Barbequed Ferrett has a very short shelf-life.
So, after all the fur flying with the Open Source Boob Project, you'd figure that guys would learn to keep their hands to themselves. Even if their motivation isn't an enlightened attitude toward harassment, but just CYA, hoping not to be the next Ferrett that gets barbequed online, you'd think that they'd still behave themselves, right?

Apparently not.

I got as far as "We all make our own decisions about the situations we enter. If you decide to attend a convention in a huge space with no police presense, along with tens of thousands of people, some of whom are in costume, you should anticipate invasions of your space or liberties with no recourse" and gave up on the whole thing. Ugh, ugh, ugh.

Hey, geeky boys? When you wonder why there are so few women at conventions, remember this. It's because we're not willing to accept this kind of shit.

Somehow I don't think they'd accept the same logic if it was them.

Someone really needs to respond to that with "And if you make the decision to grab my boobs, you should anticipate being punched in the face." and see how the feel about that.

Personally, I'd like to see how all these guys would react if somebody started an Open Source Package Project.

We already know: "It's too invasive and sexual!"

Yay for double standards?

I'm not so sure. I mean, having random women feel them up is probably the most action any of these guys are ever going to get.

Yes, but they run the risk of having men, or unattractive women, touch them, and that's just not acceptable. Duh.

And of course all the Poor Po' Fanboyz on the list are bawling. 'Cause you just KNOW that if any policy to make women congoers feel safe is instituted, all those legions of vicious, non-hot bitches who go to cons only to accuse Poor Innocent Nice-Guy Geeks Like THEM of harrassment, and get them thrown out of the con will rule the roost. And it won't be All About Them any more, and it won't be fun any more, and they might actually have to read a comic written by GURLZ and they'll get cooties.

And of course all women go to cons just to accuse Nice Guys and get them ejected -- just like the way 50% of all rape accusations are false, to take the word of one of those charmingly academic pricks in the comments.

Oh yeah, I know my main goal in life is to get guys in trouble for doing obnoxious shit when they're really innocent and never did a damn thing.

That's a far better way to have fun at a con instead of, you know, the majority of the con itself.

Funny how they actually have to do something for us to accuse them of it, eh?

I would never, ever put forth the "she deserves it for dressing that way" defense, but when I see photos of scantily-clad folk (particularly women) at cons, I always wonder what they think about dressing so provocatively amidst a crowd of people who have a not-entirely-undeserved reputation for social awkwardness and juvenility.

Translation: "I would never say a woman dressed in a certain way deserved to be harassed or assaulted, except right now, when I'm saying exactly that."

Ah, chudmonkey, you are one of the many reasons I stopped going to MeFi years ago.

I was coming here just to say the same thing.

Also, I think it's funny (only not) that some people keep stressing how these are socially awkward people, as if being a comic book reader means you were raised on a remote island by lemurs and no one ever told you it's not OK to grab someone's ass.

If only Spiderman had addressed the problem of socially acceptable behavior, none of those oppressive con rules would be necessary.

Hells, comic geeks even have LESS of an excuse of being insane fuckwads because half the comics out there are about treating the gigantically-boobed teammate with respect and dignity unlike the artist and writer.

Jesus H. Christ. I saw Girl-Wonder at the con earlier, I gotta tell you, I think the idea is necessary. Some people, men and women, are sleazeballs. Period. Just because they're at a con, personality ain't gonna change that damn much. As a woman, I purposely moved locations from the Westin to a host hotel because I was on my own. I know the APD, those stellar bunch, and I wanted to make sure I felt safe. I've seen some damn near nude outfits here this week. I think they're awesome (go Fifth Element ones) but it damned well doesn't get the other gender to harass. Fucking A.

This is why I hate humanity. Seriously. She was asking for it?! Really, were you just asking for a case of a metal ruler slapping your dick (while out for the world to see, since it's only fair) as painfully as possible? Because you were totally asking for it by existing. It's not like Dragon*Con is full of geeks, some are even celebrities, that would probably punch you in the face for acting like a full-on forgotten dingleberry. If someone harasses me, they'll end up with a missing digit, but that's because I'm a mean bitch that has no problem hurting people that try and grab my ass. And I look it. It helps, that's for sure.

D*C has on the badge that they may revoke your badge at any time. In fact "This badge is a limited, revocable license to attend Dragon*Con 2008, which maybe revoked or revised at any time at the sole discretion of Dragon*Con*" is the first line on the back of the badge. A couple sentences down it says "A badge may be revoked and a badge holder ejected from the convention for disorderly conduct, a violation of law or rules, or in the sole discretion of a Dragon*Con official." Basically, you act the fool? Your ass is bounceable. Act responsibly, not a problem. "This badge is non-refundable and will not be replaced." So they can't just get their money back, either.

I knew I loved my city for some strange reason.

Oh, fuck you guys complaining about zero-tolerance policies and proof. The right of women, and people in general, to feel safe going about their business at a con because they have recourse against harassment trumps the right of the tiny percentage of people who will get falsely accused to attend the con. Why the fuck is this your first though? The wanky bitch in me wants to assume it's because you've been accused of harassment yourself, or are afraid you would be, because, guess what? You've, in fact, harassed women, and you don't want to admit it, because you are an entitled, misogynist dickwad.

These fucks remind me of my sleazy, certifiable ex-boss, who complained that "if I have a broom leaning in the corner of the office," someone can say that's sexual harassment because it's phallic." Meanwhile, the Bondage Fairies shirts he wore to work, the cameras he wanted to install in the bathrooms to make sure employees weren't misusing their breaks, and the requests to female employees to pose for nude pictures for his porn site? Not sexual harassment.

He's probably still puzzled about why he got kicked out of Northeastern's hire-an-intern program.

A lot of them seem to be clinging to the idea that some poor, socially awkward guy will get kicked out because he was just 'innocently' trying to hit on some uber-bitch.

Which basically comes down to "MEN get to decide what's an appropriate social interaction and what isn't."

Yes, this.

If you don't want to get kicked out, and you think that hitting on women will be misinterpreted, DON'T HIT ON WOMEN. Not hard. Not rocket science.
