Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
* The fic: http://gatorgrrrl.livejournal.com/166197.html and the art: http://mementis.livejournal.com/1772.html

* Highlights from the fic, in case you don't want to read the whole thing (and why wouldn't you?)

* "I am very sorry to hear that my choice of setting offended you. It was not my intention in the least to treat the Haiti earthquake lightly or to diminish the devastation of it. I tried my best to treat the topic with respect and frankly, I think I did a decent job of it."

* The soundtrack! Also: "When I signed up for Big Bang back in January, I had a completely different story in mind. An SPN gen story, in fact. That idea languished inside my head for a few weeks until I finally gave up trying to force it and moved on. Then the idea of a different J2 AU fic popped into my head, but again, it didn't go anywhere. Then it occurred to me: Why not use current events as the setting? The Haiti earthquake was still in the news and the more I saw about it, the more I wanted to use it until it seemed like the best idea ever. (That, of course, is only my opinion.)"

* "For what it's worth, I apologize."

ETA: Relevant links from amazonziti.

ETA 2: (I'm assuming there's more of this out there, but I don't have the heart to look) "But when I fucking cried over this last night, I cried because all I could think -- ALL I could think -- was of this woman writing a motherfucking 80,000-word story, and unveiling it with terror and excitement first in her mind. And having it blow up so spectacularly in her face."

ETA 3: New apology, fic taken down. "This is the last thing I will be saying about this situation. At this point, there is nothing else I can do. I have acknowledged my mistakes and apologized for the offense and outrage my story caused. I acknowledge that my actions in posting the story have hurt a lot of people. I see now that I failed in so many ways. The fact that this has snowballed in many instances into a free-for-all of hatred is very sad. I regret that so many hurtful things have been said to and about people who had nothing to do with the fic besides reading it. Going beyond the fic to bash me personally and calling me names is expected, if unnecessary, but attacking people just because they happened to like something you didn't is not fair."

Maybe they see those shows as fishbowls where the black people are some kind of novelty. As in, "Look at what those wacky shenanigans blacks get up to when no one else is around!"

I noticed all the shows you named were comedies, and I was trying to think of a show consisting of a nonwhite cast that didn't center around how hilarious black people were. There's Roots, but I'm not sure that's the best example.

That's an interesting point. Has American TV had a drama with an all-black cast? Frank's Place comes to mind, and of course, that didn't last very long.

Oh, Frank's Place! Now there was good television, and dead much too fast.

I'm really looking forward to Undercovers for that reason.

I was thinking DS9, but that's not an all-nonwhite cast. Still, Avery Brooks. :Db

Playing the father of a family that happened to be black, instead of a "black family".

Does the cast have to be 100% non-white or just majority non-white? If the latter, wouldn't The Wire count?

MTE. And while a while character (McNulty) does seem to be the 'main character' at first, there's at least one or two seasons where he's practically non-existent. (Season 4 was particularly good, almost completely non-white and gets a bit more away from the focus just being on crime and drug-dealing.)

Also, I haven't seen it yet (cannot afford HBO), but isn't their new show Treme also majority non-white?

All I know about Treme is John Goodman's in it and he's a pissed off man. (I've seen like half an episode before True Blood started last week since I don't have HBO either. That's a 10/mon expense I can't justify, sadly.)
