Racism: it's state policy
Arizona officially promotes racism.

I'm too worn out from raging and crying to make any kind of comment about being too afraid to leave my own fucking house because some racist asshole cop might decide to stop me because I don't look white enough.

ETA: Fixed HTML fail.

To save people from hurting their heads by reading the comments, here's the featured comment:

Why doesn't Arizona crack down on the companies that illegally hire them? They come for the jobs. If jobs were not available for them they wouldn't come.

Now, just imagine that all the comments have that level of sense.

Punishing CORPORATIONS? That's, like, unconstitutional, or something, right?

(I saw Food, Inc last week. So fucking infuriating.)

This, really this.

My work place, personally probably wouldn't care but because the laws in Australia are very very harsh on company that hire/recommend for hire people who don't have the right to work there, is really fricking paranoid, and checks really strictly /everyone/.

But you know, rules like that tend to make it harder for the white guys* and you can't have that? Who wants to live in a paperwork society!

* Seriously white guys are the ones that seem to have it hardest to produce the necessary ID to prove that they are allowed to work in Australia - which is proof of citizenship or proving that your on a visa that has work rights.

Despite the fact they have drivers licences and we ask for the same documents as the RTA ( http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/licensing/proofidentity/proofausresidency.html ) so it's also worth pointing out that not entirely coincidentally, white guys are the ones that are most likely to try and bullshit my work place though all sorts of crap.

My parents, sister, and her boyfriend are coming to visit this fall, and we're going to go into AZ for a weekend trip. A couple days ago, my mom messaged me on Facebook to ask if we thought they should bring their proof of citizenship; my mom & dad were naturalized back in the mid-80s. I was like, pff, we're going to be such a diverse group that we'll just look like frigging tourists anyway...

...but now that's it's actually passed, I'm starting to wonder how AZ plans to handle tourists under this stupid racist fucking bill.

That was one of the first things that occurred to me as well. After my blood pressure went down, the nausea lessened and my jaw unclenched, of course.

I'm so loaded with privilege (white, US-born, native English speaker) that it's unlikely such a law would affect someone like me, and yet all I can think is how inconvenient it is to have to travel with one's birth certificate.

(Especially since mine is a "Certificate of Live Birth" from the state of Washington, and in the Asshat Plane Arizona, that's clearly not a real birth certificate. After all, it bears a striking resemblance to Barack Obama's "fake" birth certificate from Hawaii.)

Clearly, I'm a Kenyan-born Muslim here to infilitrate America and brainwash your children. I even had special surgery to turn my skin white and my eyes blue.

You'll never see me coming.

I mean, it's not like we've got one of the world's most popular tourist locations here or anything.

I want to move so bad, you guys. :(

Despite passing a law that basically means "If you think someone looks like a Hispanic immigrant, feel free to pull them over and demand ID." Doublethink what.

and thinking "How can anyone say that with a straight face?"

This. I've known a few illegal immigrants from other countries such as various ones from Asia and Canada. I don't think anyone is going to start stopping white people in the streets and asking if they are illegal.

I like the whole part about "reason to suspect" someone is an illegal immigrant. What the hell constitutes a "reason"? And who the hell decides if it was a GOOD reason?

Seriously, this is a nightmare in so damned many ways, not the least of which is the legal nightmare it will become for the state of Arizona. But right now I'm thinking the state deserves every ounce of grief they might get.

This law is going to be struck down in court, and the politicians supporting it know it. It's a political ploy. In the meantime, though, plenty of people will get hurt. Despicable.

I'm kinda surprised she didn't get struck by lightning on the spot. Somehow I'm thinking the law will, oddly enough, be enforced mostly on those shifty un-American looking Mexican types speaking their crazy moon language and not so much good old-fashioned blue-eyed blondes with apple pie in their veins.

One silver lining: Obama is pointing at this law as an illustration of why the next big battle that needs to be fought out in Congress is immigration reform:

Our failure to act responsibly at the federal level will only open the door to irresponsibility by others. That includes, for example, the recent efforts in Arizona, which threaten to undermine basic notions of fairness that we cherish as Americans, as well as the trust between police and their communities that is so crucial to keeping us safe.

In fact, I've instructed members of my administration to closely monitor the situation and examine the civil rights and other implications of this legislation. But if we continue to fail to act at the federal level, we will continue to see misguided efforts opening up around the country.

Do you want to see an insane over-reaction by Conservative driving away all of their remaining minority support* just in time for the mid-term elections? Do you want to see hordes of angry and energized minority voters flocking to the polls? An immigration reform debate will do it in spades.

*as miniscule as that may be.

For all those who live in Arizona: has it always been this fail-tastic regarding race and law?
Because when my family drove there a few years ago on vacation (we're Black), we got pulled over by a cop for "driving too slow." So yeah.

Also, I love it when republicans whine "Why don't minorities like us? Why do they keep leaving us? T_T" and then pull crap like this. It's the political equivalent of Lucy being offended that Charlie Brown won't kick the football.

I tried to ask an Arizonian friend of mine WTF is up with her state. Said Arizonian friend turned out to be a jaded bitch and told me she doesn't care since it doesn't concern her and other people suck and aren't worth caring about. I sincerely hope this terrible attitude isn't prevalent in Arizona, though if it is, I'm not surprised this bill passed.

My mom and I were talking about this the other day and she spouted off about how much she agreed with this bill because "we need to keep our white children safe" (wtf does that mean?) Oh, but she's "not racist", and has no white privilege at all. Nuh-uh.

Sometimes I hate my family.

"It's going to change our lives," said Emilio Almodovar, a 13-year-old American citizen from Phoenix. "We can't walk to school any more. We can't be in the streets anymore without the pigs thinking we're illegal immigrants."

Maybe they could give all the legal Hispanics a special little button to wear on their lapels! *facepalm*
