Naked photos get teens in trouble

Apparently it's now trendy for teens to send nude photos to one another, to the point where it's starting to affect investigations into cases of actual exploited children.

I'd like to say I'm surprised, but I'm really not, which is sad.

That article was surprisingly un-histrionic. So much stuff involving teens and sex has this edge of barely contained "OH NOES TEH CHILDRUN ARE THINKING ABOUT SEX!!1!"; it's nice to see an article that is low on the handwringing, and more about how neither teen sexuality nor technology are Teh Evil, but that technology means that teens' normal stupid crap gets a much wider distribution than it otherwise would. Though that idiot quoted whining about "sluts" was made of FAIL.

Well, the person quoted was 15 years old. It's probably "good kid smugness" working there.

But yeah, the first time I heard about this, the newscasters were basically having "the moral panic hour" so the article was pretty good overall.

Reminds me of that 13 year old girl a few days ago who had sex with a guy who went to jail on statutory rape. She told him she was a 19-year old divorcee.

The sad part is, this was the second time she's done this, and her parents say she still goes out late.

So I like how he went to her father because he was worried she was lying and the father called the police...but they're apparantly not trying to reign in their daughter at all?

Well yeah that too. Although I'm surprised he even did, you know? After being worried that she might be underage I thought he would've just gotten bailed and ran. Not went to ask the father just in case.

Er that's supposed to be bailed and ran, as in dropped her ass and jetted off. Not gotten off on bail and then run, cause that's stupid.

Found a picture of her, and I can definitely see where she can be mistaken for someone who's of age. Which makes me wonder: Why isn't she being prosecuted for something as well? Or at least her father?

I'm not saying throw her in jail or fine her or anything, but the girl could use a slap on the wrist and maybe some community service to get the message across that her dad is neglecting to give.

I'd like to know why the welfare people aren't looking into this, though.

Oh my gosh yeah. This is such an obvious case of neglect it's ridiculous.

Seriously, WTF. She's not even sneaking out - he just lets her stay out all night. But he bothers to press charges against the guy who admitted to sleeping with her, because even though it's kind of creepy he at least felt guilty enough to come to him and say something.

Something is seriously fucked up if you're presenting yourself as a 19-year-old divorcée and sleeping with twenty-somethings at 12/13.

Gah. It's horrible the pictures taken fell into other people's hands and got posted publicly on the Internet.

Did the teens who did this have anyone tell them it was a bad idea? I mean, anyone in their peer group? (Obviously their parents would have). I would never have done this even when I was in high school, 'cause I'm a big prude, but I like to think I wouldn't have let one of my friends do it without saying, "Um, that's kind of stupid. You know this, right?"

[info]queencallipygos

I used to frequent a bbs with a lot of teenage girls. Somehow, the perception they had when it came to posting things on the Internet was that they were doing so to share with their peer group only, and people who weren't in that group or weren't being otherwise directly addressed should be polite enough not to look.

I had to explain over and over that "honey, the Internet just plain doesn't work that way."

Ouch. I've encountered the perception that no one would really care enough to look at pictures of naked strangers they don't know (ha ha), but not the one you mention. It sounds like even people who have grown up with the technology still have outdated assumptions.

There's also a lot of ignorance about exactly what people can do with search engines. I used to have a standard warning against "posting personal information about yourself" on this BBS: if I saw someone who had their full name listed in their profile, and mentioned a town either in the profile or in their posts, I'd publically post to them saying, "In five minutes from now, I'll prove to you that you need to take down some of that info," and then I'd go on Google and find as much info about them as I could, and put it into an email to them -- usually with a photo of them cheerleading or something that I'd gotten off their school's website.

Usually I'd initially get some incensed accusations for "snooping," but I'd then explain exactly how I got that info and ask them if they'd considered whether anyone else could do the same thing, if it was that easy. Many of them quietly changed their info shortly thereafter.

The only place I find both is a random site and I say I'm six years older than I really am. (This was when I was in my young teens, so obviously I lied.)

The best part?

I remember pretending I had a lover on that site. It was some kid from school that I had a crush on.

I was 12.

the perception that no one would really care enough to look at pictures of naked strangers they don't know

Aha. Hahaha. Ha. People actually think that? I've always (always, since I first hopped on the internets as a thirteen-year-old) gone with the decision that I don't post anything anywhere that I'm ashamed of in real life: writings, drawings, opinions, whatever. (That's not to say that I link my parents to everything I do. There's a difference between "shame" and "I really don't want to get into an argument with them over religion or politics.")

Really? That is so weird and naive, which is actually kind of comforting. They ARE kids. But what irks me is that I see a lot of them trying very hard to look sultry/sexual/cool/etc. The endlessly posed self portraits in skimpy clothing--that you know the kid took 100 versions of just to get the right snapshot -- those weird me out. I could yammer on about media and corporate images of beauty, but whatever.

I think many of them are so fixated on controlling how other people see them that they get confused when the image actually comes across as great big slut to people they really don't want looking at them at all. Of course a lot of people get any attention mixed up with positive attention too.

One blog recently got material leaked from a corporation by a FTP. One of the commenters said that it was the company's fault for not having better FTP security. Now if it had been confidential credit info instead of some unreleased promotional materials, I'm fairly certain that commenter would still blame the company.

Seriously. Digital cameras are a lot easier to use, but the massive benefit of hardcopy photos is that no one can magically peer at them while they're in your bedroom drawer. Unless they have x-ray vision, but that'd be a moot point.

You know, I'm only 23 and yet this make me feel old. Maybe it's because we didn't have cameraphones in my day or because MySpace wasn't big, but I distinctly recall a lack of people sharing nekkid pictures at my high school.

But then, I've also been online for like 13 years and knew from the start that sharing personal info online = BAD IDEA, so I could just be sheltered.

I'm seeing multiple advertisements on TV that basically boil down to 'Don't be stupid, if you put it on the internet, everyone will see it'.

They kinda fail. One focused on the concept of 'naughty pictures' and the picture was a normally clothed girl laying down. Buh? Couldn't get a young looking adult to at least do a bikini shot to put the message through?

I love TV news stories about the HORRIBLE NEW TREND YOUR TEENAGER MIGHT BE PARTAKING IN RIGHT NOWWW!

Half the time, actually, probably more like 3/4 of the time, "trend" turns out to mean "thing that has happened once in two or three different high schools around the nation for a grand total of two or three incidents."

Right before I left high school, the TV news folks started making a big deal about plastic bracelets actually being SEEKRIT TEENAGE CODE for what sex acts you were willing to perform. And, if somebody snapped one off you, you OMG TOTALLY had to perform that act on them.

*facepalm*

Needless to say, the plastic bracelets became the sarcastic joke of the week. I think about 8 people still owe me buttsex. Maybe at the 10-year reunion.
