My grandparents lived in VA, so I've been there a lot. I met a lot of awesome people there, and it's absolutely gorgeous. Actually it seemed pretty liberal where my grandparents lived, certainly a lot better than the exurban strip-mall swamp I'm stuck in at the moment.

I've lived here since 1991, and my experiences are generally not so fortunate. The government is bugfuck nuts (Dominionist Republicans) or corrupt (local government will cut anywhere but management-- who cares if the schools are falling apart or the library is cutting hours as long as the head administrators get a raise, right? My local library branch has pared down to 11 staff members, five of whom are managers). And several of my neighbors are incredibly, loudly, overtly racist. Of the "harass POC who dare to park on the street" sort. The traffic vies with LA for worst in the country if you live near DC, which I do, and it's the home base of both Pat Robertson's church and Jerry Falwell's church.

Someday I will successfully sell my house and move to Maryland, which is unlikely to be much better, but at least I haven't built up 20 years of distaste for it.

At least you have a local branch. Know where New Canton, VA is. It's roughly an hour from any decent stores and half an hour from the woefully under-stocked Fluvanna Co. Library. They get crap funding and the only reason we get plowed out here is we live two blocks from the local ER. I miss Loudoun Co. At least that was close enough to DC and Maryland to be tolerable.
