WTF, Neighborhood Watch?!
"Family of Florida boy killed by Neighborhood Watch seeks arrest."

ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) - The family of a 17-year-old African-American boy shot to death last month in his gated Florida community by a white Neighborhood Watch captain wants to see the captain arrested, the family's lawyer said on Wednesday.

Trayvon Martin was shot dead after he took a break from watching NBA All-Star game television coverage to walk 10 minutes to a convenience store to buy snacks including Skittles candy requested by his 13-year-old brother, Chad, the family's lawyer Ben Crump said.

"He was a good kid," Crump said in an interview, adding that the family would issue a call for the Watch captain's arrest at a news conference on Thursday. "On his way home, a Neighborhood Watch loose cannon shot and killed him."

Trayvon, who lived in Miami with his mother, had been visiting his father and stepmother in a gated townhome community called The Retreat at Twin Lakes in Sanford, 20 miles north of Orlando.

As Trayvon returned to the townhome, Sanford police received a 911 call reporting a suspicious person.

Although names are blacked out on the police report, Crump and media reports at the time of the shooting identified the caller as George Zimmerman who is listed in the community's newsletter as the Neighborhood Watch captain.

Without waiting for police to arrive, Crump said, Zimmerman confronted Trayvon, who was on the sidewalk near his home. By the time police got there, Trayvon was dead of a single gunshot to the chest.

"What do the police find in his pocket? Skittles," Crump said. "A can of Arizona ice tea in his jacket pocket and Skittles in his front pocket for his brother Chad."

Zimmerman could not be reached for comment on Wednesday evening at a phone number listed for him on the community's newsletter.

Crump said the family was concerned that police might decide to consider the shooting as self defense, and that police have ignored the family's request for a copy of the original 911 call, which they think will shed light on the incidents.

"If the 911 protocol across the country held to form here, they told him not to get involved. He disobeyed that order," said Ryan Julison, a spokesman for the family.

"He (Zimmerman) didn't have to get out of his car," said Crump, who has prepared a public records lawsuit to file on Thursday if the family doesn't get the 911 tape. "If he never gets out of his car, there is no reason for self-defense. Trayvon only has skittles. He has the gun."

Since Trayvon, a high school junior who wanted to be a pilot, was black and Zimmerman is white, Crump said race is "the 600 pound elephant in the room."

"Why is this kid suspicious in the first place? I think a stereotype must have been placed on the kid," Crump said.

ETA: There is now a petition to prosecute Zimmerman.

I was just reading about this on Yahoo. I think the family's fears that this might be written off as self-defense are totally justified.

Unfortunately all too likely, even if it makes zero sense. What in the world could he possibly have done to pose any kind of threat, let alone one that required shooting to defend from? Against a grown man, without a weapon of any kind, and with no reason to want to antagonise anyone. Just sickening the lengths people will go to blame the victim.

Yeah, I can't possibly think of anything that could justify this, and yet I can totally see it being swept under a rug even though someone is dead, because he was black and because the perpetrator is a white guy.

Exactly. I guarantee you if that kid had been white, he'd be alive today.

And the one that shot him would be in prison already.

This recalls the unhappy case of Hattori Yoshihiro, a sixteen-year-old Japanese exchange student who, trying to find the site of a Halloween party to which he'd been invited, got gunned down for wandering into the wrong house. (For those of you who might be wondering, Hattori was costumed as John Travolta's character from Saturday Night Fever--which I just don't see being terribly intimidating in 1992.)

Ugh, Sanford. My aunt lived there for a bit and I could totally see her family pulling this shit. If that neighborhood watch guy doesn't get in major shit for this, I'm sure it will be for race reasons.

Holy shit. That's my town. Ye gods. As disgusting and shameful as this is, I can't say I'm surprised. Sanford is a small, old town, much more "old South" than Orlando proper, but it also has a very large, very poor black and Hispanic community. Racial tension and violence has happened here before - can't say I'm astonished that it still happens.

That poor kid.

The detail about the skittles for his brother being in his pocket just sent me to tears.

This happened last month? Are the police even investigating? 911 calls are supposed to be public information, and they won't even release a transcript to the family? What the HELL?

This really saddens me. From the time I was 12 until I got my own car, I used to walk to nearby convenience stores to get snacks. It's just an innocent thing you do. And he got skittles for his brother, too.

I was never shot, or found "suspicious." I can't help but assume it's because I'm white, too....

Oh, just guess how freakin' surprised I was that the kid was black and the gun-packing thug (oh, exCUSE me, proud patriotic Second-Amendment-loving Real American) was white.

But remember, Racism Is Totally Over Duuuude and You're the Real Racist for Mentioning Racism.

I came here to post this, and am not surprised it's already up.

Signed, forwarded, etc. Trayvon could have been one of my neighbor's kids, though I don't live in a gated community. What if they visit a friend from school who does live in a gated community?

This is also a hate crime and calls for the Feds to get involved. Considering how corrupt Florida's justice system is, that may be the only way for anything to happen.

And Geraldo opens his mouth and inserts both feet all the way to the knees.

Highlights include: Geraldo Rivera said Friday that the hoodie an unarmed black teenager wore when he was killed in Florida is as much responsible for his death as the man who shot him.

My rage knows no bounds now. Seriously, he comes across as someone who'd blame a woman who was wearing a short-skirt for getting raped.

for the linkphobic, tweet to that effect: "Hoodies get you shot. Short skirts get you raped. No wonder people in the future always wear jumpsuits."

also: pics of all the times Geraldo himself has been seen wearing a hoodie:

best one is (non-shopped!) where he's with Bill O'Reilly and they're BOTH wearing hoodies! Two turds with one stone! Totes justifiable!

And now if you'll excuse me, showering with Brillo pads and flossing my brain with barbed wire, BRB
