OH People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals NO!
PETA wants to advertise vegan message on border fence:

While many view the contentious border fence as a government fiasco, an animal rights group sees a rare opportunity.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals plans today to announce an unusual marketing pitch to the U.S. government: Rent us space on the fence for billboards warning illegal border crossers there is more to fear than the Border Patrol.

The billboards, in English and Spanish, would offer the caution: "If the Border Patrol Doesn't Get You, the Chicken and Burgers Will — Go Vegan."

"We think that Mexicans and other immigrants should be warned if they cross into the U.S. they are putting their health at risk by leaving behind a healthier, staple diet of corn tortillas, beans, rice, fruits and vegetables," said Lindsay Rajt, assistant manager of PETA's vegan campaigns.

The Department of Homeland Security is working to meet a deadline to complete 670 miles of fencing and other barriers on the Southwest border by Dec. 31. The fencing operation has run into stiff opposition by landowners fighting government efforts to obtain their land through condemnation.

PETA says its billboards would picture "fit and trim" Mexicans in their own country, where their diet is more in line with the group's mission. Another image on the sign would portray obese American children and adults "gorging on meaty, fat- and cholesterol-packed American food."

*headdesk* *headdesk* *headdesk*

I got it at Feministing, who got it from Bitch who got it from Vegans of Color.

Okay, is PETA actively trying to make everyone hate them now?

YOU GUYS, IT WORKED, IT WORKED AGES AGO, PLEASE STFU NOW.

It IS rather bizarre.

PETA does have a kernel of truth there in that the American diet (and I'm not saying the Canadian one is much better) of plentiful food - including fast food - is not very healthy and even a less fast-food-sprinkled diet seems to still tend to bring immigrants' health levels down somewhat (there have been medical studies on this).

But do they really think Mexicans are going to *care* about that when they're escaping a country which has serious problems and they see that the grass appears greener on the other side of the hill?

So yeah, the only real answer here is O_O <-- me staring in wonderment at the sudden rise in batshittery this month.

I'm trying to decide if PETA is just unaware of the rape gangs that prey after women who are crossing the border or if they think eating meat is worse than women being gang raped.

My favorite billboard evar was from a decade ago, when I worked in South Dakota. I lived in a small town on the edge of the state, and periodically had to drive to the capitol to meet with my bosses.

The drive took about five hours, and roughly halfway through, there was a billboard, stark white with black all-caps type, which read:

SOUTH DAKOTA
REJECTS
ANIMAL ACTIVISTS!

It never failed to crack me up, nor anyone riding with me, and my only regret is that I never remembered to bring a camera to record it for posterity.

(But you'd think they'd put the billboard at the edge of the state, so that the animal activists could go around!)

But can animal activists actually read human languages? The billboard might have been more effective if it were written in Bear or Coyote.

... Someone knows jack shit about Mexican cuisine. Barbacoa, cochinita pibil, Chimichangas, chicken with mole poblano, etc.

Now I'm craving for Mexican food, dammit. :D~~

Oh PETA. How lucky we are to have you. After all, it's not every organization who would willingly take on all the batshit Americans and give them a space far from other in which to play. That kind of daycare for crazies is usually fairly expensive, yanno? But PETA offers it free of charge. Lucky, lucky us.

So PETA wants to buy space on a fence designed to keep Mexicans out in order to get a message to Mexicans coming into the US.

I'll just be here boggling at the many levels of fail happening here.

I know that if I was going to try to make a run for the States so I could earn enough money to feed my family, that would sure discourage me from doing so. Halp, there is too much foods!

Oh, PETA, lol.

This reminds me of when some vegetarian community went nuts on one of its members who realized her vegetarian diet wouldn't fly when she went on a trip to rural Mexico. Everyone told her to just refuse the food that the family giving her a place to stay offered her unless it was vegetarian. These people are deluding themselves if they actually think all Mexicans are vegetarians. Vegetarian is not the first thing I think of when I think of Mexican food.

Memo to PETA: There is such a thing as bad publicity.

Also, LOL at the idea that pictures of fat Americans are going to scare people into not crossing the border. As a larger sized woman who lived in San Diego, California for almost my entire life, I got hit on all the time by men from Mexico. America’s obsessive body hate issues aren’t everyone’s, but thanks for trying to change that, PETA.

In countries where getting enough food to not be hungry is a very real daily thing, fat people = wealthy, prosperous and beautiful. (Read Isaac Bashevis Singer stories about "fat and handsome" women in poor European villages.)

In countries where crappy fat-soaked food is cheaper than fruits, veggies and whole grains (mainly because of subsidies), THIN people = wealthy enough to afford personal trainers & the "good" food.

So, yeah -- that billboard is pretty much an ad saying "Whoa! Gorgeous fat chicks in America, on top of a rate of pay that's 10 times what you'd get at home!"
