Olympic Asshaberdashery
The Spanish basketball team displays epic stupidity.

For those who are just skimming: the link goes to an article about a team photo in which all the players are using their fingers to give themselves slanty "Chinese" eyes. Classy, n/n? To make it even better, the team is sponsored by Li Ning Footwear. Li Ning, you might recall, is the gentleman who lit the Olympic flame this time around. The Spanish are mad at the British paper that reported on the photo, accusing them of smearing Spain's good name in true fanbrat fashion.

As the article puts it: "It's baffling that nobody involved in the picture -- from the photographers to the players -- even seemed to consider that this ad would be looked at negatively. Did it not occur to somebody that it might not be a good idea to mock an entire continent before the world's largest athletic competition that, by the way, happens to take place on that continent. Were they not aware of an invention called "the Internet" that allows pictures taken in Spain to be transmitted all over the world for the eyes of everyone?"

Fail, Spanish basketball team, fail.

And I thought that the whole lip-synch scandal surrounding the opening ceremony was going to take the Failympic gold. Looks like China is going to have to settle for silver or bronze this year.

What the hell, indeed.

I mean, seriously, I wanna know who said, "Let's do it for the lulz, it'll be awesome!" and why he wasn't immediately voted off the island, so to speak.

Not to mention the ever-popular "If you see racism in the picture, it's because you're racist yourself." Which is possibly the asshattiest asshattery that ever wore an asshat.

I think I'm just going to stare at my icon now.

Holy semantics!

I'm starting to wonder if there isn't a huge problem in these cross-cultural discussions where to people in the US, ethnicity and race are seen as basically the same thing -- what you look like is your ancestry is your identity -- while to some others race is the physical appearance and ethnicity is the identity. It looks like those people may be arguing that it's "not racist" because they see it as part of an attitude about an ethnic group, that is, culturally Chinese people, instead of about a race, that is, people of Asian ancestry -- ergo not "racism" but cultural bias, which is somehow better. Anyone else read it that way, or am I just up too late?

ryan charisma: So along with banning words - we should be banning hand and facial gestures?

Public approbation =/= "banning." And for the umpteenth-billionth time, FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION DOES NOT GUARANTEE FREEDOM FROM OTHER PEOPLE CRITICIZING YOUR EXPRESSION. Gah!

Sorry for shouting, it just makes me batty. I guess I should be grateful he didn't bring up the First Amendment.

You just don't see what goes on here in term of racism. It's a mess. The best explanation is that 30 years ago there were no immigrants here whatsoever (I don't think they could get in, but there probably wasn't much to do here if we were emigrating as well).

There's also a lot of naivety as well... I can't convince my older relatives that "fagot" is not an appropriate substitute for "gay", so if I tried explaining to them how "Chinese=! Japanese, Korean, etc", or how they don't need to say "black" in each sentence when they're talking about their black neighbors, they'd ignore me. We truly look at that picture and think it's in good fun. And we don't personally know anybody who would get offended by it, so these kind of things happen all the time without getting any negative feedback, which makes it easy to happen again.

I'm not defending them, nor do I want to start some wank. I've read enough about racism (specially from an American point of view) to know how loaded that picture is. I'm not defending their ignorance either, just pointing out that it exists. And confessing that yeah, we do have a problem with racism, specially if foreigners come to look at it.

It's easy to not be aware of the state of racism (and awareness of racism) elsewhere -- it's not something that the media over here in the U.S. tend to cover. (Hell, even racism in the U.S. doesn't get much attention.)

Sadly, all those examples are true, and there isn't anything to say that would make them sound less awful. I did say we had issues, right?

The one about Aragonés and Henry also generated a bit of a debate, because from a Spanish mindset is quite believable that he didn't mean in a racist way (we're that foulmouthed, and the fact that he wasn't addressing Henry helps his case a lot); people were a bit torn on whether the issue was being treated fairly. Obviously (and thankfully!) nobody defended the other two incidents... we're not that far gone, but we do have our share of idiots, I guess.

Because, yeah... NO.
