In which Rick Santorum (hopefully) shoots himself in his last foot
Here we have Mr. Santorum suddenly realizing that teleprompters do serve one useful purpose: to help keep you from blurting out half of the N-word on camera.

My favorite part of all of this is people who swear they're neither racist nor Santorum supporters rushing in to 'splain about any number of other words that could have been, which in every single case bear no audible resemblance to what he actually said, are words he would have had no logical reason to stop saying halfway through, and/or are words that in context would make no fucking sense whatsoever. I just get this visual of them frantically flipping through the dictionary looking for something, ANYTHING to throw out there.

I'm a little sad. Couldn't he have won the primary first, and then put his foot in his mouth up to mid-thigh like this?

Romney scares me. He's a little too good at pretending to be a decent human being. As evidenced by this video, Santorum has trouble managing it.

(And let's face facts, if Obama squeezes out Santorum in the election, that'll be a much better headline than squeezing out Romney.)

You think people would see the defeat of Santorum as the defeat of social conservatism? That was what I got from your parenthetical, so please correct me if I'm wrong.

I think of Romney as the conservative Kerry. They're not going to win, they're stuck with a candidate who's palatable but unexciting, and divisive as Obama may be, much like Rove in '04, if his strategists can motivate the base to get to the polls on state issues, the game is over. And so long as Romney remains the presumptive-and-almost-certain nominee, I have a reason to buy a "my dog is on the roof" t-shirt.

Santorum: "that frothy mixture of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the byproduct of anal sex."

Be sure to link to the appropriate site. Interesting -- for awhile, this was the #1 hit when Googling for "santorum"; then for a bit it was a campaign-related site. Now the #1 hit is "Campaign for "santorum" neologism", which I think means that the internet has now officially gone meta-meta.

Ah! Didn't know that existed. I just googled "Santorum slang", thinking I'd end up at Urbandictionary or something.

I found Kerry very exciting! I was also incredibly young and naive and reacted to that campaign like a schoolgirl with her first real crush.

See, for me, he's right at the edge of the Uncanny Valley. One second, he's normalish, in a Stepford Smiler sort of way. The next second? "Oh, my God, it's a killer robot! Get it away!"

YMMV, of course. :)

I have about the same reaction. He's like an alien who kiiind of gets Earth, and then he goes and says something like, "I don't watch Nascar but I have friends who own the teams" or "My wife drives a couple of Cadillacs" and it's like he's from the planet of Super Rich people.

Exactly. He strikes me as a political version of that bumbling, well-meaning tourist you see in comedy shows that is earnestly trying to fit in but keeps making the most ridiculous cultural mistakes.

I'm not quite sure 'bout that - he appears to have trouble pretending to be human period. I am awaiting the moment where his disguise hologram goes on the fritz on television and he is revealed as the alien robot mole everyone knows him in their hearts to be.
