From DisabilityScoops: Groups Outraged Over Video Released by Autism Speaks

The video in question is in the post. What do you think? Personally, I found the first half of the video pretty stigmatizing/fear-based and the comments kinda rage inducing (couldn't help but notice it was almost all parents speaking for their children... almost no one with autism).

ETA:
Autism Speaks has apparently pulled the video due to controversy and a pretty good deconstruction of the claims the video makes, from a woman with Autism, here.

Autism Speaks is very fail in this regard. For more information, google "Autism Speaks don't speak for me".

They're also responsible for those "holding your child ransom" billboard ads from last year.

I will do that!

"Holding your child ransom"? That sounds... classy.

And, I should note, not all of them by a long shot.

(Sorry, for some reason comments are screened on this and I can't reply to myself.)

I especially like it when people dismiss the words of the high functioning autistics because 'well, you're high functioning.' I mean, I know that different levels of function are very different and construe different challenges, but 'stfu, you're not disabled enough for me to believe you' is not fucking on.

Yeah, it's like... doesn't "high functioning" just mean that there are fewer obvious symptoms and/or co-morbid disorders, and as a result, the person is better able to manage what symptoms there are, so they seem less severe - not just that the symptoms overall are less severe (which can also be the case)?

I always feel really guilty when I'm faced with shit like Autism Speaks spread, because I identify as autistic, but I can mostly cope with day-to-day life and I appear to be somewhat successful, as I graduated from university and I have held a job. And I don't appreciate the guilt trips, because it's totally invalidating the fact that, no, actually, I am disabled and have to struggle daily to do those things that everyone else seems to think are normal. My disabilities may be invisible, but they're still disabling.

So, uhm, yeah, AutismSpeaks are douchebags and they need to get responsible and use the money they've been donated to actually help autistic people rather than using it to line their pockets or spread fear and hatred.

It's the hierarchy of disability shit, but on its head.

Arg, this is something that makes me so angry, and now I get to go give a 2 minute speech about sexual abuse of women with disabilities.

Hey, wanna feel like hating reality?

If not, don't read the rest of this comment.

90% of people with intellectual disabilities experience some form of sexual abuse or rape. 90%. And 67% of the people who abuse them find them through being employed to aid them.

People also do this to depressives, like me. I still remember my psychiatrist cousin telling my grandmother that I "don't act like a typical depressive" while I was sleeping in the other room THANKS TO BEING DEPRESSED.

Yeah still pissed about that shit.

Honestly, I have Asperger's, but I'm not offended.

Autism is a disability, it needs to be fought, you can fight the disease without hating the people who have it. The first half overstates its case, but I think the reaction to it is somewhat of the over- nature.

But it's not a disease? I don't know, but "disease" connotes a lot of things which autism isn't. It's a disability, yes, and a neurological difference, but I really don't think you can call it a "disease", and likening it to cancer or AIDS seems awfully disingenuous, especially since those actively kill children, whereas autism...doesn't.

Also, the idea that austistic people can't do anything for themselves; their families have to do it for them. And the implication that there is never anything positive in their lives. And that they are ruining the lives of their families.

I could go on and on but I'll stop there.

Somewhat related, New study shows that autism in adults is just as common as autism in children. This possibly debunks the whole 'autism explosion' thing, as well as the vaccine hypothesis, after all, most people in their 70s weren't vaccinated as kids. More study needs to be done of course.

Debunks the vaccine hypothesis and lends credence to the fact that it just wasn't diagnosed very well before. Which, you know, is the hypothesis I've subscribed to for years.

Ugh, stuff like this just makes me rage. I'm autistic, and it pisses me off to know that Autism Speaks and the like are the voice people hear, the loudest group claiming to speak for me and other autistic people. It's an absolutely messed up situation.
