You know what we should do? Make it okay to bully queer students
C&P:

Matt Windschitl and Jason Schultz, two Iowa lawmakers, have proposed a bill to explicitly remove gay and lesbian students from anti-bullying policies in state schools.

Gay and lesbian teens are currently protected by the state’s Safe Schools Act, which aims to help students who are being bullied and harassed by ensuring a safe and non-judgmental environment to report incidents. Unacceptable, according to Schultz, who said that he has nothing against gay students, but added that he needs to remove their protections because it will lead to same-sex marriage.

Yes, you read that right. Windschitl and Schultz want to remove anti-bullying measures for gay students—one of the most vulnerable and harassed minorities—from public schools because he opposes an unrelated issue, same-sex marriage. It’s a destructive message for already bullied students, for whom these lawmakers not only have no empathy, but outright disdain.

And the excuse… It spells things out pretty clearly, doesn’t it?

I’ve pointed out many times that the lawmakers and lobbyists behind the movement to ban same-sex marriage don’t typically oppose gay weddings—they dislike gay people period. Maybe they think we’re just indulging in some personal fetish; maybe they think we’re sick in the head; whatever their misconception, one thing is clear: They aim to discriminate against all gay people at the level of the law. Once they ensure that gay people do not have the same legal rights to marriage as straights, they will move to restrict other rights and freedoms. The right to safe schools is just the start.

You can help stop it, not only by contacting Jason Schultz and Matt Windschitl, but by standing up for equal rights everywhere. Apathy is not an appropriate reaction when this is the level that opponents sink to.

"Nothing against gay students" my entire ass.

Why the fuck would anyone want to do this to kids? What possible reason could they have that doesn't boil down to "because I just hate gay people?"

WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS.

C'mon, guys: if the gay students are protected, they're going to think that it's okay to be gay. Panic in the streets! Catastrophe! Then they're going to fall in love and think that they've got the right to spend the rest of their lives with that person! And all because they didn't have the gay beaten out of them in school! It's for the good of SOCIETY.

*headdesk* I guess what REALLY gets me is that they want to remove the proviso. Not protest adding it. It's there, and they actively want it gone. WTF? Who stands up and says, basically, "I endorse bullying!"? Is that ever a viable political move?

It probably took an act of God (O SEE WHAT I DID THAR?) to get that provision added into the school's bullying policy to begin with. LEAVE IT THERE, YOU #(*&)@$(*#&$...!

I don't understand the way people like this operate.

I watched gay kids at my high school get the shit beat out of them, while the administration did nothing. I have a friend who failed out of school because it was easier than going to class and getting tortured. (The principle's advice: "stop acting so different and the other kids will leave you alone.") This was 2004, in California.

It's already open season on gay kids in many places, and these fuckers want to do away with what little protection an anti-bullying policy provides? ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME.

My contempt cannot be texturally rendered. I'm seconds away from just mashing away at my keyboard in rage.

According to Schultz's bio, he's "an elder, a Sunday School Teacher, and is also one of two Sunday School Superintendents." If his church has any integrity or even just a true desire to communicate the Gospel, they will fire his ass until he repents. This guy exemplifies the true meaning of "anti-Christ," in that he is so utterly, 180 degrees away from the teachings or the heart of Jesus. The thought of him being in any position of authority or teaching (especially young, impressionable people) makes me want to vomit.

Uh, no. I'm pretty sure that what could lead to gay students eventually being in gay marriages is that GAY MARRIAGE IS NOW LEGAL IN IOWA.

For Iowa lawmakers, they REALLY need to get with the program.

Every so often, I read a story on here where my reaction is like...if I saw this on TV, I would roll my eyes and say 'that's a straw man villain, nobody would ever actually do that.' Like kicking puppies and stabbing nuns, it's that 'how does anyone think this is a GOOD IDEA'.

This would be one of those stories. You'd think, even the homophobes would realise 'hmm maybe this is one of those times when public opinion will not be with me'. I often see homophobes try to restructure it so THEY are the put-upon ones, which is totally infuriating but I see why they do it--looking like the little guy being stepped on by Big Evil Liberal Media seems to work really well on some people.

But what exactly is this supposed to accomplish, who is it supposed to win over? aaaaaaaargh.

Everybody else has already covered all the other stuff about this, so... what about kids who are being bullied for being gay but aren't, actually? Like, if a kid can "prove" s/he is straight and therefore not a threat to the ~sanctity of heterosexual marriage, does s/he get protection?

Ugh. I can't even. Just ugh.

*Sigh* You know why Christianity is losing people, guys? Because it's losing the Message. When people think "Christian" nowadays, they don't think, "People trying to be like Christ." They think, "People who are against X, Y and Z and are trying to get their opinions codified into law." If I were to work my will, Christian leaders would get their asses out of politics and into arenas where people genuinely need the love of Christ. I think if I could do that, people's perceptions of Christians would change drastically in a very short time.

Jesus was a popular guy when He walked the Earth. About the only people who didn't like Him were 1) religious leaders, and 2) politicians. There's a lesson in that.

Rep. Schultz admits the bill won't go anywhere, but that's not the point. He hopes it will renew the efforts to make same sex marriage illegal here in Iowa, and start a debate on the house floor sometime this session.

Well, gee, that makes it okay then!

He hopes it will renew the efforts to make same sex marriage illegal

Ah yes, it's really totally not about bullying gays. It's just about making sure we're forever second class citizens. Gotcha.

Homophobic bullying leads to gay sex! Ban homophobia!
