I can't quite decide if this is funny or not.
K2, a new legal dru-- herbal suppliment that apparently has qualities like marijuana, is announced in the local paper..

The comments are actually what you want to read this time, they range from amused and joking to totally outraged and everything between. Mostly over the fact that the article not only tells you the name of the store that is selling K2, but also gives you *the address*.

A responsible shop keeper would pull this off the shelves. Dr. Drew says most pot smokers have bipolar disorder. I wonder if a study has ever been done on suicide rates of potheads. I also wonder if government grant money went into it since it comes from a profesor and his student that created two synthetic cannabinoids at Clemson University.

Hey!

There's this new stuff called alcohol. And, get this, you can buy it all over this town.

Thousands of people kill others in car wrecks, or other incidents, every year after drinking it. Lots more just die from a lifetime, or less, of drinking it. Hundreds of underage people in this town buy it every day.

so let's not panic!!!

whew, at first I thought K2 was a new early childhood education program, that progressive Lawrence was going to start up, thank goodness it's about drugs, something that isn't new to Lawrence. Will it interact with Viagra and Aricept?

I'm intrigued, actually.

Theoretically, if it is legal, but offers the same relief that marijuana does, it might genuinely benefit people who have gone to marijuana because nothing else helps. If it's not a 'pick it up off the shelves and buy it' drug, I doubt we're going to have towns full of stoners.

...though yeah, giving the name and address of the store might have been a bad plan.

Yeah, but the risk is of course that the federal government then decides it's a problem, and boom, the cycle begins again.

Federal government doesn't give a damn if a drug has actual medicinal purposes. I mean, just look at ecstasy.

Lawrence is my home town, and it's a college town, so unless things have radically changed since I left 10 years ago, there wasn't really a shortage of stoners there even before K2.

Heiman also has concerns that the high cost of the substance – which comes in a variety of flavors and potencies – will lead to more crime for those wanting to purchase it.

Exactly like iPods, brand-name sneakers, sports bikes, skateboards, really fancy cell phones, bomber jackets, anything else considered "cool" by the youth of today... I mean god, you could buy a whole 1 2/3 packs of cigarettes with dough like that. It's madness, I tell you, MADNESS!

And she sees the same potential issues with K2 as she sees with marijuana: negative health effects, impaired driving, poor decision-making and drug dependency.

"I don't like it so I'm making shit up about a 'relatively unstudied' product to scare people away from buying it or being okay with anyone else who buys or uses it."

(Also, drug dependency? Really??? Damn dangerous, that is.)

Erickson said that the potential problems with K2 have Johnson County officials planning a proposal for a change at the state legislative level that would make K2 illegal.

Because god forbid anyone make choices about what substances to put into their own bodies.

I love how this article fails to specify exactly what it is other than "MARIJUANAAAAAAAAA kinda SO YOU SHOULD FEAR AND HATE IT, FOR IT DESTROYS LIVES AND IMPREGNANATES UR BEBEHS!!!"

Also, I just love it when news is based on verifiable facts and hard science and is not in any way shape or form a biased Initiate Public Outrage button being gleefully jabbed over and over and over by agenda-having douchebuckets acting like 3-year-olds waiting for an elevator. Yessiree. What a totally great article!

Article didn't even address the question I have: Does using it as a supplement (instead of smoking it) also produce marijuana-like effects? Some people don't want to be stoners...

Or the one I have-- will it show up on a drug screening panel? I have chronic pain and I'd gladly try it, except that I'm routinely screened and do NOT want to lose my percocet over it.

From those I know who smoke it for this reason, it does not show up on screenings. Because it is greenery sprayed with JWH-018 (a syn THC chemical) it breaks down differently in the urine.
