Congressman Acts Like Giant Gaping Sphincter, World Is Shocked
Are you in a bad mood? Are you near homicidal rage? Don't click on the cut.

I'm going to copy from the LJ post I read this on, because it describes it so well:

"This is what Congressman Todd Akin (R-MO) of the 2nd District in Missouri (the citizens of whom should be seriously embarrassed to have elected this fucknut) said in an interview with a St. Louis TV station:

“It seems to me, from what I understand from doctors, that’s really rare,” Mr. Akin said of pregnancies from rape. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work or something: I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be of the rapist, and not attacking the child.”

Wow, just -- wow. Leaving aside the oh-so-entertaining doublespeak of "legitimate rape," I just love that he thinks that the uterus has an "airplane mode" it can go into after a rape. Because it's what he understands from doctors! *headdesk*".

I agree with [info]kradical, I think the only thing that can be said is 'wow'. Also, that Todd Akin is a giant, gaping sphincter.

(And yes, jedi-Edgeworth *is* going to force-lighting an asshole)

At least Obama had a good reply for the douchebag:

"The views expressed were offensive. Rape is rape. … What I think these comments do underscore is why we shouldn’t have a bunch of politicians—a majority of whom are men—making health care decisions on behalf of women."

And every time I start to rage at Obama for not doing enough, I realize how rare it is to have a President who can actually make statements like this. Sounds like faint praise, I know, but there are so few politicians (and even fewer male politicians) who are willing to come out and say these things.

It's kind of funny to watch the Republican Party as a whole tripping all over themselves to distance themselves from him.

In general, though, I wish I could tell all politicians, "If you start a sentence with 'I believe there was a study' or 'I understand from doctors/scientists/whatever', just stop there and save yourself the embarrassment, because whatever comes out of your mouth next will be monumentally stupid."

I have to wonder what the hell kind of doctors he's asking if multiple ones apparently believe women have magic anti-rape reproductive systems that can totally tell the difference between rape and consensual sex.

Assuming, of course, he did in fact consult actual doctors.

"If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

IIRC, this belief is based on the fact that people with uteri do have a better chance of becoming pregnant if they orgasm after being inseminated. The conclusions (willfully ignorant) people then jump to are that "have better chance of" means "will always and won't without" and "orgasm" means "they totally wanted it" - neither of which is true, obviously. I'm pretty sure this exact string of 'logic' was used to dismiss rape charges around the time Chaucer was alive, though I could well be misremembering/misinformed.

Anyway, if I do indeed recall correctly, then the fact that an actual congressperson is relying on 'logic' followed in the middle ages speaks volumes. And if I'm wrong, it's still a vile position to take and horribly fallacious logic at best.

Even better (if better is defined as "more awe inspiring, that someone actually can say this with a straight face") is that Akin then backpedaled and said that he "misspoke" and that he has "a deep empathy" for all women who have been raped or abused.

Yeeeeaaaah. Real deep empathy there, bub.

Oh holy shit, my friend posted a link about this on Facebook (along with his subsequent backpedaling) and THE VERY FIRST COMMENT was some douche going "yeah but women lie about rape".

And then I spontaneously combusted.

Me and a few other people tried to ask him why the fuck he would say something like that and I had to start playing "Derailing 101" bingo by the end of it because he seriously pulled out every one.

Anyway, neither here nor there. I feel like I'm watching my country and its government careening towards a cliff and there's nothing I can do to stop it (red-state blue voter right here). And worse - no one else cares/notices.

I'm not even pissed at what he said (which is fucking offensive and awful, don't get me wrong) so much as I am that there are so many people running around horrified and acting as if this is new rhetoric. Seriously? My first thought after hearing the story was "Oh, God, did my uncle change his name and decide to run for the Senate?!"

I am glad to see he's staying in the race, as the way the RNC has handled this has made a clusterfuck of polling data and Missouri -- which should have been a fairly easy take for Romney -- is now going to be harder to capture. Yay, electoral math!
