Paladino: Gays are brainwashing the kids!

Paladino Laces Speech With Antigay Remarks

(note: NYTimes requires a free account to read the article, so I've copypasta'd it here for those who don't want to bother)

By ELIZABETH A. HARRIS
Published: October 10, 2010

The Republican candidate for governor, Carl P. Paladino, told a gathering in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, on Sunday that children should not be “brainwashed” into thinking that homosexuality was acceptable, and criticized his opponent, Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo, for marching in a gay pride parade earlier this year.

Addressing Orthodox Jewish leaders, Mr. Paladino described his opposition to same-sex marriage.

“I just think my children and your children would be much better off and much more successful getting married and raising a family, and I don’t want them brainwashed into thinking that homosexuality is an equally valid and successful option — it isn’t,” he said, reading from a prepared address, according to a video of the event.

And then, to applause at Congregation Shaarei Chaim, he said: “I didn’t march in the gay parade this year — the gay pride parade this year. My opponent did, and that’s not the example we should be showing our children.” Newsday.com reported that Mr. Paladino’s prepared text had included the sentence: “There is nothing to be proud of in being a dysfunctional homosexual.” But Mr. Paladino omitted the sentence in his speech.

About an hour after Mr. Paladino’s remarks, Mr. Cuomo’s campaign released a statement condemning them.

“Mr. Paladino’s statement displays a stunning homophobia and a glaring disregard for basic equality,” it said. “These comments along with other views he has espoused make it clear that he is way out of the mainstream and is unfit to represent New York.”Mr. Paladino declined a request to be interviewed after his appearance. His campaign manager, Michael R. Caputo, denied assertions that Mr. Paladino was antigay, and noted that he employed a gay man on his campaign staff.

“Carl Paladino is simply expressing the views that he holds in his heart as a Catholic,” Mr. Caputo said in a telephone interview. “Carl Paladino is not homophobic, and neither is the Catholic Church.”

“The majority of New Yorkers agree with him,” Mr. Caputo added. He said the campaign had done its own polling.

During his appearance at the synagogue, with reporters in attendance, Mr. Paladino said: “Don’t misquote me as wanting to hurt homosexual people in any way. That would be a dastardly lie.”

A same-sex marriage bill was defeated last year by New York lawmakers. Mr. Paladino has said that, unlike Mr. Cuomo, a Democrat, he would veto such a bill if he were governor. But Mr. Caputo said that if the same measure passed in a statewide referendum, Mr. Paladino would uphold the law.

Brian Ellner, head of the marriage initiative for the gay advocacy group Human Rights Campaign, said that the Republican’s remarks were insensitive given a recent swirl of news about suicide in the gay community and antigay violence.

The New York City Police Department announced on Friday that nine men in the Bronx had lured three men they believed were gay and then tortured them. Last month, a student at Rutgers University jumped off the George Washington Bridge after two classmates broadcast his sexual encounter with a man over the Internet.

Mr. Paladino’s statements in Brooklyn were first broadcast by Azi Paybarah, a reporter for WNYC, and Reid Epstein of Newsday, on Twitter.

The back-and-forth between the two campaigns took a strange turn late on Sunday, when Mr. Caputo suggested that, on Aug. 20, a Cuomo staff member had referred to two gay male aides to Mr. Paladino as “girls.” The aides were accompanying a Paladino volunteer dressed in a duck costume, and blowing duck calls, to call attention to what the Paladino campaign said was Mr. Cuomo’s habit of ducking issues.

According to Mr. Caputo, the aides were approached by the Cuomo staff member and told: “If you girls don’t get out of here I’m going to shove those duck calls down your throats.”

Mr. Caputo said the encounter was “likely a hate crime since the Cuomo staffer clearly referenced their sexuality in his threat.” The Cuomo campaign did not respond late Sunday.

The commentary I've seen on the article have been surprisingly non-rage-inducing -- though a few of them are pretty bad.

Seriously, brainwashing? Homosexuality is not okay? FUCK YOU, ASSHOLE.

ETA: It gets better, trust me! Paladino would totally hire gays, guys! He can't hate them, cuz he'd hire them! (if that link doesn't work, I copied the text to my JF here)

And Paladino has no regrets cuz what he believes is what he believes and it's totes not wrong! (if that link doesn't work, I copied the text to my JF here)

ETA 2: Paladino apologizes in perhaps typical political fashion: "I'm sorry you were upset by my honest hate-speech poorly-chosen words." (if that link doesn't work, I copied the text to my JF here)

ETA 3: In a twist of fail that may even exceed Paladino's, the Jewish Orthodox church he had support from has withdrawn support of Paladino because they don't approve of his apology.

