I can't believe it ... and yet somehow I can ...
Apparently, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin looked at BJR's posts and said "Great idea!"

The evacuation of New Orleans becomes mandatory at 8 a.m. Sunday along the vulnerable west bank of the Mississippi River, and at noon on the east bank. Nagin called Gustav the storm of the century and told residents to "get your butts out of New Orleans now."

"This is the real deal, not a test," Nagin said as he issued the order, warning residents that staying would be "one of the biggest mistakes of your life." He emphasized that the city will not offer emergency services to anyone who chooses to stay behind.

And ...

Unlike Katrina, when thousands took refuge inside the Superdome, there will be no "last resort" shelter, and those who stay behind accept "all responsibility for themselves and their loved ones," said the city's emergency preparedness director, Jerry Sneed.

[flails!]

To be fair, the governor activated plans to bring in about 700 buses to evacuate those who don't have transportation of their own... but it appears "the contractor is not necessarily doing what they promised to do" so they're now having to rely on school buses.

Guys, guys- I see the what they're trying to do here and it's all for the best. They're going to keep up with the stupidity as hurricanes hit New Orleans until everyone who doesn't matter is killed off. At that point they won't have to change the emergency plans because everyone will be able to get out.

...

God, that hurt to type.

I saw that and all I could think was, "Please, tell me this will be the official line until the last few hours when they will open some shelters." That way, they can get most people out on the transport they're offering and have enough resources for those who don't go, like undocumented workers afraid of Immigration.

Because otherwise...

And what's ridiculous is that my politically-active friends only heard about this storm because they were reports that McCain might move the RNC convention. These are somewhat informed people, why isn't there more coverage on this issue and how the government isn't doing enough to help them?

They *are* sending around busses and such to transport people out ahead of time, but they won't take pets (a big reason people stayed behind last time), and the people who need to get out the most are the housebound poor ill and elderly, who can't get to the pickups.

So, uh, fuck you dude.

From the BBC here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7590332.stm

"The mayor said he was aiming for a 100% evacuation, which extends to members of the emergency services - fewer than 50 city workers will remain in the city."

*incredulous* 50 city workers? No police, no fire, nothing to stop looters or vandals? This just adds a whole 'nother layer of fail onto this mess.

Y'all, I hate to go all crazy liberal conspiracy theorist on you, but Nagin's (and the rest of the gov't's) seeming "incompetence" is calculated. I mentioned it upthread but there is an excellent book by Naomi Klein called Disaster Capitalism that talks about this stuff. It will make your blood boil. Nagin is doing exactly what the drooling developers and corps want him to do, which is to let Gustav finish the job that Katrina and Rita started. Gotta get the poor folks, the black and brown folks out so NO can turn into a gentrified red paradise of luxury condos and casinos. They want to make it Disneyland on the Bayou.

The one wrench in it is the RNC may just end up being the saving grace for the people of NOLA. These SOBs don't want to look bad during the convention or an election year, so they may just step up to the plate this time.

I just talked it over with my mom, but she's defending it as the government showing that they're serious about this, and that the workers shouldn't be put in danger because some chose to stay behind.

Okay, not that there is really anything funny in this mess but Bush, as per usual, has to go and point out the obvious-

Bush said he planned to head to Texas to meet with emergency workers and evacuees.

"This storm is dangerous," he warned, urging residents to heed calls to evacuate.

I'm so glad we've settled that. For a moment there I thought we were dealing with a hurricane of love, sunshine, and rainbows.
