Cake Boss Trans Fail
Carmen Carrera was a contestant on the third season of RuPaul's Drag Race - a reality competition for drag queens on LOGO - and recently appeared on ABCs What Would You Do? (that's a video link) at which time she announced that she is transgender and has begun the process of her transition.

For awhile now, on her Facebook and Twitter, Carmen has very excitedly been reminding her followers and fans of her upcoming appearance on Cake Boss.

Last night after it had aired, she posted several messages that the producers had gone against her wishes. Apparently, the idea had been to prank one of the guys on the show into flirting with her, and then reveal that Carmen was transgendered. She says she had been fairly specific with the producers over what language to use, but come airtime, it was a pretty blatant "THAT'S A MAN" bait and switch.

(What they actually told Carmen would happen is unknown at this time, but seeing as how they promised her they wouldn't use problematic language and they did...)

Carmen got very, very hurt, and posted several times on her Facebook.

(All of these are still available on her Facebook, but for the linkphobic, I'll copy them under the cut)

First post:

Im really trying to be a positive role model for trans people and it upsets me that after I SPECIFICALLY asked the producers of "Cake Boss" NOT to disrespect me or trans people. Before I agreed to do this show, I was assured and then reassured that it wasn't going to be like the JERRY SPRINGER show or MAURY. Let me make this clear. CALLING A TRANSGENDER WOMAN A MAN IS WRONG. Period. Its degrading, its rude, and its very hurtful. I may not have been born a woman, but im NOT a man. I told them I would mind if they said "born male" or "was a male". After taking this journey its not fair at all to be lied to by the producers. PLEASE PASS THIS ALONG. EDUCATE AND PROMOTE EQUALITY AND RESPECT!!!!!!!

About an hour later, she made her second post: (note, I have redacted some of the words used, but I'm sure you can get the gist)

Im so upset right now, I cant stop crying. My heart truly hurts. I need people to understand that I KNOW I was born male and not ashamed of it. I wouldn't of cared if they said I was born male or USED TO BE male. By calling me a 'MAN' promotes ignorance and makes it ok to call transgender women, men. PEOPLE GET BULLIED, BEAT UP, AND KILLED FOR BEING TRANS BECAUSE OF THIS IGNORANCE! There was a time it was like that for gay people, even for some ethnic groups. Its not ok to call a gay person a ***, its not ok to call a spanish person a ***, its not ok to call a black person a ***. THIS IS THE SAME TYPE OF THING. I made it VERY clear to the producers on how to use the correct wording before agreeing to filming this but instead they chose to poke fun and be disrespectful. Thats not what Im about! Please voice your opinion.

At which time she linked directly to the Cake Boss facebook account and unleashed her fans - and fellow queens (including Morgan McMichaels and Jiggly Caliente) - on the page.

She (or a friend or fan) also created a petition calling for Buddy to publically apologize.

She made one more post, earlier today

LET ME MAKE THIS VERY CLEAR! LISTEN UP PEOPLE! I signed on to do this episode of "Cake Boss" to promote EQUALITY. Transgender women are just as beautiful as biological woman and should be respected for that. The "reveal" was never meant to be a "Jerry Springer, 'THATS A MAN'..." kind of thing. I was promised that it wasn't going to be that way. I was lied to. I dont promote misleading someone or putting down the trans community. I am a beautiful transgendered woman and if a guy hits on me at a bar, ITS OK! That was the message. Hearing things like "You'll never be a real woman" or "I hope you burn in hell for changing your gender" or "You will always be a man" is the EXACT TYPE OF IGNORANCE THAT THIS SHOW HELPED TO PROMOTE. This is why Im so upset. If men find me attractive and treat me as lady, why do some of you people think its wrong??? Why are some of you trying to take that away from me like I dont deserve to be treated with respect and admiration? Ignorance, thats why. STOP THE HATE AND PASS THIS ON.

It appeared she had gone quiet on the subject after that, but...

Earlier this evening, Carmen returned to her Facebook, mad as hell.

OK, so now Im an "IT"???? This is how the "Cousin Anthony" from the "Cake Boss" referred to me to a fan.... IGNORANCE. Please sign! (she linked the petition again)

The photo is a screencap of a Twitter conversation with "Cousin Anthony."

Not long after her post with the photo of the Twitter conversation, Buddy showed up on the Cake Boss Facebook page with a post of his own (Fauxpology apparently copied over from his personal page. You're warned now, the comments are awful):

I've been trying to connect with Carmen and apologize to her directly, but also think I owe an apology to the entire LGBT community. It was absolutely not my intention to upset or offend her, or anyone within the community, and I was wrong to use the words I did. I am a supporter of gay rights and equality, and while I regret this situation and my choice of words, I am thankful to have received this feedback and the opportunity to learn from this mistake. I hope that Carmen accepts my sincere regrets.
