What I Can't: Even

Yes, this is quick, but I was full of so much rage that I just had to post this. Also, debated whether or not to post this here or i_wank, since I was one of the three commenters before the mod locked the post, but due to the subject matter, I decided to put it here. Will move somewhere else if asked.

Basically, a post is made in deleterius, a Mary-Sue sporking community.

So, yeah, awhile back I got rid of the Tviokh journal.
Just using this old, dead RP journal to admin stuff now.

At any rate, I got a lovely, whiny email from a member today:

I've always loved deleterius. The sporkers are hilarious and it really makes my day better. I was looking at the site today and the picture in the right hand column-type thing (IDK what to call it) caught my attention. It was a swastika with "canon" written on it. Now, I know it's a joke. But I'm Jewish, and even the term "Grammar Nazi" annoys me. Your picture really offends me, and I'd like for you to replace it with something else. Otherwise, I may have to go elsewhere for humor, and that would really, really, REALLY suck. I like Deleterius, and it would be a shame if I couldn't visit it anymore just because of an image.

Let me be the first to say, don't let the door hit you on the way out.

This is not a "safe place".
I am not going to require that people choose their words or icons 'carefully' lest they offend some poor, thin skinned whiner.
You do not have the right to never be offended. (even if you are Jewish)
And, frankly, if you are offended, it's not my problem nor is it my responsibility to fix the issue.
If you're offended, the problem is on your end (which is why YOU'RE the one offended) and you may feel free to take your bat, ball and go home.

If you want a community that is a safe place, and who will ass-pat you and comfort you when the bad words sting, it's not here.

Right, then, back to the regularly scheduled badfic.

Edit for the newer members: We had the discussion over the icon when it went up years ago.
General consensus was if you don't like it, fine. You don't have to.
You also don't have to stay in the community, and given the nature of the community itself (making fun of other peoples' fanfic), it seems a bit silly to try and take the, "Let's all be gentle and never offend anyone ever."

I also do not buy into the "If someone is offended by you, it's your fault" sort of culture that's started to rise on the Internet.

You do not.
Ever.
Have the right to not be offended.
If you are offended, fine, be offended, but the problem is still on your end.

The icon is not up for discussion.

If it offends you that badly, feel free to leave the community. Nobody aside from you and your ass patters will care.

This horribleness pretty much speaks for itself. Also, the email the mod received is actually the LEAST whiny email I've ever read.

I wasn't in the comm 3 years ago, and I never look at the main page, I read the entries straight from my flist. And it has nothing to do with whether I like it or not, it's your completely offensive behavior and dismissive belittlement of another person's beliefs. While this may not be a "safe space" or whatever, that doesn't allow you to act like a bigoted jackhat.

Because "triggers are unique to everyone; it'd be impossible to make this a 'safe space' for every single person, especially given that it's a community dedicated to making fun of people's writing" and "FUCK YOU WE'LL USE ALL THE SWASTIKAS WE WANT" are totally comparable stances.

Ugh, this brings back some unpleasant memories. Nice to see that Tviokh hasn't changed one bit.

For someone who likes to act tough on the internet, polite and reasonable requests always seem to send Tviokh into a frenzy.

I left the community years ago over that icon. I was planning to leave anyway because the mods did nothing to stop the trolling of authors - mocking fic is one thing but seeing a community gang up on teenagers was sickening. There's concrit and then there's outright cruelty. But the icon was the last straw - especially the dismissive attitude to people with legitimate concerns, some of whom had been directly affected by the Holocaust.

Oh, and I remember when some people pointed out it was illegal for the swastika to be displayed in their country. If they used a public/university computer to visit the community, it could get them into a lot of trouble. That went over about as well as you would expect - what are you doing using a public computer to read lj, not my fault you live in some weird European country, etc.

Um, I may still have some feelings about that community.
