Marriage fail

There's several fails here, have we all got our bingo cards ready?

Even ignoring the blatantly ragey parts, the sheer amount of schmoop on the part of the article writer makes me queasy.

In short: The institution of marriage has always been between a man and a woman. Yes, there have been homosexual relationships. But no society that he knows of, in the history of the world, has ever condoned same-sex marriage. "Do they always agree on the number of partners? Do they always agree on the form of monogamy? No," Brown says, but they've all agreed on the gender issue. It's what's best for families, he says. It's the union that can biologically produce children, he says. It's all about the way things have always been done. He chose his new church, St. Catherine of Siena, because it still offers a Latin Mass. Other noted conservatives have been parishioners there; Antonin Scalia has worshiped at St. Catherine's.

Other than the appeal to tradition he's got going on, I feel like he's spouting some bad history, but I don't know enough right now to pinpoint where he's wrong. Like, I feel that there have been many cultures where two men or two women set up house and raised children together and were considered for all intents and purposes married, but I don't know enough to say where or when.

Oh denizens of JF, enlighten me?

My ideal follow-up: One of those "precocious and sweet" kids comes home with a significant other of the same gender, or better, has already eloped with significant other and now reveals marriage to parents.

The kids don't need Brian "walking in the door because he's another person. They need him because he's a man."

O_o

WTF?

My kids haven't had a "man" walking through any door in... Holy shit, 6 years? My daughter is in advanced classes in school. She reads in her spare time. She's learning, from a friend, how to put computers together from scratch. She's bright, beautiful, and takes care of her twin brother, and looks out for him.

My son has Downs, but he's smart, he's tenacious, he reads, he's empathetic, helpful, respectful, and worships his sister.

WTF do my kids need a man for?

I kind of loved this part:

Two Million for Marriage, the organization's push to rally online activists around the country, was similarly unfortunate: Apparently no one at NOM had realized that 2M4M, the hip-sounding tag they'd chosen for the initiative, is also the abbreviation favored by gay couples looking for a threesome.

(I don't want to read the article again to find where he says this, so I can't quote exactly, but...) Okay, so maybe same-sex marriages weren't common before the modern era. You know what else wasn't? Marrying for love.

Wonder if he married his wife just to gain her property or pass on his family name. Because if not, then he's going against tradition! And that would be terrible. Marriage must mean the same thing and work the same way in all possible places and times and never ever change or be (gasp) redefined.
