Join us in standing up for reproductive health and education. Planned Parenthood, the organization that delivers reproductive health care, sex education and information to millions of people worldwide, has come under fire in the U.S. lately, with many politicians on both state and federal level seeking to end funding (and in a few cases succeeding).

During the month of May, you can send a specially designed Planned Parenthood vgift to your friends to help support this cause. (And if you need someone to send it to, [info]frank is always happy to receive gifts!) There are three variations ($1, $5 and $10) for you to choose from, but they'd all look good on your profile when your friends know that you stand by something so important.

Thank you all for your help in our support for Planned Parenthood. This promotion ends June 1, 2012; LiveJournal is not affiliated with Parent Parenthood. For more information about Planned Parenthood, please visit: http://www.plannedparenthood.org/

P.S. According to staff, 100% of proceeds will be donated to PP at the end of the month.

DO NOT READ THE COMMENTS unless you're looking for assholes and YOU CANNOT BUY THESE WITH LJ TOKENS.

One of the best parts is people giving them to the assholes who have been stomping all over the comments. "Thanks to you, they're getting another $5! :D"

I wonder how many Izuko has gotten considering you could probably have filled out several different bingo cards with what he has posted alone. His accusing a black woman of being racist, and sexist against him takes the cake.

My friend got one as a birthday gift (she supports PP, so it's not a troll gift), and... yeah. Izuko is "special". I just... I cannot even.

I wonder if pointing out to those people that in Canada, there are no laws because it's considered a medical procedure, legislated and protected (and prosecuted if there's malpractice), and paid for by taxpayers since it's lumped in with the rest of our health care.

I suspect minds would be blown.

Then you could mention a Conservative minister standing up in Parliament and giving an epic, epic smackdown to the Tory backbencher who introduced an anti-abortion motion. One CBC journalist even said his speech was the most pro-choice out of all the parties'. Françoise Boivin, Hedy Fry, and Niki Ashton all gave amazing smackdowns too. The day's Hansard is awesome.

Every time I see recorded's person gif I want to reply with "Until it's born with a vagina." *Must not troll the wank. Must not troll the wank. Must not troll the wank.*

I really wish I had the money to buy some of those. This is the first I've actually been really happy that I stayed on LJ.

For the record: I don't give a fuck what you want to call it. clump of cells, person, whatever. It doesn't matter. We all have the right to bodily autonomy, even at the cost of someone else's life. You can not be forced to donate any part or the use of your body to someone who needs it, even if they will die because you refused. Even if you die they can not take something from you without permission from you given before death, or from your next of kin. I firmly believe this also applies to a "person" existing inside the body of a woman.

What makes a fetus different from a man who needs a bone marrow transplant? What makes it different from a child who needs a kidney, a woman who needs a lung? What about the people who are disqualified from the organ donations for various reasons? Why should that tiny thing, whether you consider it a person or not, inside the body of a woman who doesn't want it there be afforded more rights than any other living human in the US?

You're forgetting that most of these people are probably taking up a so-called selfless caused because they are, in fact, inherently selfish. They would be 100% behind stealing an organ from someone, as long as no one can do it from them :-/

OH. That one's actually a satirical gif taken from a Daily Show segment about how ridiculous that line of reasoning is.

Hey ellie_kay, you haven't been able to adopt you "perfect BABY no one else has fucked up" because some in the foster care system is doing a good job! I hope they keep it up, because I honestly fear for any child that has to suffer a life with you.

Yes, this! THANK YOU for giving me a clear and rational argument of this point - I'm surrounded by conservative fundamentalists who believe that bodily autonomy is superceded by the fetus' 'right to life', and I've been trying for ages to find a coherent way to articulate how wrong that is and how little sense it makes. Seriously, thank you.

I'm confused about the people claiming it's ~science~ that it's a PERSON because it has different DNA. Um, I'm pretty sure that's not how science works. And it's not like that makes it less of a literal parasite (as opposed to the figurative kind they seem to be using as a defense against that). Idk, I don't care if a tapeworm has unique DNA, if I'm not on some weird extreme diet, I don't want it in me.

Also, I'd lovvvvveeee to know how many of them supported the wars in the Middle East, or the death penalty. Or, hell, as I think I mentioned in those comments, how many of them spend as much time fighting for the rights of starving children and the like.

how many of them spend as much time fighting for the rights of starving children and the like.

Most of them don't. After it's born in whatever scenario they've used in the past (slutty woman who should have kept her legs closed; a welfare queen looking for more money; an unfortunate woman who's been repeatedly raped/forced into sex by male parent/family member; or a God-fearing moral married Christian woman who decided to sacrifice her life so the fetus might live), whatever happens to the once-born child be it adoption, foster care, abusive parent(s), it's all God's will and He'll take care of the child in this life and the next. So, theirs and government's responsibility to the child ends at the moment of birth. (Note: The above are their descriptions for such scenarios, not mine.)

And even if the child manages to survive until adulthood doing nothing criminal but living in an abusive situation and/or dire poverty -- it's all "their own fault anyway because they [the child] has free will, and if they want a better life, then they should be able to pull themselves up by the bootstraps (no government help needed), the same way Rush Limbaugh, Pat Roberson, Newt Gingrich and Glenn Beck did."

Not to mention that not all people have unique DNA... monozygotic twins have an identical genome, even if it isn't always expressed identically. The DNA of a fetus may be unique from the mother's (but only a very small percentage - that you get 50% of your DNA from each parent does not mean that 50% of all your DNA is different from one parent, because most of our DNA is pretty much the same).

OMG, I love all the people in those comments who are planning to leave LJ now because it's suddenly "supporting partisan political causes".

...have they somehow missed the fact that it gets DDoS'd like clockwork every time there's an election season in Russia?

Oh sorry I forgot it doesn't count as partisan politics unless it involves American conservatives with a persecution complex, strike the above.

I don't know if it is, but personally I just get really uncomfortable if I see someone I think was over here first go over there and get involved, so I make a point not to do so myself no matter what JF comm it is.

Women's reproductive health/rights/bodily autonomy is a huge issue for me, which is why I've posted what four times now? Which is more than I usually comment on anything.

Nope! Part of the original reasoning behind starting this community was that sometimes things are so unfunny that keeping it in the community can feel ethically wrong, so we needed a place where that rule wouldn't need to apply.

...As the author of a strikethrough-era vgift epic about using Pepsi as a contraceptive, I personally am just sitting back and lolling about this because it's hilarious, but then part of the mod philosophy on UFB has been that mod lets you make your own ethical calls.

(Also kind of amused that lj-staff is coming out with a pro-PP campaign shortly after dreamwidth Denise made the mainstream media with her pro-PP campaign. But that's clearly just a coincidence! :D )

Holy craaaaap those comments. I wish I had the ability to buy a few people those vgifts, but I cancelled my credit card months ago and don't have a paypal. :/

I also wish I had lj notes so I could tack a bunch of 'this person is an asshole' notes to a ton of people in the comments.
