possible, please provide the name of the story, fandom, and author.)

Aside from the hell no, creepizoid issue of naming the author, etc., I can't help answering, uh, none? Because the vast majority of the fanfic I read is not geared towards me showing up as a sparkly self-insert or a secondary character (who'd probably up being a redshirt of some kind), and I have no particular desire to feature as one of the main characters because I enjoy them as being different from me?

Okay, so maybe there was that one PWP where Ray and Fraser got it on together with an anonymous OFC. I would be okay with filling in for her. >_>

But in general, do they think all fic is Mary Suetastic self-inserts, or completely devoid of plot and conflict, or what?

Unless this survey is designed to sort male and female responses to see how many obvious trolls each one produces, I'm calling crappy survey design. Actually, since they're going looking for a result and designing around that, rather than designing and letting the data show or not show a result, I'm calling crappy research and wondering how the hell they got funding.

And I would not like to live in any particular fanfiction, one of the defining characteristics of my ideal mate is that he or she is not a fictional being, and this is pretty much the only website I use where my avatar is not a bunch of flowers or a planet.

My roommate took that survey earlier today. I may have hijacked the computer in the middle so I could insult the researchers' mothers after she read out some of the questions.

I love the question about the gender of the icon/avatar you use on LJ or LJ-type sites.

I TOTES USE A NAKED, DANCING DUDE WITH AN ELEPHANT-HEAD CENSOR BAR DOES THIS MEAN I LIKE TO PRESENT MYSELF AS A NAKED, DANCING DUDE WITH AN ELEPHANT-HEAD CENSOR BAR?

What about when I used a lobster as my default? I don't even know what sex that thing is, much less if it identifies as a particular gender:

Or or or what about LJ itself? For the last 4 years, I've used this shooting star icon as default, only I switched it out to a new, pink star a couple weeks ago.

I seem to have a 1:1:1 balance of guy:girl:huh? icons: what does it mean?!?!

It was always an evolutionary advantage for Neuroscientists to crave clear distinctions between women and men and now it's kind of hard-wired in their brains to create this kind of surveys. So, don't be too mad at them, they can't really help it.

It's interesting though how they're stubbornly typing the name of their dialog partner and signing their contributions, even when the very comment structure of the medium they're interacting in made it redundant to do so, and everyone around them adapted to the fact. Classic rigid behavior patterns.

Am I the only one mildly disturbed by the anti-science tone come out of some parts of fandom in this debate? (Including from some acafans?)

Yes, the attempt to figure out how the brain and the mind effect each other is always going to be tricky; in some ways it's like trying to see what you look like in the mirror with your eyes closed. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't *try*, and it doesn't mean we should dismiss entire disciplines out of hand because they're studying things we don't want to know about.

And yes, of *course* someone studying sexuality from a biological perspective is going to look at it completely differently than a queer studies professor from a liberal arts program. That's why we need them both.

I didn't know fandom came down on the side of "don't do science because we're afraid you might discover a fact that doesn't match our politics!" Rodney McKay would kick ya'll down the stairs. I personally would love to see some "why slash" from a bioscience perspective for once instead of a liberal arts one. Because I think science is a good tool, and I don't fear anything that tool used well will create. (Because fangirls are clearly biologically superior anyway, duh.)

(As for the crappy survey questions and the clear lack of proper preparation for interacting with this particular population - go after them all you want. Though I feel a bit sorry them. They've obvious ly never before encountered a study population who study themselves as hobby. I get the impression they've put similar studies into other communities and are completely bowled over at meta-fandom's reaction in comparison.)

I would be curious how they would supplement the surveys - they can't just be using self-reported (and selected) data, they'd have to have some sort of brain scan or some biological information to examine, and it seems unlikely they'd get any effective data by using brain scans or biological input that are not from the population they surveyed. Would the next step be for people who answered the survey to volunteer for some sort of MRI or something?

Anybody else slightly disturbed by the way they're apparently changing the survey as people are taking it? Surely that's not best research practice.

It is certainly our hypothesis that female-dominated populations will have different interests, different activities, and different responses to questions than male-dominated populations; it is these differences which will allow us to focus in on the operation of particular subcortical circuits.

Ah. Let's get this clear: they think fan fic will show there is a difference between female and male erotic cognition patterns, based on the assumption that it's mostly read by women, right?

But. I'm not a scientist, but in order to draw any conclusions about differences, I would think they will need a reliable data set of both men and women on that same subject. Otherwise they'll be stuck with nothing more than "this is what readers like about fan fic". And that makes fan fic no more useful to their research than, well, tentacle porn or something.

So that statement up there? Is circular reasoning, if I'm not mistaken.

RULE 34: WHAT NETPORN TEACHES US ABOUT THE BRAIN

So there's the title of the book.

And with all this talk about romance, I dearly want to see what the surveys to "other populations" look like.

Wow.

Reading through the open discussion post comments, and it turns out that Ogi had no idea that novel-length fic exists. Way to do some preliminary research before setting up the survey!

Not answering the survey, but wtf is up with #35? Do you use alcohol or illicit non-prescription drugs (e.g., marijuana) while reading fan fiction?

Sometimes I enjoy a glass of wine while I read fic as part of my unwinding-from-work ritual in the evenings. Does this count as "using" alcohol?

Other times, I prefer tea. In the mornings, I take my fic with coffee.

Clearly, fic leads to substance abuse.
