Oh for fuck's sake
Found this, of all places, from the Yale Daily News.

Editorial in the Daily Princetonian blames girls for getting themselves drunk and date-raped.

243 comments, uniformly raging at the tremendous fail. That, at least, is somewhat comforting. Still, when Yale looks at you as an overprivileged insensitive fuckwad, you are in a category all your own.

Wait, what? A woman passing out drunk can be inferred as her agreeing to sex with anybody? Well ok!

I don't even want to get into the entitlement issues that fill this editorial. I just woke up and it would make my brain hurt. I will say Kudos to the first commenter though; nothing like a big "YOU FAIL" with quotes and actual evidence.

*sigh* This doesn't even surprise me. There's a reason I didn't go to Princeton, and that's that I hate a lot of the undergrads. Some of them are perfectly fine people -- I have several friends who went there, but it's a haven of over-privileged idiots (my father teaches there and the stories he tells are not pretty).

On the other hand, I also grew up around his department's grad students, who were almost uniformly cool people and terrifyingly smart. So, you know, it isn't all bad there.

That's pretty much every university though - a lot of undergrads going to school at their rich parents' behest and dime. And consider college to be maditorily designated as a time to just go batshit wild. The public state university I attended was pretty much the same, to a degree.

Grad students are usually there because they've worked their asses off, and they genuinely need to or want to be, and aren't typically being given a free pass by mommy and daddy.

Also, this quote - "We live in times when sexual discrimination has, more or less, disappeared from our society."

Oh. Puh. Leez. Somebody's been living under a fucking rock, clearly. And this statement alone pretty much invalidates the entire damned editorial, because anyone who believes this crap obviously doesn't have two brain cells left to rub together.

So glad I never wanted Princeton. If you'll excuse me, I'll be rounding up all the women's college alumni in my area and handing out torches and pitchforks.

*raises hand* I went to a recently co-ed former women's college... can I come if I provide my own pitchfork? ;)

Sure! Just watch yourself around those Sweet Briar girls, they're getting a little overexcited with the stabby and I think one of them brought the infamous hitching post for a club.

Actually my opinion of Princeton as a whole is not overly damaged by this (any more than my opinion of any other ivy). The comments on the article have been pretty consistently on the money, it's just that the thing was published the first place that's kind of off.

See, the published part bothers me. I hope there was at least a rebuttal published afterwards.

There was.

Of course, then they went and published this too, so apparently we're not done yet.

What an over privileged asshat.

At least most of the comments slam on the writer.

Whenever I hear stuff like this I kind of want to walk up to the rape apologists and do painful things to them. I mean, by their own logic they should have known they'd piss people off, so they're totally to blame for their own hospitalization. Right?

So... if I get drunk at a party, and you say to me, "can I hit you?" and I giggle and say yes because I think you're joking and then you beat the shit out of me, it's all my fault, yes? You cannot be charged with assault and battery, yes?

Because that is the same damn logic.

Well, of course it's your fault if you're a girl. It's only assault if someone hits a drunk guy.

Discrimination has disappeared? Tell that to the women in Utah who can now do hard time for their inability to carry a child to term.

I'm kind of amazed that a woman from Romania thinks that discrimination has disappeared.

Oh, yay, it's another "My friend got charged with rape because some evil harpie decided to falsely accuse him!!! And totes because she should have known better than to get drunk, not because my friend should have known better than to have sex with someone who was drunk."

If men want to go on and on until they run out of breath about how women should protect themselves, then they should protect themselves as well. Don't want to get charged with rape? Don't have sex with a woman who can't give consent. Easy!

Also, I'm pretty sure a woman who humped an unconscious man could, indeed, be charged with rape. It's just because of that sexism that you say we don't have anymore that men are discouraged from reporting such incidents, or even treating them as rape.

I REALLY, REALLY don't want to get into the details, but -- I actually do know someone who was briefly falsely accused of improper sexual conduct. However, knowing this person and knowing about this incident has done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to make me think "therefore, EVERYONE WHO EVER ACCUSES ANYONE OF RAPE EVER is bullshitting", because such instances are a PROFOUNDLY RARE EXCEPTION, and the vast and overwhelming majority of rape investigations are just HELL ON EARTH for everyone concerned.

Yes, there may indeed be a very small number of wack-jobs who aren't quite accurate in their accusations -- but you do not deal with those small number of wack-jobs by PUNISHING EVERY OTHER VICTIM. You deal with it by analyzing that specific case, and if you find that that SPECIFIC CASE is bullshit, you prosecute the SPECIFIC FALSE ACCUSER. Not the vast and overwhelming majority of other victims who aren't making it up because it really happened.

I know someone who was accused of similar, and I know damn well it was false because I was there at the time. It doesn't make me think all women are lying, it just makes me think you don't go near someone who is that drunk - not even to help them.

We live in times when sexual discrimination has, more or less, disappeared from our society....If both people were drunk and if the girl has the right to make the accusation of rape, then why shouldn’t the boy enjoy the same privileges?

I'll take heteronormativity and gender binary for $100, Alex.
