This is *very* unfunny.
You are forewarned.

Murderer of Dr. George Tiller has supporters planning an online auction to raise money for his defense.

Supporters of Roeder, the man accused of murdering abortion provider George Tiller, say they're planning an online auction to raise money for his defense, Judy Thomas reports. (It's not clear if it'll actually happen -- eBay has a policy that should bar this sort of thing from happening.) Among the items to be auctioned: an Army of God manual for disrupting abortion clinics, drawings from Roeder himself and a prison cookbook compiled by the woman who shot and wounded Tiller back in 1993.

Leaving my opinion out of this, but hopefully no one here actually believes that killing doctors is somehow justifiable.

Also, Law & Order episode to be based on the death of Dr. Tiller.

That Law and Order episode made me want to throw things. For those of you that didn't see it, rather than having his stand in be the upstanding doctor that he was, they had him botch an abortion so that it ended in a live baby, and then at the behest of the mother, kill it by stabbing it in the head with a scissor.

They also had some of the pro-choice witnesses go crazy on the stand, just so that it wouldn't be too biased against the pro-lifers.

Oh, that just infuriates me -- I know people who worked with him. I can just imagine everyone watching the episode thinking such shenanigans were tamed down, too, rather than made up from whole cloth.

It's ridiculously offensive to his memory to be pulling that barely four months after this assassination.

I shouldn't be too surprised, considering what they did with the Valerie Plame case, but this still pisses me off.

They switched the party allegiances around and pretty heavily altered all personalities involved, so we ended up with the Purity Sue daughter of a Republican senator being outed by a Democrat who was just shy of being Satan himself.

Ok, that suprises me. Usually SVU is very pro-choice...

(Of course, I might be uninformed, as most of the cases they rip from the headlines aren't that well known in Mexico)

This wasn't SVU, it was original L&O. It wasn't overall anti-choice, but some of their choices to sensationalize it were, uh, fucking bullshit.

OH! Then I can understand it better. Even not knowing the original cases, it's obvious that L&O tends to pull a lot of incomprehensible situations (See, the scientology episode)

You should be able to join by messaging one of the mods if there isn't a "click this link to send a request" thing on the comm's profile page. AFAIK they accept most people who want to join, but the closed membership is because of wanting to avoid trolls and also something to do with the 2008 US election and wanting to avoid trouble from the very people the posts are about.

And they're closed on Sunday!

Check the comment I just posted in response to [info]fern_on_fen for some links. I recommend reading [info]dogemperor's journals over at DailyKos, though he posts more at other sites lately, as he's working with folks on research and the like for a book. (It was leaked that the guy who runs the Military Religious Freedom Association, I think it's called? was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize for 2010, and in the press release, the book was mentioned, along with [info]dogemperor's pseudonym with regards to the research.)

I recommend reading the entire "Parallel Economy" series that [info]dogemperor posted to DailyKos a couple years ago. It's pretty crazy.

Anyway, story shorter, Hobby Lobby is owned by Dominionist groups and their profits are used to help fund right-wing religious shit. Remember the Jesus Camp documentary? Or Sarah Palin's church (and the witch-hunter who "anointed" her)? That's the kind of stuff that they give money to, because the owner is part of the Third Wave movement. Plus, they've done some pretty despicable stuff towards employees and they have had no qualms in the past about discriminating against people who aren't whitebread and Christian (at least, when it comes to employees).

By the way, Chik-Fil-A is a similar company, though I haven't heard of as much discrimination from them, though the managers are apparently encouraged to be Christian and to convert employees who aren't. (Not in all locations, though.)

So good of him, really. -.-

But, yeah, seeing your comment, I realized that I wasn't clear. When I said "I haven't heard of as much discrimination", I should've emphasized the as much, but that's still miles away more than what I've heard of from companies that aren't run by people like this.

It'd be pretty horrible if that's true. I wouldn't have expected that, because I was under the impression that even the Dominionists think Phelps is wackaloon, even if they secretly agree with what he says. (Or, I guess, what I'm saying is they don't agree with how outspoken and antagonistic he is? or so I thought)

I'm pretty sure it's just rumor. Dominionists aren't keen on the Phelps'. They both hate Teh Ghey, but Dominionists tend to toe the "we can fix the gay right outta ya" attitude while WBC is... well, you know. The Greens also take great pains to hide who they finance, and I doubt that they'd even try to support WBC if they're that scared of the public finding out what they do. They're already forever linked with the whole Oral Roberts University thing.

... oh man. I had friends who I lost track of about ten years ago who were devote Amway types. They tried to bring me into it but I couldn't get into it. I just had this ... I dunno, they made the hair on the back of my neck stand on end. I went to some of their conventions and just saw the way they did things and backed away slowly.

Then I ran. Haven't seen or talked to them in years. They were in Yeager's line.

I'm from Kansas, and though I hope this doesn't sound too self-centered, I just have to say that Tiller's murder absolutely broke my heart. Also, they caught the bastard outside of my hometown because that stretch of the highway is, like, perfect for cops to hide out on or something. Small comfort, I know.

Also, come on, L&O. I love ya, and this may just be my bias showing, but whyyyy did you have to sensationalize this case? :( :( :( (Although I've heard that two characters on the show mention in that episode how adamantly pro-choice they are, and they're my two favorite characters already, so. Yeah.) Then again, I suppose L&O shouldn't be taken to fully represent actual cases in the first place.

You know, L&O did at one point have an ep that was pretty pro-choice, or at least stuck it to some lady who had bombed an abortion clinic and killed a young pregnant girl.

This is why this ep disturbs me so. D: Did they hire some conservative writer?

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]sandglass
2009-10-27 05:19 am UTC (link)
L&O is generally pretty even, as far as I can remember. They've got both sides better arguments: the government has no right to legislate women's bodies, and some pregnancies are just bad, matched with the fact that privacy wasn't in the Constitution so it's not really a right that Roe v. Wade should be based on. It's pretty easy to make a balanced episode based around abortion. This? Not so fucking much.

Dunno if anyone else posted this or not, but eBay says "No way" to the auctions to raise money.

If the items were posted, eBay said it would remove them from the online marketplace site because the company "does not allow listings that promote or glorify violence, hate, racial or religious intolerance.

"We do not allow items that encourage, promote or instruct others to engage in illegal activity and will not be a platform for those who promote violence toward others," the company statement said.
