The name says girl, but the costume says woman!
Everyone knows about Power Girl and her infamous boob window, right?

Prepare the mansplanation!

Power Girl's boobs throughout the ages.

Obligatory Jezebel link, with some more comments.

Ah, the ugly, retching smell of mansplaining in the morning.

The comments are, as usual, a reason why our planet wouldn't show up on the "Planets with intelligent life" list.

Here in San Francisco, when the weather is warm the T&A comes out IN FORCE. It seems to me that 80 degrees Farenheit triggers the must-show-of-my-tits response in many young women.

Well, gee. It almost seems like they're people, and don't want a lot of extra clothes making them hotter when they're already hot. Nah, it must be the desire to show random jackasses their tits.

But y'know, I'm willing to bet that if these women skydived, they'd put on a full outfit, 'cause hey WIND. Don't a lot of superheroines fly? I'm just sayin'.

But of course all the men walking around with their shirts off, they're just warm. They're not showing off, y'know, it's all about comfort. Not like those horrible wimmens who only want to show off their boobs.

When the weather is hot, layers tend to exacerbate the condition. The nubbiness of cloth in areas that tend to be sweat reservoirs doesn't help either.

Now, if there's some efficient alternate method for womenfolk to get around in such weather--without giving the PLEASE LOOK AT MY TITS impression by virtue of trying to stay cool while in possession of breasts--I would like to hear it.

"Male comics characters are just as sexualized!" always makes me want to bang my head against the wall. How can you possibly even read superhero comics and not notice the huge, huge disparity in the costumes and what they cover? When, oh, 95% of superheroines (and supervillainesses, for that matter) are wearing full-body costumes that don't expose any skin below the neck, then maybe we can move on to discussing whether the unrealistic male body images are equivalent to the unrealistic female body images, but until that time just SHUT UP about this, guys.

Nightwing versus Huntress's glorified G-string, for example.

I always liked Powergirl's explanation that she used her costume as a dsitraction. I believe at one point she said that the peek-a-boo window was why she never had to bother with a mask.:) It doesn't make the costume any less blatant fan service, but at least the fan service is addressed in-universe, you know? And I know I've seen other characters boggle that she's going out superheroing dressed like that.

I think one of the problems artists have with her is that she's one of the few female heroes drawn with a good amount of muscle tone. I think some artists are afraid that will make her look too butch and so they go overboard with her tracts of land to compensate.

Although I guarantee that if the male superheroes decided to cut away the part of their costumes over their nipples, that would serve plenty well as a distraction too.

I mean, not even appealingly. I'm pretty sure that with anyone, that would get at least a split second "Bwuh?" reaction. Just enough time to throw a haymaker punch.

The snarky part of my brain would like to see all the male superheroes in a given universe go nearly-naked for a few months, just to see fanboy brains do an impression from the movie Scanners.

Come on! Superman doesn't need clothes -- his skin is bulletproof. There's no story-related reason that Superman should be fully dressed. And you boys are always complaining about how there are no girls reading comics -- don't you want more girls reading comics?

(On the other hand, why stop there? If Superman dressing up like a stripper didn't make heads explode, Naked Justice certainly would.)

Now that's sort of an interesting turnabout. For what I can see, all of the male heroes are almost completely naked (Because most have at least boots or gloves) and all the female heroes in the story get to wear full body clothes... albeit still in the same low cut/almost swimsuit clothes that we get in superhero comics....

And I bet they would say "it's worse" because it's the male heroes the ones that get that treatment.

OMFG. All of the bits in Queer as Folk about the comic book Michael and Justin made--I'm seeing it all in a completely new light. I did not know that this existed. But the writers for QaF obviously did. Damn, I wish I knew about this when I was watching!

Oh, this is fun in Marvel fandom. "Namor goes around in a speedo! Therefore, it's equal!"

As compared to Ms. Marvel, Moondragon, Tigra, some of Storm's costumes, Scarlet Witch, Silverclaw, the list goes on.... And actually, Namor hasn't worn that speedo so much lately. They gave him a bodysuit. Which makes the rest of them even more obvious. Probably the only comparable male hero now is Hercules, who's still rocking the skirt/loincloth look.

Even the robots aren't safe. Visions I and II consistently wear clothes, with the basis that they have a human shape. Jocasta? More robotic in the sense that she looks metal, but she also has a human shape and apparently is capable of relationships, and wears jack shit. The one time she did take a form that had 'clothing', she was back to her original body by the next issue.

Dress up male superheros in their female counterpart's or romantic interest's outfits. Supes would totally rock that miniskirt and midriff-baring shirt, y/y? And I could totally go for Spidey in a Black Cat outfit or something~
