In today's Fandom!Secrets post:

Secret 126: "I'll stop reading a novel if I find out it's written by a woman."

Secret 138: "Just because I dislike the large majority of female characters doesn't make me a sexist.".

That first secret is all kinds of fail. Author =/= narrator. Also, if she doesn't like reading fiction written by women, what the heck is she doing in fandom?

I'm wondering if she just gets to a point where she realises "omg it's a girl!" or if someone has to point it out and then she's like "Oooh, I hate it now (but before it was okay)."

Agreed that #126 makes me want that person to get the hell out of my species, but... I dunno about #138. I mean, I don't particularly dislike female characters -- I certainly won't stop reading a book if I find out a female is a major character -- but yeah, I admit, it's just a personal preference of mine to prefer books with male protagonists. I don't know why.

Sad as it is, I seem to recall reading somewhere that J.K. Rowling was credited as "J.K." instead of by her first name so that it would be less obvious at first glance that the author was a woman.

I think the assumption was that boys would be more likely to pick it up if it wasn't obvious, but either way, it's pretty douchey to think that the narrator is the same as the author and can't be separated.

That's correct. What's kind of funny, and I don't know if anyone else was the same, but I actually didn't want to read it at first because I thought they were written by a man.

I really, really love people who claim that just because they hate all female characters who have ever or will ever exist, that doesn't mean they have issues with women. They LOVE women, really. They just don't want anything so uncouth in their popular entertainment.

I dunno about #138. On the one hand, it sounds like the author is probably a misogynistic jerk. On the other hand, not liking female characters doesn't make you sexist per se. Like, I don't like the way a lot of female characters are written. That doesn't mean I have issues with women, it means I have issues with the way authors/writers/actors portray their female characters. (But I'm also a lot tougher in critiquing female characters than male characters, which is a sexist attitude; I expect so much more from female characters.)

Augh, everytime geministar01 says anything at all I kind of want to punch her in the face. When I first encountered her (several f!s posts ago, when she was claiming that there was no sexism in comics), I thought she was just willfully Not Getting It, but based on this post, her issues seem far more serious than that. (And punching her in the face probably wouldn't help her with them, but it'll make me feel better.)

These make me want to punch people in the face. I've been putting up with listening to how people think one of my best friends is 'whipped' or is 'a woman in a man's body' just because he has a fuckin' heart and he can relate to both men and women. Now I see this. Guess what folks? Women can be assholes, men can be assholes- douche baggery is gender neutral. Also? From what I've seen men (good men) can get hurt and want to be loved just like women. This idea that we're sooooooo different is bullshit.
