Ohio science teacher burned cross on kids' arms
A Mount Vernon teacher undermined science instruction in the public school district by discrediting evolution in his classroom and focusing on creationism and intelligent design, a probe has found.

Eighth-graders who were taught by John Freshwater frequently had to be re-taught in high school what they were supposed to have learned in Freshwater’s class, according to outside investigators hired by the district.

For 11 years, other teachers in the school district and people in the community complained about Freshwater preaching his Christian beliefs in class and slamming scientific theories, a school administrator told investigators.

“There is a significant amount of evidence that Mr. Freshwater’s teachings regarding subjects related to evolution were not consistent with the curriculum of the Mount Vernon City Schools and state standards,” the consultants reported.

The report confirms that Freshwater burned crosses onto students’ arms, using an electrostatic device, in December. Freshwater told investigators the marks were Xs, not crosses. But all of the students interviewed in the investigation reported being branded with crosses. The investigation report includes a photo of one student’s arm with a long vertical line and a short horizontal line running through it.

The family of one student who was burned filed a federal lawsuit last week against Freshwater and the district, saying the student’s civil rights were violated.

Today, the family’s attorney, Jessica Philemond, said it was unfortunate that the school district didn’t do anything sooner to stop Freshwater.

“These concerns had been going on for at least 11 years and the school had not done anything,” she said.

A teacher who worked in Freshwater’s classroom last year also reported to investigators that Freshwater told his class that homosexuality is a sin.

Edit: More on this, thanks to [info]notjo: Mr. Freshwater used the BD-10A High Frequency Generator, the tip of which can put out up to 50,000 volts, on the skin of several of his eighth grade students.

I need a drink.

What?

I'm sorry... WHAT?

He's been burning marks onto students' and he thinks quibbling over whether it's a cross or an X is really a defense?

I think I need to go lay down for awhile.

I...I... Augh. I think out of pure panic reflex, I would have punched him if he'd done it to me. Burning + skin = psychotic sobbing breakdown that only spiders and needles can top.

Dear god, what?

I feel some days like I went to the only sane* Catholic school in existence. My religion teacher taught us about contraception (considering we'd had to pass biology the previous year, he skipped much of that, but we learned about contraception in that class too). Our teachers taught us science, evolution, etc, though we did learn about other things (mostly comparative analysis of stuff like 'Originally there were two schools of thought about the continuity of matter').

/towels off

Sorry.

*One of my teachers was kind of nuts, and threw a desk at a student, but he got fired right afterwards.

“With the exception of the cross-burning episode … I believe John Freshwater is teaching the values of the parents in the Mount Vernon school district,’’ he said.

Any sentence that begins "with the exception of the cross-burning episode" is not going to be an effective defense.

This is AMAZING.

There's more here:

The above device is the BD-10A High Frequency Generator. It is used in science classrooms to ionize contained gases to make them an identifiable color (a really fun lab in normal situations). The tip of this device can put out up to 50,000 volts. There is a warning on the product that says “Never touch or come in contact with the high voltage output of this device”. Which would seem like obvious advice.

Mr. Freshwater, however, decided to apply the device to the skin of several of his eighth grade students. He asked for classroom volunteers who wanted to see how the device worked. Without warning the children that it was going to be used on them and be painful, he pressed it to their skin and left a painful welt behind. A mother complained to the school after her son’s welt kept him awake all night in pain. Another parent complained about their child’s injury. The school’s principal had a word with Freshwater, telling him to lock up or remove the device and asked him to stop using it on students. The principal wrote a letter saying that Freshwater had been warned but said it would stay out of the teacher’s file if he refrained from using the Generator on any more students.

O.O

WHERE DO THESE PEOPLE COME FROM?

You know, what really perplexes me is that after the teacher burned the first cross into a kid, apparently he was able to convince others to submit to the same thing.

Burns hurt like fucking torture, and that cross isn't small.

Intelligence seems to be rather on the short side all the way around.

See, this is why I don't even try anymore to argue that Ohio isn't full of crazy hicks. The only thing surprising to me is that it happened so far east. Most of the really weird Ohioans congregate in the southwestern part of the state.

The headline of the article reads Report: Science teacher mixed religion, class.

Um. How about, Report: Science Teacher Commits Abuse, Burns Crosses into Students' Arms? Isn't that MORE TO THE POINT???

I'm not wild about mixing religion and science class, either. But that headline makes it sound like he was merely teaching creationism or something. Bad enough, but a whole other level from what he was actually doing.
