Stranger accused of slapping crying child in store

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. – Police say a 61-year-old man annoyed with a crying 2-year-old girl at a suburban Atlanta Walmart slapped the child several times after warning the toddler's mother to keep her quiet.

A police report says after the stranger hit the girl at least four times, he said: "See, I told you I would shut her up."

Roger Stephens of Stone Mountain is charged with felony cruelty to children. It was unclear if he had an attorney and a telephone call to his home Wednesday was unanswered.

Authorities say the girl and her mother were shopping Monday when the toddler began crying. The police report says Stephens approached the mother and said, "If you don't shut that baby up, I will shut her up for you."

Authorities say Stephens then grabbed the 2-year-old and slapped her. The child began screaming and Stephens was arrested. Police say an examination showed the girl's face was slightly red.

A call to the girl's mother, identified in the police report as Sonya Mathews of Grayson, was answered by a woman who identified herself as Sabrina Mathis, the victim's aunt.

Mathis said Wednesday that the girl is doing fine.

"As of today, she has really forgotten about it," Mathis said. "She's been playing."

Mathis said the girl's mother was shaken up over the incident.

"She's as well as to be expected," Mathis said. "Right now she's just trying to calm down."

Check out the guy's picture. He totally looks like someone who'd do something like this. Poor kid. Poor Mom!

When I first read about that story all I could think is that maybe that guy read the childfree comm a bit too often and was shocked when the bystanders failed to stand up and burst into applause. The sad truth of real life: smacking a child does not make you an internets hero, it makes you a dick.

I've had the urge to slap children before. But I won't, I must admit.

tl;dr story:

The closest I've come to hitting another person's child was when I was on a train going home from work, and this woman had her little 3 or 4 year old, who randomly came up to me and slapped me across the face, my first instinct was to backhand the little brat, because heh, it hurt, and I was a little surprised. But I did tell the child 'Do it again, and I'll hit you back and it will hurt' (I'm a big meanie, yes I know I know) and I think it was my tone that stopped the child more then anything, he knew that this wasn't an adult to mess with, but the worst thing, the mother didn't do anything, she thought it was funny.

If looks could kill, mother would be dead.

But, I wouldn't do what this guy did.

A stranger tries that with my child, I'm going to be finding out if those lessons in Aikijitsu were any good after all.

And he may be finding himself with a wrist too broken to slap with.

Wow. What a jerk.

Full disclosure, I have shouted 'Shut 'em up or take 'em out!' in movie theaters, but slapping another person's child? No, just no. I really, really hope this guy does not have a wife, children or pets. If he'll do this in public, what is he doing behind closed doors?

Oh lord. If someone else's child is crying in a shop you either deal, or leave, or make entertaining faces at them from a distance for distraction purposes. You don't slap other people's children!

I do occasionally detach other people's children from shop shelving units, but that's more a 'oh god, they're going to kill themselves, I'll take the yelling over blood' thing.

Y'know, a two-year-old is very limited in its means of expressing displeasure. It can't quite articulate yet that it's bored or tired or hungry or that it's about to fill its pants. Yeah, it's annoying; yeah, mommy should probably take the kid some place private to deal with it.

Sixty-one-year-old man should've known better fifty-nine fucking years ago.

This reminds me so much of something I saw at the zoo back in Sioux Falls when I was in my early teens. My mom and I had gone through some part of the zoo that was a little more enclosed and had animals you could get right close to and feed. This little girl walked up to her dad and asked him for a quarter to get some dried corn to feed a bird of some kind. He said no. She whined a little - not even a lot, just a little. And he fucking slapped her in the face. In front of a crowd of people. She couldn't have been more than 8, poor thing.

Now most people were like "*whistles, looks around, doesn't do anything or say anything*" After my mother was assured that I wasn't going to be sending my scrawny 13-year-old self flying at that father with my own fists (because I would have, I really would have) and let go of me, I marched up to a zookeeper, who in turn called security.

I never did find out what happened.

I just saw that on the news and I am still in wtf mode. Who the hell slaps a child? I sometimes work in the children's department of a bookstore, surrounded by parents with screaming children. I manage to deal with it all day long, and the two times I have touched someone's child (not counting the ones I have to detach from my leg when I get glomped by munchkins or held hands while we went on a mommy-search) were times when the kid was in imminent danger of hurting itself - and even then I felt kinda skeevy.

My first question was: Was the child black? Terrible to think, huh?

That being said: My son functions on a 2yo level. He's 9, but cognitively and emotionally, he's still 2. He's getting better, but he's not there yet.

Last night, we were in Wal-Mart, late, and he's used to being in bed at 8.30 sharp. We were just checking out. This very nice lady in front of us, about 9 months pregnant, despite only having milk and a couple small items, let us go past, despite my FULL cart and let us check out.

While I was putting things on the belt, and keeping an eye on my son, she stood there and engaged him in conversation and he was giggling while I busted ass to not keep her waiting.

/good story to combat the bad.

Dear lady at WalMart in West Chester Ohio: You are going to be an AWESOME mom to that baby of yours. I wish you all the best.
