Miss. lesbian student's prom night falls short
Remember Constance McMillen, the girl who’s high school in Mississippi canceled prom to keep her and her girlfriend from attending and wearing tuxedos, sued, and won her case in court?

In another discrimitory move by her homophobic community, Constance and seven other students were sent to attend a fake prom while parents (and possibly school officials) planned and hosted a private secret prom for everyone else.

Miss. lesbian student's prom night falls short

By SHELIA BYRD (AP)

JACKSON, Miss. — Senior prom fell far short of the rite of passage Constance McMillen was hoping for when she began a legal battle to challenge a ban on same-sex dates.

The 18-year-old lesbian student said Tuesday she was one of only seven students to show up at a private event chaperoned by school officials last Friday night. She said the rest of her peers went to another private event where she wasn't invited.

"It was not the prom I imagined," she said Tuesday. "It really hurts my feelings. These are still people who I've gone through school with, even teachers who loved me before this all started. I've never been a bad student and I don't feel like I deserve to be put through this."
Her case drew a national spotlight after she and the American Civil Liberties Union challenged an Itawamba County School District rule that banned same-sex prom dates and a requirement that only male students wear tuxedos.

The ACLU sent a demand letter to Superintendent Teresa McNeece in February, saying the rules against same-sex prom dates and girls wearing tuxedos violated McMillen's constitutional rights. The district responded by withdrawing its sponsorship and canceling the April 2 event.
In an apparent compromise, school district officials said parents would organize a private event with school chaperones that McMillen could attend, tuxedo and all.

McMillen didn't take her girlfriend because the girl's parents wouldn't let her go to the event. McMillen escorted another female instead. She did, however, wear a black tuxedo with a blue green vest.
But when she, her date and a friend showed up at Fulton Country Club, only four other people were there. She left after half an hour.
McMillen said she knew there was another event in the works and she has seen several pictures from the party on Facebook.

"When I found out that there was another prom, I called and asked if I was invited and (a student) told me the prom was at the country club so I took that as a 'no,'" McMillen said.

It's unclear who organized the other dance, said Kristy Bennett, ACLU Mississippi legal director. School officials and many of the locals won't talk about it.

Bennett said "we're investigating if the prom at the country club was a sham or a decoy." But Bennett said she doesn't know if there are any legal ramifications because the majority of students chose to go to an event that didn't include McMillen.

"It's evidence that what (school officials) represented to the judge didn't happen," Bennett said.
Michele Floyd, the school board attorney, and McNeece didn't return messages left on Tuesday. People who answered the phone at several businesses in Fulton, a town of about 4,000, declined to comment about the issue.

Ellen Kahn, a spokeswoman for the Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest gay rights group, said the organization began an online petition Tuesday to gather signatures to protest McMillen's treatment. Kahn said the names will be presented to the teen and the school district, along with a comprehensive guide on tolerance in schools.

"The part of this story that's hardest to handle is that adults were very much in control of making this decision and supporting this decision," said Kahn, referring to the dual proms.
McMillen's voice cracked as she talked about how her school life had changed, but she said if given a choice, she would have taken the same route.

"There are a lot of people that go through this every day and now they won't have to go through this," she said.

The fake prom was at the country club. The real one was somewhere else.

Two students with learning difficulties were among the seven people at the country club event, McMillen recalls. "They had the time of their lives," McMillen says. "That's the one good thing that come out of this, [these kids] didn't have to worry about people making fun of them [at their prom]."

She seems like such an amazing person.

God. First the Hetalia imbroglio and now this. What a hideous week it's been so far.

Ugly is the only word I have to describe this. Oh, and apparently, in the advocate article, there's another buried shit diamond:

Two students with learning difficulties were among the seven people at the country club event, McMillen recalls. "They had the time of their lives," McMillen says. "That's the one good thing that come out of this, [these kids] didn't have to worry about people making fun of them [at their prom]."

So it sounds to me like this fake event was not just for McMillen, but for other "undesirables."