Also, it's been found that anti-abortion Paladino has leased an abortion clinic to Planned Parenthood. And apparently has owned a gay bar in the past. Does this man know anything about how to play politics?

ETA 4: Paladino considers his children to be off-limits for political games, but not his opponent's children! He lambastes Cuomo for marching with his daughters in a Gay Pride Parade.

ETA 5: (hat-tip to [info]queencallipygos for suggesting this ETA) So Paladino is quite the email-troll. Zach Nikonovich-Kahn, a former political intern in NYC, angrily confronted Paladino in an email, and in a series of subsequent emails, Paladino basically trolled him by telling him to learn to read, to stop believing whatever he reads, to stop reading crap, and to take his "meeds" (Personally? I don't think what Zach did was very wise or professional, but Paladino's responses really do have to be seen to be believed, it is amazing how immature he is about it!)

Ditto this, times 9000.

It's been terrible fun teasing my ultra-republican parents about who they're going to vote for, because even they don't want to touch Paladino with a 25 and a half foot pole.

Yeah, there are some people who are such assholes you look forward to the pleasure of checking off their opponent's name. I'm in CO and this is the first year I'm legal to vote, so I'm very greatly anticipating the pleasure of voting against Ken Buck. Seriously, asshole, having an anti-abortion rally on my campus isn't going to make me vote for you- it's going to make me hope to God that you won't win, and go throw eggs at you if you do get elected.

“Carl Paladino is not homophobic, and neither is the Catholic Church.”

Wow. They can grasp that being homophobic is bad, but not that hating and insulting gay people, what homophobia is, is also bad.

I'd like everyone to know I'm not a liar! I don't like telling the truth, I'm just expressing my own beliefs about reality. Now to go convince the police that since I say I'm not a thief, they should let me take whatever I want from stores without paying for it.

He doesn't actually know what the word "homophobia" means, does he?

Either that, or he's trying to be literal. He doesn't FEAR gays! And neither does the Catholic church! What's a pithy, Latin way to say "despises gays and all that they stand for"?

I've come to hate that defence, as well as the whole "Well, you can't prove s/he really hates gays based on his/her voting record/public statements/public endorsements"-spiel.

Look, I don't care if some asshole loves the fuck out of Ellen, if they say things like that, it's homophobic and they should be called out on it.

A possible bright spot?
[info]queencallipygos
2010-10-14 01:19 pm UTC (link)
The Orthodox Rabbi who supported Paladino has now withdrawn his support because of Paladino's fauxpology.

The rabbi....said Mr. Paladino “folded like a cheap camera” because of the uproar they had set off. And the rabbi said he could no longer support Mr. Paladino’s candidacy for governor of New York. “Which part of the speech that you gave in Brooklyn to the Orthodox Jewish community are you apologizing for?” Rabbi Levin asked at a news conference in front of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, on Fifth Avenue. “Will we see you next year with your daughter at that gay pride march?”

So here's what I'm thinking: Paladino has already trashed his chances with the LGBT community and its supporters. But now, this means he's also trashed his chances amongst the Orthodox Jewish community. So that leaves...who, precisely?

Apparently the New York Post uncovered the fact that Paladino held the lease on a gay bar for years -- and just this morning revealed that, even though he's publically against abortion, he's leased space to a Planned Parenthood office in Niagara Falls that has the clearance to distribute RU-486.

Dear GOD this election is going to be interesting.

Possibly an ETA 5?
[info]queencallipygos
2010-10-18 04:52 pm UTC (link)
Gawker just printed an email exchange between Zach, a former NYC intern and activist, and Carl Paladino. Zach calls Paladino a homophobe -- and Carl responds with "learn to read and don't believe everything you read" and "did you take your meeds today" (sic).

Recent New York Times articles claim that Andrew Cuomo is reviewing notes and rehearsing for an upcoming debate, because "he's afraid of doing something wrong". When THIS is his competition, I think that the onlyw ay he could lose is if "doing something wrong" means "Cuomo walking in wearing a Hitler costume and riddling the room with bullets on live TV and finishing off by turning to the camera and screaming 'GO TEAM JACOB'."
