Live video feeds from Wisconsin
As you might have heard, the Wisconsin Senate has voted to eliminate collective bargaining. D:< Check out this link for live coverage of the occupation of the state capital. There are growing concerns about demonstrators being arrested.

http://theuptake.org/2011/03/09/wisconsin-senate-votes-to-eliminate-collective-bargaining/

EDIT: There is a delay on the feed it seems but it's still more than you're going to see on network television. Right now the protesters are floating ideas of a general strike and/or a recall election. They are staying in the capital tonight for fear that the building will be locked down again and they will be unable to resume protesting today if they leave.

EDIT 2: I'm going to update more when I get home (thanks for the links - keep'em coming). Also, if anyone has news of protests in other states I'd love it if you could comment and let us know. Thanks!

EDIT 3: Contact info for the 'Governor' of Wisconsin -

For those who live in Wisconsin

Unless my reading skills are complete shit this is illegal

Does anyone know of protests in other states? I've been trying to find info on upcoming protests in Michigan to no avail.

Representative Barca makes a desperate plea to the Republicans as they 'passed' the bill (Rage-inducing - I would also avoid the comments to the video)

My god.

Our country is run by disease-ridden snails, isn't it?

I swear, I need like 4 shots of alcohol a day just to get past the stupid.

For some unknown reason, I watched C-SPAN earlier. I already feel stupider. I think the Wisconsin governor knows the dude from Mississippi that wants more, expedited off-shore drilling.

As someone who used to study disease-ridden snails, that comparison does infected gastropods a disservice.

I'm sorry. I couldn't say my real thoughts or I'd be in trouble. So snails seemed nice. (Plus, as a kid, I used to play with them when collecting fiddler crabs at the beach...much like my letters to Congress.)

There seems to be some doubt that it was.

I'm encouraging everyone to take a minute and do two things:

1. Donate to the foundation trying to recall the Wisconin election on ActBlue right now. They've got about $783,000 right now -- their initial goal was $750,000 posted last night, and they surpassed that in less than twelve hours, so they raised their fundraising goal to a million. (And don't think that you don't have enough. I only donated fifteen bucks. The idea is that if a lot of people donate fifteen bucks that still adds up to one hell of a shitload.)

2. Post a Facebook status update declaring that you are not going to boycott any Wisconsin products, and boycott the state of Wisconsin for your travels, as long as Governor Walker and these eight senators are in office.

The first one puts some money towards a group that could do some good, the second gets the word out that people outside Wisconsin are also pissed. (And hey, using Facebook worked real well for Egypt recently.)

And in case someone is from Wisconsin and don't know about this yet, there's this site, which lists a number of businesses in different cities which have been vocal in opposing the bill.

I've been going back and forth on writing to tell him that UW Madison and Milwaukee were two of my top three choices for grad school at least in part because I want to move back to Madison so badly, but no so much now (except that oh hell yes I'm still going up there if either UW makes me the best offer out of the schools I'm applying to; I'm too poor to turn down good money over ethics).

I visited UW Madison the week before this all started happening. I am actually really relieved that my visit helped me decide that Wisconsin wasn't the place for me. I so do not want to in that state for two years. Particularly during an election year. It would not be good to my blood pressure. (Though I'm not sure how much I will avoid by going to the next state down...)

I actually missed the deadline for UW Madison when I was in the midst of having anxiety attacks over my statement of purpose (it has to be perfect or I won't get in anywhere and I can't make it perfect and OH MY GOD). But the more I think about it, the more I'm pretty sure I didn't want to go to UW Madison, I wanted to move back to Madison. The program emphasis I wanted, I would've had to do a year in their general program and then apply for one of fifteen openings in the emphasis track, and I just didn't want to waste that kind of time.

But I lived in Madison for about three years when I was a kid, and it's still more home to me than Ohio even though kids born the year we moved here are graduating college this summer. I had a job interview back up there this summer, and I was driving up going "okay, don't get too excited, Madison isn't going to be perfect like you remember it..." and it wasn't, but it was awfully darn close.

I was born in Ann Arbor, and my mother was pushing for Madison because according to everyone the two cities are very similar. And they may be, but I wasn't able to see much of Madison beyond the few buildings I was in on campus. And the people in the program I would be in were, well, less friendly than the school I have decided to go to. Considering the amount of time this program requires you to spend on campus and socializing with fellow students, I'm going with the friendly option.

Washington Hills makes a pretty decent Riesling. I get it at Publix and it's worth the price, unlike many wine sold in grocery stores.

I don't know if anyone saw it on CSPAN earlier today, but I was finishing up my packing of the apartment for move out and a senator called out Walker for acting stupid. I was thrilled. I wish I'd gotten his name. I couldn't pay attention to the specific people since I only had 1.5 hours to finish up and get everything in the storage room or my car. But I was all "Woohoo!"

Now I just kinda move there to deposit my money, just to take it out again.

I took my money out of Wells Fargo (formerly Wachovia) when they spoke down to my aging godmom. I can so see doing this as a smart plan on the people. I went to a Credit Union. I wonder where they're going to go.

Yes, you are reading it right and yes, they did shut down that branch. I know the author of the Daily Kos diary at that second link. He is not kidding.

Speaking of people protesting banks and shutting them down, do I have a group for you: U.S. Uncut, which is modeled after U.K. Uncut.

If they're too radical for you, then I might be interested in Coffee Party USA. They're working on a campaign about banks, too.

They also produced a video in support of Planned Parenthood.

Full disclosure: I'm one of the New Media Outreach Coordinators for Coffee Party USA and run [info]coffeepartyusa on LJ and [community profile] coffeepartyusa on Dreamwidth.
