California Legislature Passes LGBT History Bill

The California Assembly today gave final approval to a bill sponsored by openly gay State Sen. Mark Leno that will require the state’s public schools to “fairly and accurately portray the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights movement and the historic contributions of the diverse LGBT community in social science instruction,” according to a release from the Gay-Straight Alliance Network.

“We can’t tell our youth that it’s OK to be yourself and expect them to treat their peers with dignity and respect when we deliberately deny them accurate information about the historical contributions of Americans who happened to be LGBT,” Leno said.

“This is a victory not only for the LGBT youth in California who have been fighting to be heard in Sacramento and represented in their history classes, but also for all California youth who deserve to learn a fair and accurate account of California and US history,” said Carolyn Laub, Executive Director of Gay-Straight Alliance Network.

GSA Network worked alongside Equality California to help pass the landmark legislation.

Somewhere, Harvey Milk is smiling.

ETA: The bill, SB 48, can be read here. LGBT people are not the only people who are going to get the same representation that other members have already existing in current laws. Mexican-Americans and persons with disabilities are now also included. Changes to existing California law and the bill are marked with strike tags and italics.

You took the words right out of my mouth.

They DON'T care and probably DO hope a lot of people just go off and die somewhere so they don't have to be bothered...

And these are always the people who claim--loudly--to be just sooooo very fucking "Christian". (Bitchyquotes because they are no such fucking thing.)

Seriously, you greedy old douchestains, the archangels would kick you in the balls.

That's the thing for me, though; all these people who are so smugly patting themselves on the back for "making the hard choices", a phrase which here means stripping the poor and vulnerable of even more dignity, are soon going to be squawking indignantly about the sudden influx of poor, dirty, starving, helpless people on the sidewalks outside their trendy restaurants. So, while they might have solved the problem of "wasteful spending" by cutting funding to these groups, they've created a new seat of problems by leaving them with no medical care, no homes, and no resources by which to even support themselves on the most basic level.

And after all that, the budget will still be in a major deficit, so how has this helped anyone or set anyone on the right track?

It's kept the richest Californians from having to pay their fair share of taxes! What's a little loss of fundamental infrastructure compared to that? Besides, we're still paying for the prison system, so we can just shove 'em in there.