Don't forget this charming comment left on a news site by a classmate (taken from here):

**Open Minded Readers Only**
I am a senior at IAHS, and I’ve known Constance for the last 6 years. Please hear our side of the story before you decide on our fate.
The party we had in Evergreen (the county neighborhood I live in) is 30 mins away from the school. we rented out the community center, hired vendors, decorated, and our parents ran the security/chaperone staff- but it wasn’t prom. Prom was at the country club where constance and 7 other students were. The reason the senior class boycotted the actual prom was not because we hate gays. We wanted a drama-free gathering to celebrate 3 great years and 1 lousy one together, and we wanted to lay low. We also wanted to do it without the main cause of the lousy. What people are failing to realize is that much of the fault of this whole stink lies with Constance, not her mistreatment by the school district, but her crazy-reckless need for attention. It sounds mean and horrible and like we planned it all specifically to embarrass Constance, but we didn’t. We let her have her prom with her girlfriend and her tuxedo and we went to party it up in the “boondocks” not because we wanted her rights violated, but so we could salvage what has turned into a total fiasco. As a whole we didn’t support her decision to throw the district under the bus, or her insinuations that we’re all just a bunch ‘a hicks driving around in beater pick up trucks spitting tobacco and burning crosses. IAHS is one of the top schools in the state and I’m proud of that, and I’m proud that we took a stand and just said you know what? forget it, we have just as much right as you do to have a party for ourselves. So we did, and now we’re getting flack because poor Connie’s ego got a bit of bruising. She’s playing the lesbian card to prove she ALWAYS gets what she wants. This time, we didn’t just let her.
Take it as you will, because I’m sure it sounds like we faked her out, but understand this- the decision NOT to attend prom had nothing to do with the school or with Constance’s sexual preferences; it had everything to do with proving we weren’t going to let her and the ACLU steamroll us into doing what Constance wanted. We flexed the muscle of the majority and we’ll suffer the consequences.

Oh there are more defenders. #57

as another student of IAHS i’m TIRED OF THIS. it has made me LOSE FAITH IN THE MEDIA.

Huh. "best school in the state" and she hasn't learned the phrase "liberal media."

NONE OF YOU KNOW CONSTANCE. she has been pulling this stuff for years and I doubt she’s a lesbian frankly. but whatever she’s got her college paid for and she got to wear her “different” tux and everyone loves her and she’s got exactly what she wanted. it is ironic that we are called the close minded when you all throw slurs at us and you don’t even know us. you’re all so hateful. all we wanted was a quiet night away from this mess and her but we have that taken away from us now.

I'm not even going to try to mock that bit.

and i don’t understand the disabled kids stuff, we don’t even talk to them, so stop judging. they could have come to our prom if they wanted to.

And #58

also i’m proud of our administration for backing us up by the way instead of running away from all of you. that’s courage, not trying to get away with wearing weird clothes. you all think she’s an angel..

Courage? Not the word I'd use. Bigotry, maybe.

And #65...

you know what i mean by weird. what if she wanted to come to prom with a police siren on her head? one that’s really loud would you defend her then?? that’s what SHE WAS DOING THIS FOR. TO GET PEOPLE TO STARE AT HER. she is using the lesbian thing as an excuse to look like a victim but she JUST WANTS YOU TO LOOK AT HER. she ruined our year… just because something is legal doesn’t make it right. like i said she won anyway she got her prom.

"JUST WANTS YOU TO LOOK AT HER."

Methinks the lady doth protest too much...

All night I've been moping about high school (I'm 38 years old, btw) and now I realize why: When I was a junior, the theater teacher who was sleeping with a student found out that I knew. She freaked, thinking I would tell on her, so when she kicked a rich popular girl out of Theater, she told the girl it was my fault. She knew the rich girl and her parents would harass me, which they did. Lots of students and parents got involved, there were meetings about how to "deal with" me, I was deliberately not told about school events, given bad grades "accidentally", etc.

I think we all feel terrible for Constance. But I know how bad it can be from experience and I didn't even have the entire town pull anything like this. I'm just shaking in horror at what she must be going through. And the parents of those learning disabled kids, and anyone else who was deliberately excluded. Or the kids who weren't excluded but are too afraid to say anything knowing how shit their lives can be if they speak out.

I still can't believe people can do this to each other. Kids... eh, maybe. But the parents. THE ADULTS. How does it even get to this point?

You're a town of adults, bullying a couple of teenagers and telling your children to do the same. You must be so proud.

Above and beyond the homophobia, I'm trying to think of any circumstances under which I would regard this kind of behavior as reasonable or acceptable, and there are none. None at all. The very idea of adults organizing a "secret prom" to keep two teenager out is an embarrassment to any dignity or maturity you claim to have. Hand in your adult cards and go back to the seventh fucking grade where you evidently belong.

I hope every kid who went to the "real" prom someday wakes up and finds themselves unable to look themselves in the mirror.
